I have a 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix which just start stalling when I
press in the clutch at a stop light (after it is fully warmed up).

This seemed to start after I replaced the alternator last weekend,
but I've rechecked all battery connections and can't find any
    disconnected vacuum hose connections.

I vaquely remember this happening several years ago on another
GM car, and replacing the Oxygen sensor cured the problem. But
I also had to replace the Throttle Position Sensor several times
on that car ('84 Pontiac Fiero).

Any ideas on how I can determine the root cause of this problem
before I blindly take it to Precision Tune and have them assess
it... I'd much rather try to diagnose and fix it myself.

It seems like the computer is letting the idle speed fall too
low when I press in the clutch, and the car will stall. I have
no problems when running under a load, or with the A/C running
    (higher idle speed).

If you disconnected the battery when you replaced the alternater you
need to reset the idle learn. You do this by disconnecting the battery >> for 30 seconds and reconnect. Start the engine run for 10 min. in
netural for manual trans. and 10 min. in drive for auto trans. Turn off >> engine, wait 10 sec. restart run 5 min in netural or drive for auto.
Turn off engine. Idle should now be set. If still dies you will need to >> take off the air cleaner duct to throttle body and look at throttle
plates if they are dirty on the back side of the throttle plates clean >> them with carb spray on a clean rag then redo idle learn.
This should take care of your problem.

Many thanks to you and the poster yesterday. This procedure to have the >EMC relearn the idle speed did the trick (and saved me a few dollars)!!!

Does this idle learn procedure apply to 1983 Carburator engines?
No this idle learn procedure is for the fuel injected 2.8 V6 only. The carburated 2.8 has no idle learn.

what if the engine will not idel?
