    Well, yes.

IMHO lever fronts do shift better than any cable model.

Seems to me that there'd be some sort of a disadvantage to reaching
down to that lever while cranking to complete the shift. It would've
been for me being a bit on the awkward side.

No experience of lever activated front Mech’s all have been cable be that indexed or friction as the downtube shifter was.

Folks I know who have electronic do say it’s a better snapper feel, though again i’m sure they are correct but I’m not convinced it would be worth the cost for me.

Long ago, I purchased a few boxes of bicycle junk parts. Included was
a Simplex shifter-derailleur. I think it was a clamp on mount, not
braze on. I didn't have a reason or time to try it. When I moved out
of the Pomona area, I gave it to someone who claimed they could use
    it.

I used down tube shifters for years and yes, on a climb they can be a

Downtube shifters are within easy reach. My Miyata 610: <https://www.learnbydestroying.com/jeffl/pics/bicycles/Miyata-610.JPG>
However, the front "suicide" derailleur is mounted on the seat tube in
the normal position of the front derailleur. To reach that requires a
longer arm and more time to perform complete the shift (while looking
down instead of ahead). I haven't tried it, but I suspect it might be
    rather awkward and dangerous.

All that seems a bit complex had two shifter lever mounted on the
down tube. One shifted the front derailer and one the rear. I used
them on several bikes over quite a number of years.

There are variants. The lateral movement type, as Mr Heine's
product, are a little awkward. The helical drive types such
as later Hurets I have used, (shown in your link) are much
more convenient. Just not as much as EPS or e-Tap or Di2.
