I am an old-school Thunderbird user still. It allows me access to
Eternal Sept to read this newsgroup. Not even sure if news groups are
even used anymore we seem to be a bunch of crazy old cyclist.

Thunderbird is good but slow and I would possible like to go to Outlook
but it will cost $70 a year. What are you all using for your email
program and getting the newsgroup. Pretty sure Andrew is doing what I do
but maybe not for all email.

Thunderbird is not slow for me.

There was a decade or so when I considered myself as
informed as anyone on building, configuring, modifying and
repairing computes and in that time I wrote the software my
employees used for inventory tracking, customer sales
records, payroll and general ledger. That was very long ago
and I can't do much with modern systems now; we use a tech
    service.

After a service call here last week I asked the tech about
girlfriend's laptop which I bought new just a few years ago.
He said laptops are prone to hard drive degradation which
will slow everything. I'm going to drop it off for analysis.

You might get an expert opinion on your own system
(including router and modem) before committing to Out House.

My wife and I use outlook on our windows laptops, IPads, and Iphones.
I've had Microsoft 365 and Microsoft office before that because I'
used Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook from way back when they were on
my corporate work computers. In the latest version I've disabled
Onedrive which tries to send and store everything I do on the
Microsoft "cloud," and Copilot which is AI and overlooks what I do.

Hard drives physically seem to last decades even smaller laptop style
drives. Clearly they are a physical spinning disk, so have bearing and so
    on.

Older file systems where prone to fragmentation ie data being stored in multiple places which would slow I/O though more modern systems doesn’t
    seem to be a thing.

You might get an expert opinion on your own system
(including router and modem) before committing to Out House.

Unless one is downloading binary’s Usenet is so data efficient I get the
feed at times when it will not load email let alone browse the web.

I’d expect that any network problems would manifest much more with data intensive software such as streaming video or web browsing.

Not used a modern windows system for a while but I’d assume it has a task manager that can display I/O of data and network plus memory and CPU
    useage.

Some computers use solid state drives. They are much faster, but there
are concerns over the number of read/write cycles.

If thunderbird is slow on your PC it isn't an issue with Thunderbird.
I'm running it on two laptops with no speed issues. The issues you're
running into are more likely with ES. It's a free service (donation
based) being managed by a small team for little money. The fastest/best
PC and internet connectivity aren't going to help with that.

Also, Outlook isn't a newsreader, so you won't be able to access RBT
with it, and besides a basic outlook email account is free. If you want additional cloud storage, there's a fee.

I use Eternal September with Forte Agent as a newsreader. I have no
issues with speed, but occasionally my Eternal September connection
simply shuts down. Usenet is not a high enough priority for me for
that to be a problem. I've got many, many other things to do.

I use the News.individual.net (check link as it’s from memory) aka the
German server which is £10 a year and is fast and reliable which seems
worth not having to deal with the glitches etc for the free stuff.

For newsgroup access, I use Thunderbird. It works fine for me. I've seen
no reason to use it for email, even though I could if I chose to.

    For Newsgroups I use Thunderbird.
For mail, I use whatever comes handy: outlook for my work email,
thunderbird or a webmail reader for my private mail on the work PC or
the mail programs on the mobile phone.

Agreed. I've been using individual.net for the last year: <https://news.individual.net>
    <https://news.individual.net/overview.php>
It's been quite reliable with only a few short outages. The price is
right at 10 Euros/year. One feature I really like is when I post a
message to a newsgroup, and then poll the server for new messages, my
message appears almost instantly. That verifies that my message
actually arrived at the server. This is in contrast to my previous
nightmare service, where my messages might appear up to an hour later,
or sometimes disappear for no obvious reason.

For a news reader, I've been using Forte Agent since the 1990's: <https://www.forteinc.com>
    <https://www.forteinc.com/agent/support.php>
Forte Agent is a fairly old news reader which has changed owners
several times over the years. Development stopped in approximately
2014. The company still accepts registration payments indicating that
    they might still be alive.

There are some good alternatives that run on Linux, but nothing I
would recommend for Windows, except maybe Thunderbird, which I haven't
    used for a long time.

I need the paid version of Outlook because I use a POP/3 setting. This

Do you really need POP? I'd suggest considering IMAP, you can
still access e-mail from multiple client platforms and leave it on
the server as you wish. I've done this with Outlook for many
years now. FWIW, I access about half a dozen different e-mail
accounts with Outlook on my laptop, and can also run the Outlook
app on my ANdroid phone. Works quite well.

Thunderbird is good but slow and I would possible like to go to Outlook
but it will cost $70 a year. What are you all using for your email
program and getting the newsgroup. Pretty sure Andrew is doing what I do
but maybe not for all email.

For newsgroup access, I use Thunderbird. It works fine for me. I've seen
no reason to use it for email, even though I could if I chose to.

Hm. I use Thunderbird for email because the built-in features cover what
I need. For newsgroup (usenet) access on Windows I use a very old
shareware programm called Agent, in combination with a local
installation of a NNTP proxy (and cache) called leafnode, accessible
only on my internal network at home. My netnews provider is News.Individual.NET, costing me 10 EUR per year.
