Why not go all the way? Reach down and lift the chain from one ring
to the other with your thumb and finger.

Well, yes.
IMHO lever fronts do shift better than any cable model.

Seems to me that there'd be some sort of a disadvantage to reaching
down to that lever while cranking to complete the shift. It would've
been for me being a bit on the awkward side.

Long ago, I purchased a few boxes of bicycle junk parts. Included was
a Simplex shifter-derailleur. I think it was a clamp on mount, not
braze on. I didn't have a reason or time to try it. When I moved out
of the Pomona area, I gave it to someone who claimed they could use
it.

I used down tube shifters for years and years with no problrms. While
I don't claim his level in skili Eddy Merckx was once asked if he
missed many shifts and he replied, "I havent missed a shift since I
was 5 years old".

Downtube shifters are within easy reach. My Miyata 610: ><https://www.learnbydestroying.com/jeffl/pics/bicycles/Miyata-610.JPG> >However, the front "suicide" derailleur is mounted on the seat tube in
the normal position of the front derailleur. To reach that requires a
longer arm and more time to perform complete the shift (while looking
down instead of ahead). I haven't tried it, but I suspect it might be
rather awkward and dangerous.
