I just caught a snippet of Galaxy Quest, the sendup of Star Trek.
The ultraliteral aliens, Thermians, are just like Scottie Witlessdork.
Bear with me. The Thermians had great difficulty understanding
the concept of fiction. They were almost intractably concrete, just
like duh-Scottie. The Thermians could not grasp the entire concept
of fiction, or even entertainment, and Witlessmoron cannot distinguish
any figurative expression or thought from a literal or tangible object.

To me, this suggests that individuals whose symptoms of estrangement
from reality are self-selecting in a Darwinian race to the bottom.
