• First Visit to Trader Joe's on 6/15/2025

From ItsJoanNotJoAnn@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jun 16 18:01:42 2025
My neighbor persuaded me to go with her to Trader Joe's
on Father's Day. My very first visit in fact, but I
was a bit surprised at it not being a giant place.
Maybe this one is just an odd size.

Quite a few brands/items not normally seen in a
regular grocery store. But everyday items were
generally much more expensive than the grocery
store. I did opt for a highly recommended bag
of frozen Mandarin orange chicken and I also
picked up a bag of frozen vegetable fried rice
to accompany the chicken. It was ok and the
leftovers will be consumed for tonight's
    dinner.

It's a fair distance from my house and the
interstate traffic didn't enhance the experience.
Probably my one and only trip but I can say I've
    been to Trader Joe's!!

The one here in Evanston is tiny compared to a regular store..

Don't need as much space because they only carry their own - brand
stuff, no multiple brands saves space...

Their meat is expensive, cheese more reasonable, some of their frozen
    veg is good value...

That is my FAVE thing there, those large bags of frozen entrees are
    tasty and good value...

It's a "fun" place, but I only go several times per year, usually around
the holidays, they've got nice XMAS stuff...

It caters to the urban/liberal "college town" set, like Whole Foods...

We used to go to a TJs when we lived in CT. They are not big and you
certainly don't go for the money savings.

We'd go every couple of months for items not carried by the regular supermarkets. They had a nice variety of cheeses. I was introduced to Cotswold cheese there.

There is one just a few minutes past the BJs I go to. I should take a
spin though just to get some items not at the local stores.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if the
store I was in was small because of the building they
chose. But it was very, very crowded with shoppers
which kind of hindered me from looking at a lot of
stuff. Aisles were a bit narrow, and I felt like I
was just in the way a lot of the time.

I did see a good variety of cheeses, but didn't get
much time to look. There seemed to a crowd behind
me the whole time pressing me on. 😊

I've been trying to compare it with an Aldi about a mile
from my house. Honestly, I don't think it's quite as
large and the Aldi's I've been in are not known as
    being giant stores.

Yeah, no bargains to be found in their meat selections.

Yeah, I didn't see any children there and my neighbor
told me it's more for young professionals, couples
with no children, and empty nesters.

Is there a Lidl near you? They generally have a good selection of
cheeses, from cheap American slices, to excellent imported British,
    Spanish, and Italian varieties.
Their prices are much better than TJ's.

Depending on which direction I go, the nearest Lidl is
in either Virginia or North Carolina. A few to several
    hundreds of miles away.

Da Hawaiians go bat-shit crazy for T-Joe's. People who go to Las Vegas
are legally required to bring back snacks for family and friends when
they return. I've been to TJ's one time and I suppose it's okay if
you're into shopping for snacks. I'd like the joint better if they sold guitars.

    Not very convenient.
In NJ, there's one just a few minutes from our house, but in Scotland,
our nearest one is an 80 mile round trip. We make a day of it, going to
the bank, having a nice lunch, shopping for bits and pieces, ending with
    food shopping at Lidl.

I would not be driving a few hundred miles to find cheaper anything. I
don't understand people who drive to multiple grocery stores even within
the same town to save 10 cents. It would have to be a hell of a deal to
make me drive across town or go to multiple stores to buy the same thing.

I don't know about TJs but there is a store about 10 miles from us
called Farm Boy. They have good quality products but it is considerably
more expensive to shop there than at the other grocery stores.
Surprisingly, they tend to have food deals on fish and lamb. They also
have a soup and salad bar. Last month when our son and DiL brought home
their baby we stopped there and got them some brochettes, some salads
and soup to take to them. They were well received and very much enjoyed.

We had friends who had a gas guzzling truck that they used a week or two
a year to haul their camper trailer. They were thrilled when a new
Costco opened because it has a gas bar. They drove close to 40 miles to
get gas there because is was a couple cents per litre cheaper. I had to imagine hoe much it cost them for the gas they burned to get there and
back to save a buck or two on a tank of gas.

I miss doing things like that. It is not about the food prices, it is
    just a fun day out.

Trader Joe's was about 35 miles.

A couple of times a year we'd go to Nodine's smokehouse for bacon, maybe
a ham. About 75 miles each way.

Nearing retirement I cut back to working 3 days a week and one of the
"off" days we'd take off for things like that.

I haven't found a Lidl anywhere near me, but Aldi generally has a large selection of fairly priced cheese, and I gather that the two stores are
    fairly similar.
