• Motorglider Maintenance Forums at the Upcoming SSA Convention

From J6 aka Airport Bum@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 12 09:56:10 2023
Just a note to anyone interested, on Thursday February 23 at the SSA Convention in Reno, the Aux-powered Sailplane Association will be running Maintenance Forum presentations for common auxiliary powered sailplane types. These will consist of
presentations by folk with deep experience in the various types, and will include Q&A sessions. There will even be a few boxes of broken parts to pour over, a great way to learn.

Please check the schedule when you get there, but right now they'll kick off at 9 AM with Terry Edmonds talking about DG-800/Solo powered. 10 AM Schleicher USA Agent Rex Mayes will talk about Schleichers, followed at 11 AM by Tom Seim, also on
Schleichers but from a user's point of view. After lunch, at 1:30 AM Bob Faris will talk about his recent 3000 hr major inspection on his DG-800, and then at 2:30 Garrett Willat will talk about Schempp Hirth.

    Cheers,
    Jim J6

Mr. Bum, from what I see at our club and other Motorglider owners maybe they should extend the time allowed to cover all the maintenance and failures, just a suggestion. Your friend, Old Bob, The Purist

Got a crank call from someone calling himself "the Purist". He said "we'd like to talk to you regarding your extended warranty". Damn, now he has my phone number?

J7, how long does that convention last, must go on for at least a week just to cover the Solo engine issues. OBTP

Sorry, Ricky-Bobbie, no Solo engine in my glider. Instead, a vibration-free reliable Wankel wit full FADEC controls (of course fuel-injected, electronic injection). The 100 year old engine in your Pawnee can't compete. They don't even offer an extended
    warranty for that dinosaur.

Herbie, that Wankel has been subject to many seal and o ring problems through the decades. Don't be putting down the my beautiful Pawnee, there have been many times in the past that a Pawnee has made it available for you to soar. Oh, that so called 100
year old engine in my Pawnee is still roaring, I bet that Wankel will not be doing the same at 100 years. Old Bob, The Purist

The Aux-powered Sailplane Association Maintenance Forums at the 2023 Soaring Society of America Convention are now history. A lot of useful information was presented, lots of great discussion and interchange. Many thanks to all the presenters, the
audience, the volunteers, and the Zoom participants. Special thanks to Tom Seim who organized the whole thing, huge amount of work, well done Tom.

Apologies to the Zoom participants for any audio or video quality problems you may have experienced. We are not Zoom experts! As explanation (not excuses), our access to the meeting room in the morning was delayed, so the time we had to figure out the
setups was limited. And once the presentations started, we had limited time available to fine tune things. We did our best. All presentations were videoed, and YouTube videos will be produced and posted at some point. We aren't YouTube experts either,
and the soaring season is about to start, so this might take some time..... Please be patient.

We hope that this effort was and will be a useful service to the aux-powered sailplane community, and to the great sport of soaring in general.

    Cheers,
    Jim J6
