I was aggressively pushing a 3/8 HSS drill though a piece of 304 SS
round bar and I set the light cutting oil I was using on fire just
before I broke through. I don't recall even blinking. I just pushed it through a little further to make sure the hole would be big enough.
Then I leaned forward and blew out the flame.
The amazing part to me is I drilled 4 more holes in some steel pipe afterwards with the same drill bit, and the 3/8 pins went right on.
The fire doesn't surprise me at all. Before I started I told myself I should walk over to the lathe and grab the heavy cutting oil. What surprised me is that HSS drill is still a hole making machine. Maybe
that shouldn't surprise me either. HSS is known for being able to
tolerate some serious heat.
