• Jain Diet

From Ed P@21:1/5 to All on Thu Apr 3 19:01:06 2025
I'm thinking of starting this. Vegetarian is good, vegan more extreme,
but this is over the top. Want to join me?

The Jain diet emphasizes a plant-based diet that minimizes harm to
living organisms. It is a highly restrictive diet that requires careful planning to ensure adequate nutrient intake

    Can Jains eat chocolate?
Everything chocolate which contains cocoa powder is non - Jain and
forbidden to eat as the process of making cocoa powder from the beans
involves heavy fermentation which kills infinite amounts of jeevas.

    Why don't Jains eat spinach?
The reason Jains do not consume a certain category of vegetables is
because each part of such a plant contains infinite lives. This includes
not only root vegetables, but also other plants like aloe, spinach,
    sprouts etc

    Can Jains have potatoes?
Strict Jains do not eat root vegetables, such as potatoes, onions, roots
and tubers, as they are considered ananthkay. Ananthkay means one body,
but containing infinite lives. A root vegetable, such as potato, though appearing to be a single object, is said to contain infinite lives.

    Can Jains bathe?
This is considered sinful in Jainism. To protect these living beings,
Jain monks and nuns do not take baths. Jain monks and nuns, no matter
what the weather is, whether it is freezing cold or sweltering hot, they
always sleep on the ground, that too without any bedding.

I thought you didn't include Indians, Saudi Arabians and Turkmenistani
    in "Asians".

Americans don't typically consider Indian people to be Asians. Mostly
it's because they are so different culturally from the Chinese and
Japanese. The same is true for the Filipinos. For Americans, it's not a
matter of geography but of culture. In the end, culture is more
    important than proximity.

I used to open up the extremely large Asian collection at the school
library on Saturday. I had to go to the back of the library to get to
the light switch. Sometimes I did it in complete darkness. It was a long
walk back there through the Indian section. The books reeked of cumin
and coriander i.e., curry. The pulp paper of the books was infused with
    the stuff.

Yep. He went back to India to visit is mortally ill mother and found her
to be in good health and came back a few weeks later with his new wife.
I never saw him again after the wedding.

Yes, Indians are rather olfactorily overwhelming. I once went to a
grog shop next to an Indian restaurant. It was run by Anglo
Australians but smelled heavily of curry.

My father ordered a 1968 Mercury Montclair 4 door hardtop for my mother
with an AM radio and Stereo-sonic tape system...

It came with a complimentary tape titled The Ford Family of Fine Music.
We wore that tape out. My favorite song on it was the Hawaiian War chant
by the Norman Luboff Choir. I can still sing it to this day:

Tahuwai la a tahuwai wai la
Ehu hene la a pili koo lua la
Pututui lu a ite toe la
    Hanu lipo ita paalai

Tahuwai la a tahuwai wai la

    I also can't tell a Brit from a German, a Frenchman or a Dutchman,
unless they do or wear something iconic (baguette, bowler hat, finger

Actually, most of the time I can tell a Chinese from a Japanese from a

But can you tell a Kazach from a Turkmen? Ha! I didn't think so.

So Hawaii is the happiest state in a country that ranks 23rd in the

It's going to take a long time to recover the damage done to those
alliances. I realize that a lot of Americans don't like Trump and have
reached out to the rest of us to disassociate themselves from the
vitriol and lies Trump is spewing, but it is an issue involving the
entire country and it will be difficult for most of use not to lump all Americans in the the vortex of the MAGA mess.

You like remember the days before free trade. The modern free trade
movement was let by the US under Reagan. NAFTA was signed 30 years ago
but then it was renegotiated 6 years ago at the insistence of Trump. You
will recall him announcing the best deal ever.

There were some things he didn't like about it. He doesn't like our
supply management system which works to stabilize supply and prices and
which makes dairy farming reasonably profitable. Now he is whining
about the tariff structure he had agreed to. He has been less than
honest about the amount of tariffs that have been charged because they
have not paid any. They was a cap in the amount that could be exported
to Canada and there would be tariffs on anything in excess of that. They
have never hit that threshold. Meanwhile, the US subsidizes farmers.
That leads to over supply and they need to find somewhere to dump the
    excess.

Trump is now pulling the plug on the new USMCA. It is another case of
the US reneging in a treaty it negotiated and signed... the Treaty of Versailles, the Paris climate change agreement, the JCPOA to control
Iran's nuclear program and many more. You have to wonder about the
value of signing a treaty with the US when they walked away from so many
    of them.

The US still crows about how Europeans would be speaking German if it
weren't for them in WW I & II, but those wars would have been a lot
shorter and seen few dead and less devastation if the US had not waited
years to join their allies. Bush sure whined when Canada did not join
them in Iraq. Our PM would not help because he didn't believe the crap
about WMDs and as it turned out, there weren't any.

Two hundred years of being neighbours, trading partners and allies, and
then Trump launches and economic war to destroy us so we will want to
join the US. When your best friend stabs you in the back you don't ever
    forget it.

Even cars "made" here will get hit for the imported parts in them. But
yes, it will Make America Great Again for only an additional $5000.

    https://www.slashgear.com/1759513/how-much-of-ford-f150-made-in-america/

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
just 32% of the Ford F-150 is made in America. This put the popular
American pickup at 58th on the 2024 American Made Index, according to a
    study by Cars.com.

Even Trump does not consider Canada to be a threat other than
to his ego because we refuse to humour his annexation threats.

He calls Canada a "cherished landmass". He wants to just rape
our country of its "raw earth metals" [sic] and electricity.
All he needs to do is find somewhere willing to put all the
anti-americans in prison for subversive acts & speach &c.

I hear Russia and China are running out of jailed prisoners,
Russia with their war, and China because of job 'burnout'
and because child labourers are demanding more 'play-time'.

Maybe Trump can make a deal with North Korea as well.

A good bit of the material was destroyed or simply worn out.
Some the debt was simply written off. But yes, the Lend Lease
Act was in the interest of the USA. The last of the bill the

some of their debt was written off. The last payment that
cleared the books with the U.K. was in 2006 if memory serves

BTW, Joan, "Speaking of Ukraine" the leftist NY Times just had a huge
BOMBSHELL article about how we've been LIED to by the Biden
administration and our "allies" in Ukraine... this is to the Ukraine War
what "The Pentagon Papers" were to the Vietnman War...

The article is by the BEST investigative reporter out there, Matt Taibbi
    (he is a 'classic liberal'):

"...the NY Times has run a 13,000-word “Secret History” that shows the
same U.S. officials who denounced Trump and American voters for saying
it out loud long ago concluded that they, too, should probably “walk
away... Biden & Company risked our lives and our children’s lives,
knowingly, repeatedly, and for the worst possible reason: politics.
Afraid to admit a mistake, they planned individual excuses while letting bureaucratic inertia expand the conflict... We were supplying weapons to
a “partner” who was blackmailing us into a conflict with a very
dangerous enemy by using American equipment to invade a region, Kursk,
that’s about as far south of Moscow as Columbia, South Carolina is from Washington... If you’re counting, that means we were lied to about the
risk of World War, the chance of “victory,” the desire for negotiations, the success of last year’s counteroffensive, the solidity of our
relationship with Ukraine, and the significance of U.S.-backed
incursions into Russia ... the Biden
administration instead berated its critics as treasonous cowards who’d
have let Hitler swim to London..."

    RACKET NEWS:

Biden Lied About Everything, Including Nuclear Risk, During Ukraine
    Operation
Sourced to tone-deaf "U.S. officials," a massive New York Times exposé
reveals an unprecedented betrayal of American voters, but also Ukraine

    https://www.racket.news/p/biden-lied-about-everything-including?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

"When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House
nearly a month ago, the New York Times packed its pages with stories
denouncing Donald Trump and J.D. Vance for abandoning Ukraine, and the impolitic “dressing down” of a friendly foreign leader...

The Times like most Western news outlets for years suggested that
anything short of a full-throated expression of support for war was a
betrayal of the “democratic world order” that would lead to instant battlefield deaths...

Now that the war appears lost, and newspapers abroad (conspicuously, not
here) are full of news about an apparent bombing of Vladimir Putin’s motorcade, and the future of NATO hangs by a thread, the Times has run a 13,000-word “Secret History” that shows the same U.S. officials who denounced Trump and American voters for saying it out loud long ago
concluded that they, too, should probably “walk away.”...

The piece is also an extraordinarily comprehensive betrayal of Zelensky
and Ukraine, exponentially worse than the “dressing down” by Trump...

Authored by longtime veteran of controversial intel pieces Adam Entous,
it’s sourced to 300 American and European officials who seem to be
responding to their apparent sidelining via a shameless tantrum,
exhibiting behavior that in the field would get military men shot...

Not only do they play kiss and tell with a trove of operational secrets,
they use the Times to deflect blame from their own failures onto
erstwhile Slavic partners, cast as ignorant savages who snatched defeat
from the jaws of America-designed victory...

It’s as morally abhorrent a piece of ass-covering ever as I’ve seen in print, and that somehow is not its worst quality...

The Ukrainians sometimes saw the Americans as overbearing and
controlling — the prototypical patronizing Americans. The Americans
sometimes couldn’t understand why the Ukrainians didn’t simply accept
good advice… Where the Americans focused on measured, achievable
objectives, they saw the Ukrainians as constantly grasping for the big
    win, the bright, shining prize...

The Ukrainians, we learned, “increasingly kept their intentions secret,” and were “angered” by America’s reluctance to “give them all of the weapons and other equipment they wanted,” while refusing to take “politically risky steps” to help them...

While the Times piece does little to clear up whose fault the military
and diplomatic failure was (there were numerous passages of the
“mistakes were made” variety), it’s clear we were lied to about everything...

Zelensky and his set will no doubt tell their side now, and it’s
possible Ukraine’s freelanced heightening of risk to Americans will come
    out seeming less treacherous...

Either way, it’s clear the Biden administration should have cut the cord years ago, to prevent Americans from being dragged into World War by “partners” with every incentive to pull them in...

Instead, the administration berated its critics as treasonous cowards
who’d have let Hitler swim to London..."

Some of that discussion should have been behind closed doors. It was
shameful they way that Trump and the crackhead's offspring chastised
Zelensky in camera. It would not be unacceptable for Zelensky to offer
access to essential minerals in exchange for assistance but it was not appropriate for Trump to make it so obvious that future aid was
dependent on handing over access to Ukraine's minerals. The behaviour of
Trump and Vance was childish and embarrassing.

doesn't have a problem with that.

The evangelical christians here contributed a large share of trump's
votes in the elections he has won.

He would not have been successful without their ardent support. Now, he
is giving them exactly what they voted for. He is their new, improved Jesus.

There will be some whining, but they will continue to love and support
the Savior. I have seen photos of him holding a bible while quelling a riot.

He will get rid of all the mexicans, queers, and niggers too. If you're
a christian, what's not to like? And we'll all be rich simply by taxing
    other countries.

I don't see why you cannot understand how wonderful this is for us
    americans.

because he went along with our former friend/ally/ trade partner and hit

Some of that discussion should have been behind closed doors. It was
shameful they way that Trump and the crackhead's offspring chastised

No. two shitheads talking disrespectfully to a guy in his military

You have to be an incredible simpleton to think that those 2 punks

Trump’s Popularity Rises Amid Tariff Hysteria: Survey

    Jon Dougherty April 5, 2025

    https://conservativebrief.com/trump-amid-3-90611/?utm_source=CB&utm_medium=DJD

"President Donald Trump is enjoying a bump in popularity following his
move to impose sweeping new tariffs, which sent global markets into
    turmoil...

According to an exclusive DailyMail.com/J.L. Partners poll of over 1,000 registered voters conducted from March 31 to April 3, Trump remains
broadly popular across the U.S. The survey found his approval rating
climbing to 53 percent — a 4-point increase from the previous week, when
it stood at 49 percent, DailyMail.com reported...

Trump’s rising approval rating comes as a surprise, given the backlash
the White House has faced over the sweeping tariff order signed on
Wednesday. Among voters aged 18 to 29, his approval is up 13 points
since March 7. He also saw a six-point boost in favorability among both Democrats and independents, according to the survey...

Perhaps most strikingly, Trump’s support among Black voters jumped 17
points in just the past week. As for his universal 10 percent tariff on
all imported goods, the poll found that more Americans support the
    policy than oppose it...

Support for broad tariffs targeting China and the European Union has
also increased since last month. Additionally, voters showed strong
backing for tariffs focused on specific industries, including aircraft, plastics, precious metals, iron, and steel..."

Most Americans consider Canada and Canadians to be our friends. Our auto >>>> industry is closely tied with Canada's. A lot of people in the US are
driving cars made in Canada - they just don't know it.

They soon will, when they pay Trump's tax on imported
    cars.

I just bought a used Honda, before the tariffs pushed up the prices
    of even used vehicles.

It will probably serve you well. I didn't like the earlier hondas back
when they used a rubber timing belt, especially on engines that had
valve interference with the piston when the belt broke, but they stopped
    that crap years ago.

    It's the third Honda we've owned. 1986, 1998, and now 2022. We've
mixed it up by buying Toyotas, too. Although not very darned many
of them, since we like to hold our cars for at least 10 years. Notable exceptions were the Chevy S-10 we bought because we wanted something
on the cheap (it started falling apart after 3 or 4 years) and the
Toyota Matrix, which turned out not to have enough ground clearance
    to function properly in snow.

It was a big jump going from a 2001 vehicle (which I still have,
waiting for me to figure out how I want to sell it) to a 2022 vehicle.

Damn cockpit looks like the starship Enterprise. I haven't even
bothered to reset the clock, which appears to be on Pacific time.
I just mentally add 3 hours. I suppose I'll get to it soon, before
my husband starts fiddling with the controls while I'm driving.

It didn't come with a owner's manual. Well, it came with an owner's
manual for a 2019 version of the same car, which is not all that
useful. I've downloaded the manual, but I'm unwilling to print
all 400-odd pages of it. I think I'll just print the pages I need
as I require them. On the plus side, I think I can tell Adobe to
fit the page to the paper, and I'll have a large-print edition.
I think the glove compartment will accommodate 8.5x11 paper.

We must've bought it in the mid 90s. I know we got rid of it

Up here we have Rebel news pushing some sort of right wing agenda. I
recall a story from the early days of the pandemic when we were pretty
much locked down. Rebel was pushing a story about some poor sap who was
busted for taking his dog out to pee. Their line was that his poor
little dog had to do its business so the guy put a leash on it, took it
out to pee and then came right back and found two cops at his door.

It turned out there was more to it than that. The guy had just returned

to the country were required to quarantine for two weeks. Contrary to
the story of excessive zeal by the cops. This is not exactly a high
priority issue that would call for lights and sirens. It had taken them
some time to get there and then they had a fair wait for him to come

had complained multiple times and he had been warned by the cops. So
this time, after having to wait for him to get back, they charged him.

Rebel had made it look like some poor guy has slipped out for a minute
for his dog to do its business and the cops immediately showed up and
charged him. They ommitted the fact that they guy had been travelling,
that he had been out for an extended period, that there had been

case of some poor guy stepping out for two minutes and then facing the

My observation is that both ends of the political spectrum show a lot of bias. It is hard enough to get reasonably balanced reporting on the mainstream.  There seems to be an overabundance of right leaning
nonsense. Fox may deserve a bit of a break because, let's face it, it's
not even news. It's just entertainment. It is more of a reality show
    than reporting.

Up here we have Rebel news pushing some sort of right wing agenda. I
recall a story from the early days of the pandemic when we were pretty
much locked down. Rebel was pushing a story about some poor sap who was busted for taking his dog out to pee. Their line was that his poor
little dog had to do its business so the guy put a leash on it, took it
out to pee and then came right back and found two cops at his door.

It turned out there was more to it than that. The guy had just returned
from Mexico. The borders had been somewhat opened and people returning
to the country were required to quarantine for two weeks.  Contrary to
the story of excessive zeal by the cops. This is not exactly a high
priority issue that would call for lights and sirens. It had taken them

They certainly know how to slant a story. They made that poor dog
walker look like an innocent victim of a couple of overzealous cops. I
suppose the "victim" may have given a self serving account that made
him look totally innocent of any wrong doing, but if they are going to
run a public pity party it is their responsibility to check the facts,
so they were either totally remiss in that or else they purposely
omitted the relevant information to give their slant on things. They
lost all credibility for that one.

Then there is Fox News <?> and Tucker Carlson who had all those
documents that he was going to release that would destroy Biden's
chances of winning the election. After weeks of threatening to release
them it came time to put up or shut up. Somehow there was only one copy
of those documents and they were on a USB stick that got lost in the
mail. I sure as hell don't believe there were any such documents, but I
have no doubt that most Trumpsters and Fox news viewers probably believe
    he had those documents.

and a lot of body work. He gave me more than the dealership would and
came and got it. He was involved in some sort of refugee settlement and
he fixed up cars for the refugees. I could have given it to a charity
for the tax credit but cash worked a lot better for me.

Until we bought our 2025 Forester, my newest vehicle was vintage 2013.
That should do it for us. :(

Kars4kids is a religious charity aimed at Jewish kids to encourage them
    to be more observant.
    KidneyCarline or equivalent is preferable.

I might consider donating it to my local NPR station. Or Habitat
    for Humanity.

Better to donate it to Habitat. They can park it at Walmart so a family
    can live in it.

I take the standard deduction. Even donating my car wouldn't
be enough to make it worth itemizing.

Still, it would be easy. I've been considering donation (or calling
a scrapper) ever since the brakes kind of failed the last time I
pulled it into the garage. Apparently, I should have read the
report from my mechanic more carefully -- the part where he said
there wasn't enough brake fluid to measure the amount in the
    reservoir.

Brake lines and brake cylinders can leak. If it is on the power side of
the the system it is under pressure and can fast.

I like working on brakes - it's fun!

So why do American cars not sell in Japan?

American companies have simply failed to produce cars that appeal to
    local tastes...

Japanese drivers want compact, fuel-efficient vehicles that balance
excellent safety and reliability with superior value for money...

Furthermore, fully one-third of sales are kei cars, ultra-light vehicles
with small engines that are taxed at a lower rate. It’s a category no US maker even builds...

The most popular American autos, meanwhile, are simply too big for
    Japanese roads and parking spaces...

Some versions of the Ford F-150, long the top-selling vehicle in the US,
are so ludicrously large they can’t even be driven in the country with a standard driver’s license...

True(?) story. Well, from 'Readers Digest' mag when I was a tyke:

USA starts exporting cars to Japan. VP of one of the big 3 visits
his dealer in Japan, and sees the service garage filled with
    brand-new cars.

So he asks, "What's wrong with all those cars?". The reply was:

"It it different for each car. We always take them completely
apart and re-assemble to ensure they will be fixed of any
problem they might have from the factory."

True, Japan has onerous vehicle standards, the average US makes cannot comply...

About 4% of the market is imports, primarily BMW, Mercedes-Benz...

The only US make sold in any quantity is Jeep:

    Wiki:

"Jeep is by far Japan’s favorite American brand. As part of Fiat
Chrysler Automobiles, Jeep not only hangs on to the lion’s share of the
pie here but has been growing its sales figures every year for the past
decade. In 2019, Jeep was responsible for a 9.9 percent rise in overall
Fiat Chrysler Japan sales to 24,666 units..."

    It wasn't a track suit.

It was blindingly obvious they (and Glenn) were playing

Trump?s motivation was more venal. Zelenskyy has a higher approval rating than Trump. Both in Ukraine and internationally. He has been lauded as Churchillian, whereas Trump is rarely viewed favorably for his diplomatic skills.
