• Quebec law to allow restaurants to charge for now shows.

From Dave Smith@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 19 17:42:42 2025
It sounds fair enough to me.Quebec is going to allow restaurants to
charge $10 a head for people who make reservations and then fail to show
up. There are a couple caveats to it. The reservation has to be for at
least 5 people and they cannot charge it if at least one of the party
    shows up.

i find that acceptable for lodging and camping reservations. i
don't think i've ever made any in this century which didn't have
a cancellation fee which increased the closer to the check in
    date it got.

but for a restaurant? that implies giving up credit card
information or a billing name and address for tables which are
easily filled if the restaurant is any good. an exception for
large groups of people i think would be acceptable, but beyond
that, nope, i'd have to pass.

The hairdresser I go to, started doing that a few years ago. Booking
requires a valid credit or debit card and your agreement to have it
charged if you don't show up.

Maybe they aren't easily filled. If a place is busy enough to need
reservations there is the chance that someone else has tried for a
reservation and couldn't get one because it was fully booked. Since it
applies to 5 or more someone would have had to put some tables
together. Now someone has to go and rearrange the tables.

It at least makes people think about the need to make and honour
    reservations.

It should be simple enough. I imagine that people will have to pay a
deposit for a reservation and it would be deducted from their bill when
they show up for the meal.

I guess the problem is how they deal with the billing for the person who
shows up. It applies to reservations for 5 or more, so if only one shows
up does that person get the $10 credit or do they get credit for the
whole reservation. That could almost make it a free meal for one.

I suppose the idea is that if people realize they will lose their money
if they don't show up they will think twice about simply not showing up
    for the reservation.

Honestly? The last time I've eaten anywhere that required
a reservation was 25 years ago. The food was great, but
no means packed nor people waiting outside or at the bar
    for a table.

For me, a reasonable amount of time is 30 minutes or less.
A restaurant that can't seat me in a reasonable amount of
time, I just go somewhere else.

We have on special occasions. One thing I've done a couple of times was
to make special arrangements ahead of time. It was always on a slow
night and always arranged with the owner/chef.

I'd call or stop in and tell them what I wanted. We'll order a drink,
then I want dinner for two, three courses, an appropriate wine. Do not
bring a menu to the table.

That's it. The chef decides what we will be eating! The chef liked it
because he was free to make things other than another serving of #4 on
the menu. If that is what he make it would have a twist of some sort to
    his preference.

Not something to do on a busy Saturday night, but on a half empty
Tuesday, the staff seemed to enjoy it too.

The pandemic changed things for some restaurants. Some places imposed
space restrictions so eateries had to reduce the number of tables. Other
places are in high enough demand that you won't get in without a
    reservation or waiting in line.

In some places there just aren't many restaurants and it is basically impossible to get a table without a reservation. We were visiting some
people in Denmark and planned to take them out to dinner. We had
contacted them ahead of time and asked them to make some reservations.
There was only one restaurant in town and apparently impossible to get
into without a reservation and they had no luck. Not a total loss
because they ordered Smorsbrot for dinner.

When we were in Paris last year we stayed in a restaurant that had a
tone of restaurants and we had no problem dropping in for a meal but did
make a reservation at a nice place for our anniversary. However there
was one night that we kept striking out. It was a holiday so all the
locals were going out to eat. We went to more than a dozen places before
    we finally got a table.

That would be in the rarefied atmosphere of high end dining. Reserving
tables at restaurants 24 hours in advance would be somewhat optimistic
i.e. I could be dead by then. A few months in advance would be wildly optimistic. Well, either that or I have a really short attention span.
    That would explain a lot.

There is a place near here that charges $95 per person for
reservations. They have a chef's table that requires a $250 per person
prepaid. FWIW it is has one Michelin star.

It is a splurge but certainly would not replace my local pizza place.
I've been to a few very memorable places. It is not just the food, it
is an experience as soon as you walk in the door.

Like the Inn at Princeton many years ago. They seated you in like a
living room, brought cocktails and the waiter discussed the menu with
you. Nice place to relax. When dinner was ready, you were escorted to
    your table.

The private room at Chez Pierre was a treat. Others though we must be celebrities in a special room.

i don't like being in crowded restaurants. whether it's just my
wife and i or whether it's a group, we make it a point to arrive
early before busy hours. for a group reservations are always made
at least a day in advance. we're usually done and leaving by the
time the restaurants fill up. the food and service is always much
better early too, as the staff isn't worn down yet. but if i'm ever
asked for anything more than my name for a reservation, there's
always a good someplace else to go.

How will this be enforced?  Are they required by whomever

    number?

It should be simple enough. I imagine that people will have to pay a
deposit for a reservation and it would be deducted from their bill when
they show up for the meal.

I guess the problem is how they deal with the billing for the person who shows up.

This is a tad different but doctor's offices sometimes charge $20 (or
so) if you make an appointment and don't show up and don't call to
cancel. They'll send you a bill in the mail.

My wife's gynecologist was going to bill her for a missed appointment.
She had to deal with the receptionist who was playing hardball but she eventually relented because there were extenuating circumstances. The

time to cancel but there were extenuating circumstances. She had had a detached retina and had laser surgery for it and the after care involved being face down 24/7 for 10 days. She would have been unable to assume
that legs up feet in the stirrups thing. Yes, she could have called but
she was so upset about the ordeal she was going through that she forgot

    That's wonderful, Officer Dave!
Did you have to flash your badge to get them to relent?

i.e. I could be dead by then. A few months in advance would be wildly
optimistic. Well, either that or I have a really short attention span.
    That would explain a lot.

i don't like being in crowded restaurants. whether it's just my
wife and i or whether it's a group, we make it a point to arrive
early before busy hours. for a group reservations are always made
at least a day in advance. we're usually done and leaving by the
time the restaurants fill up. the food and service is always much
better early too, as the staff isn't worn down yet. but if i'm ever
asked for anything more than my name for a reservation, there's
always a good someplace else to go.

For many years there was an annoying trend in Stockholm where they would
push the tables closer and closer together. It became unbearable having a stranger sitting so close to you. I think they went too far, so lately the tables have been coming apart again! =)

This is scientifically proven! You can also ask local people, taxi drivers
as well. Care must be taken with taxi drivers in certain countries though, because they get a commission to take you to crap places.

This brings to mind a memory from Orlando 2 decades ago, when a taxi
driver insisted about 9 times to take us to this great place "the
dollhouse". 9 times we refused and asked him to take us to where we wanted
    to go.

He did not receive any tip.

You're changing the topic from "Are all rich people assholes" to "Your
country will be invaded". That doesn't make much sense.

Obviously, there's some rich folks that don't want to take over the
government or have power over the teaming masses. My point was that it's
not going to change the course of events. In the end, the rich will all
fall in line or flee America. At that point, all the nice guys in the
world, won't prevent a crazed America from grabbing whatever territory
they can. Oe ka olelo hope.

    i'll just leave this right here;

Collapse is baked into their business plans."

now, after reading that, why do you think the wealthiest of the
wealthy are building space travel machines and have a desire to
inhabit Mars? for the sake of humanity? or because they know
    what's coming?

I'd rather hoard a good and loving community than bars of gold. That' what

If things progress in the way it's going, your
country will be invaded and taken from you.

Won't work. We've been preparing for a couple hundred years.

Don't take this personnaly; you won't likely invade from Hawaii.

Given that practically nobody here gots guns probably
means that no Canadians would shoot any Americans.

Then we will treat you to tea & scones until you get sick and leave.

I thought there are plenty of hunting rifles in canada? I would also
think that if the american invaded you would drown them in maple syrup!
It is very difficult to wade through rivers of maple syrup. That's when
    you attack!

They won't have any maple syrup when the invasion comes. By that time,
trump will have extorted all their syrup.

We do have guns. Not as many as Americans but more than most people

Ahhh... so that's the reason for the maple syrup wars. I also think it is banned in wars in some kind of international treaty. The reason everything

Paper only here as well. I just glanced at it

She has a calendar and an appointment book. The latter is where she
notes most of her appointments. I tend to use my phone. This has
nothing to do with me being embarrassed about her groinocology
appointment. She was just overwhelmed with concern about the the

I knew nothing about the other appointment. She has a busy life and goes
off to do her thing. The point was that it had slipped her mind because
she was so worried about the eye surgery. She was afraid that she was
going to lose her eye and had to go through that face down recovery. If
you know anyone who has been through it they can explain what an ordeal
    it is.

My aunt had a detached retina and had to spend a few weeks face down on
the bed with a special pillow to make sure it didn't detach again after
the surgery. Without following those specific instructions she could
have gone blind. Seems to me that's a lot more important than
    forgetting to cancel another appointment.

Yes, it seems like chaos. But I'm meticulous about maintaining

That was the deal here. They use a laser to stitch the retina back in
place and then inject a gas bubble. You then have to lie face down so
the bubble with float and press the retina into place. It's the being
face down part that males it float to the retina.

It was an ordeal She was allowed to get up once an hour 5 minutes and
that was the time to go to the washroom, to eat etch. She also had to
deal with the regimen of eye drops, some of which were hourly, some
every two hours, ever four hours and every 8 hours. I had to make up a
schedule to keep track. To make matters worse she could not touch her
eyes at all, not even to wipe off the drops. After a few days the junk
started crusting up and the fluid was building up so everything looked
swollen. I was dreading her looking in a mirror and seeing how bad it
looked. Then one day we was using the tablet. It was sitting on the
floor and when it was booting up the screen was reflective enough that
should could see it. Not a happy camper.

It was pretty scary. She had seen her ophthamologist in Niagara Falls
in the morning. He referred her to see a specialized in Hamilton for appointment three hours later. We got down there and he advised her that
he could do it but if it didn't work she would lose her retina and if
that happened she would lose her eye. The options were to book her into
the hospital and there was a possibility that they could do it that
night or she could come back at 8am the next morning.

He described the process and the remaining face down part and I was
reminded of a friend telling me about having gone through it how
horrible it had been. I knew she was not going to like that.

The follow-up was a drag. We had to go to Hamilton for thee surgery.
Then we had to go back the next morning, and the morning after that,
then every second day for a week and then twice a week, once a week and
that went on for about 12 weeks, then once a month for the rest of the
    year.

It was about an hour and a half drive each way. She would have to sign
in, wait for a while, get called in for a pre exam test and dilating
drops, then wait for about an hour, taken to the examination room,
another 10-15 minute wait and finally, 2-3 minutes with the doctor.
    That got tiresome.

I just read an interesting book about an American B17 pilot who managed

I don't think wine goes with murgh makhni.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of wine pairings for Murgh Makhani:
    White Wines:
Chardonnay: A creamy, unoaked or lightly oaked Chardonnay can be a great
match, as its buttery notes and acidity cut through the richness of the
    creamy sauce.
Riesling: An off-dry German Riesling with its high acidity and subtle
sweetness can also be a refreshing pairing, especially if the dish has
    more spice.
Pinot Gris: Like Chardonnay, a Pinot Gris can be a good choice,
especially if you want a wine that's a bit more aromatic and fruity. Gewürztraminer: This wine's exotic aromas and slight sweetness can
amplify the dish's flavors, but it's best for those who enjoy a more
    aromatic wine.
Prosecco: The lower alcohol and cleansing bubbles of Prosecco can be a refreshing choice, particularly if you're looking for something lighter
    and bubbl

Bonanza was a goofy television show about a wonderful christian family

    called the "ponderosa".

Seriously, Americans are generally treated better than
English Canadians in Quebec because the separatist-dominated
media have convinced Quebecers that all problems in Quebec
originate with a cabal of old-world monarchists.

I'm not sure how much DJT has soured this, but all you need
to learn is one phrase "S'il vous plait" which means "Please".

Most french speakers here have learned English in school to the point
where they can understand Americans, and they are usually happy
to practive their english. The problem(?) is that their english
is not accurate enough for them to discern a USA accent, thus
if you start in english only, they may assume you are just using
your anglo 'privilege' because english-speaking Canadians similarly
all know enough french that that they can at least start in french.

So make sure they know you are from USA, or they will just
pretend they do not understand you at all. You might try a discreet
stars & bars lapel pin, but a MAGA hat might be pushing your luck.

It's hard to say. I have never had problems in Quebec, but I have heard
from others who have. One was Cheap Bob who was born in Quebec and lived
there until he was about ten. Another was our neighbour's son in law.
He was driving along out to the Gaspe on a nice summer day with the car
windows down. Someone pulled up beside him and yelled at him he should
go back to where he came from. He was heading back to where he came
from. He was born and raised in Gaspe. It was funny to hear him relate
the incident with his very prominent French accent.

The official 2025 USA flag has 13 red and white stripes representing the
13 original colonies in the 18th century. It also has a field of
Orange-red turds on a blue background representing those godly states
which fervently support our beloved dictator. The bottom-most "white"
stripe is actually slightly yellowish orange, representing our leader's
orange tint, and also his urine stain, which we pledge our allegiance to.

    Stars and stripes.

Stars and bars was the flag of the Confederate States of America.
(And I wish we'd shown them the door in 1861.) Not the Confederate
battle flag that you see displayed everywhere in Maga-land, though.

The official 2025 USA flag has 13 red and white stripes representing the 13 original colonies in the 18th century. It also has a field of Orange-red turds on a blue background representing those godly states which fervently support our beloved dictator. The bottom-most "white" stripe is actually slightly yellowish orange, representing our leader's orange tint, and also his urine stain, which we pledge our allegiance to.

That's racist Hank! Please control yourself, or our leader will deport
    you!

Thanks; I was not aware of the South 'non-battle' flag.

Hardly anybody is, because those yahoos would rather display the
flag of a traitorous, losing army.

There is a special kind of army there because these guys carry on about freedom and democracy but then suggest they are ready to overthrow a democratically elected government when the vote doesn't go their way,
and that the rights they boast about are not for everyone.
