I want word & excel on my new computer but don't really want to pay $70 a year for Microsoft 365. Anybody have recommendation for a good open source to use?
    Thanks GB

You can also maybe install Linux Mint Cinnamon, but depends what other software you're running. It will install Libreoffice during the installation.

I use the Google suite of apps. When you open google.com, look for the square of nine dots on the left. You'll see the suite of apps available.

Office 2021 (download version) is available at a reasonable price
($9.61) or so they say, not tried it myself but %10 is not much to lose.

Apache OpenOffice is excellent. Give it a try. A friend suggested it who had installed it on all of his company's business computers.

LibreOffice is OK, almost but not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office documents.

If you must have full compatibility, you can look around for an unused
(sealed) copy of Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013. Can buy on ebay for
about $50. That is from before their approach went from "own" to
"rent". And in my opinion those versions (2010 & 2013 which are almost identical) were the best versions, it's been downhill since.

They've also sold a certain number of later versions (2016, 2019) with perpetual licenses, you may find that too.

Just be sure to only buy a sealed specimen from a trusted seller, or you
may have trouble getting it "registered" after the installation.

Or you can use the Google apps, and suffer with them being slow, and
have Google spy on your documents :-)

Google Dashboard Workspace Status Dashboard is an interesting feed. Since I don't use many of the services, I'm seldom affected that I notice.
And Microsoft doesn't spy? Awful lot of telemetry data by default.
2013 SP1 reaches End of Life (security) in 4 months. Support ended over 4 years ago. 2010 ended a while back. I liked it.
Openoffice is okay and still supports 32 bit systems. Libreoffice is rather better IMVHO. 100% compatibility would affect maybe 5 in 1000 users. Not really a problem for most users who never touch the advanced features. Most members of my local
computer user group over the past 25 have never touched Access, which is okay for quick and dirty projects, but can struggle with moderate data. FWIW, I provided three chapters with all C/GL and F/GL ratings within a 100-120 miles radius in the past
couple of days. Access and Excel made this relatively easy.

That said, if you have multiple devices, Microsoft 365 Family is not terribly expensive for the number of devices and cloud storage and fine for our family.

    YMMV
