The old MTB, is my main commute bike, which is becoming my grandfather axe/broom with relatively little original remaining, being the frame/seat post/stem/handlebars.

Thought it felt rather vague the last commute, and on way home adjusted the headset, as stuff getting loose over time is common with that bike.

Heard a click as the stem cap snapped!

last year the rear mech disintegrated was a cheap mech which potentially
was glued together. But even so a 1st! Was 9 years old and had done 19K
miles, even so seems somewhat low lifespan!

The stem bolt was 20 years old so probably fair enough, picked up a new one
as I passed the bike shop en route to the train station other day which
    works fine!

The stem cap bolt shouldn't be doing any work. It's used to set the
headset preload, and once you tighten the stem bolts you should be able
to remove the cap bolt if you want to. If it snapped, it was under some
tension and an indication that your headset wasn't set up correctly.

It was fairly corroded so snapped when I tightened it back up, after
    tightening the stem bolts.

Ah, I see, I misread that.
