It sounds fair enough to me. Quebec is going to allow restaurants to
charge $10 a head for people who make reservations and then fail to show
up. There are a couple caveats to it. The reservation has to be for at
least 5 people and they cannot charge it if at least one of the party
shows up.

deposit for a reservation and it would be deducted from their bill when
they show up for the meal.
I guess the problem is how they deal with the billing for the person who shows up. It applies to reservations for 5 or more, so if only one shows
up does that person get the $10 credit or do they get credit for the
whole reservation. That could almost make it a free meal for one.
I suppose the idea is that if people realize they will lose their money
if they don't show up they will think twice about simply not showing up
for the reservation.
Honestly? The last time I've eaten anywhere that required
a reservation was 25 years ago. The food was great, but
no means packed nor people waiting outside or at the bar
for a table.
For me, a reasonable amount of time is 30 minutes or less.
A restaurant that can't seat me in a reasonable amount of
time, I just go somewhere else.

Maybe they aren't easily filled. If a place is busy enough to need reservations there is the chance that someone else has tried for a reservation and couldn't get one because it was fully booked. Since it applies to 5 or more someone would have had to put some tables
together. Now someone has to go and rearrange the tables.
It at least makes people think about the need to make and honour reservations.

I have to admit that even though it is only a 15 minute drive from my
house I have no plans to go there. I have little interest in paying a
fortune for a meal where it takes the server longer to describe the
course than it does to eat it.

That would explain a lot.
i don't like being in crowded restaurants. whether it's just my

early before busy hours. for a group reservations are always made
at least a day in advance. we're usually done and leaving by the
time the restaurants fill up. the food and service is always much
better early too, as the staff isn't worn down yet. but if i'm ever
asked for anything more than my name for a reservation, there's
always a good someplace else to go.

Won't work. We've been preparing for a couple hundred years.

Da Hawaiians aren't interested in invading another country. Those days
are over. I did not realize that the Canadians did not have guns.
Perhaps you guys should think about getting some. My guess is that Musk
will start producing handheld Tesla gauss guns real soon. I'm certain
that the Canadians will be able to buy 'em by the truckload. It's all
good, you know.
This is good! The US is a meritocracy now.

there's nothing there to sustain them. even if they build
a colony there it is highly unlikely they'll make it. first
we need a colony on the moon which can sustain itself, but
really once you get out of a gravity well like the planet

I just read an interesting book about an American B17 pilot who managed
to make it through 25 missions. He was a patriotic guy who signed up to
serve his country and he had a lot of close calls. In the epilogue he laments the current political climate and his fears that the country
seems headed to a civil war. It is a recently published book but before
the last election.

The Trump voters would still be around. The next president might be
Hulk Hogan.
Would be an improvement.
I just read an interesting book about an American B17 pilot who managed
to make it through 25 missions. He was a patriotic guy who signed up to
serve his country and he had a lot of close calls. In the epilogue he
laments the current political climate and his fears that the country
seems headed to a civil war. It is a recently published book but before
the last election.
What was his name? or at least the title of the book? I hope it isn't a
canadian state secret.
Years ago several lezzies told me that "pussy tastes like shrimp"...

There is a place near here that charges $95 per person for
reservations. They have a chef's table that requires a $250 per person
prepaid. FWIW it is has one Michelin star.

I hate to break to to you, Hank. Bonanza was
a West-USA late 1800s, not an evangelical.
It did air on Sunday nights though. I remember because
it aired 9 to 10 PM, and we had to be in bed "because
it was a school night".

Me, either. I like ethnic food, and I never got the hang of drinking

I don't think wine goes with murgh makhni.

If Jesus, Mohammed and Abraham had mass media to promote
their best ideas commercially, it might all have worked
out so different.

Won't work. We've been preparing for a couple hundred years.
Don't take this personnaly; you won't likely invade from Hawaii.
Given that practically nobody here gots guns probably
means that no Canadians would shoot any Americans.
Then we will treat you to tea & scones until you get sick and leave.
We don't need no steeking guns. We have a secret weapon.... Quebec.
That's a hornet nest you don't want to be hitting with a stick.
how well would my wife and i fare if we showed up at the Bell
Centre for a Buffalo vs Montreal game wearing Sabres colors and
able to speak exactly zero French during the next (25/26)
season? considering current events that is. we're planning on
book a cruise out of Montreal in 26 and want to spend some time,
like a few days, there before departing.

So make sure they know you are from USA, or they will just
pretend they do not understand you at all. You might try a discreet
stars & bars lapel pin, but a MAGA hat might be pushing your luck.

Stars and stripes.
Stars and bars was the flag of the Confederate States of America.
(And I wish we'd shown them the door in 1861.) Not the Confederate
battle flag that you see displayed everywhere in Maga-land, though.

The official 2025 USA flag has 13 red and white stripes representing the
13 original colonies in the 18th century. It also has a field of
Orange-red turds on a blue background representing those godly states
which fervently support our beloved dictator. The bottom-most "white"
stripe is actually slightly yellowish orange, representing our leader's orange tint, and also his urine stain, which we pledge our allegiance
to.

Thanks; I was not aware of the South 'non-battle' flag.

Hardly anybody is, because those yahoos would rather display the
flag of a traitorous, losing army.
