Had a ride around the Beacons yesterday, mainly to climb the Devils Elbow.

Which is quiet back road, I’ve crosssed the Roman or pre Roman road that
runs along the ridge edge but that’s MTB with baby heads rock gardens so
way beyond road bike even Gravel bike terrain!

After some exploring of some trails and a cafe stop in some Forrestry land, plus as it’s a busy time for the farmers had a wait for the sheep to be herded!

I rode down the A470 which drops from the hill pass to the valley below
over few miles, in the car feels much steeper so I had assumed be a
freewheel but wasn’t quite steep enough or rather I needed to keep topping
up the speed , to keep my speed in the 32/35 mph range, which appears to be about the limit of my cadence now, about 100ish back in the day could hold 130ish though a different bike.

Other hills in the area never comes up as they are 9% rather than 3% so you’ll gain speed unless you brake which you’ll need to as corners, where as down from Storey Arms no braking required, very consistent 3% and fairly mild corners one slightly steep one, but good sight lines so can bank and slingshot though, with out braking.

On downhills I can get my cadence up to 100 when I run out of gears but on the flats and particularly into the wind I am stuck at 50 (which had always been my best power) so
I have to shift up to get more speed. It was very evident yesterday as I shifted up in the 50 tooth through the 11-32 that I was gaining 1-2 mph per shift and toped out at 17 mph. In one spot there was a slat fence on one side and that turned the wind
from off of the right side to following and my speed went up to 22. I was paying more attention to oncoming bikes at that place on the trail rather than the cadence so I don't know if I shifted up or just spun.

I don't think I'd ever be pedaling to "top up" a 30+ mph speed, unless I
was trying for a surge before a short rise of some kind. I just tuck in and/or use the aerobar if one is present on the bike.

At those speeds, it's faster and more efficient to coast rather than
pedal, no matter what your gearing.

I did use the drops to see if that would keep the speed above 30mph, but gradient didn’t seem sufficient it’s 3% possible it was into the wind? For it not to slowly drop, hence I kept topping it up,

Looking on Strava the times and average speeds over the almost 4 miles, are remarkably similar ie most folks are in the low 30’s is a few high 30’s which seem to be folks like Conner Swift ie pro riders.

Almost every other hill has been steep enough that gravity pulls one down.

Considering that it’s the Brecon Beacons which the National parks have rebranded as Bannau Brycheiniog which is named after an Irish King who
ruled the Beacons pre Norman’s that kinda fits!
