Stellantis announced Wednesday it would lay off some 200 workers at its Sterling Heights Assembly plant stating pink slips are set to go out
beginning Sept. 28 and are indefinite.

The automaker issued a statement citing “continued external market
conditions” as the reason for the layoffs. The statement went on to say
that the company is working to offer customers vehicles they can afford
while protecting itself from those market conditions:

“We are continuing to take the necessary actions to improve operations
across our facilities; this includes on-going assessments of our
manufacturing processes to improve efficiency. While that effort
continues, the company will be implementing indefinite layoffs of
    represented employees across its footprint.”

At the same time, Stellantis issued a statement on the permanent layoff of seasonal supplemental employees that were hired to support production by covering for workers who were on vacation during the summer months. Those workers will be separated from the company effective Oct. 1 in accordance
with the 2023 UAW collective bargaining agreement.

The layoffs include 177 supplemental employees and 14 full-time employees according to a letter sent by the UAW Local 1700 to its members.

Last month, Stellantis announced the indefinite layoffs of potentially
2,450 workers at its Warren Truck Assembly plant in Warren.

The layoffs were announced one week after UAW President Shawn Fain said
during a livestream speech Sept. .17 that the UAW is prepared to take
strike action against Stellantis if the company violates contract
    agreements.

UAW Local 1700 termed the move a ‘slap in the face’ in a statement
    released Wednesday.

“This shows that the company having a heart or any respect is out the
window,” said UAW Local 1700 leadership in a statement. “It’s just a
business decision for them. One robocall to fire 177 people for no
    wrongdoing of their own.”

Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor did not immediately respond.
