I read this late Tuesday night. As no cause of death
was announced I'm going take a guess and say either
    a heart attack or stroke.

NY Times reports that someone (presumably her) was found unresponsive

Because there's never been any suspicion of depression
or drug use? I've not read of anyone stating she was

Plenty of speculation with celebrities. People do die in their 50s of
"natural causes", I know of a couple in the past. OTOH, celebrities are
more often found dead from substance abuse compared to the average guy
down the street. People often don't want to wait for facts.

Five years ago my then 46 year old niece to a heart attack. She had been
in excellent condition. She was very fit and active and was heavily
involved in Cross Fit. She, her husband and their 13 year old son had
just returned for a shopping trip to the market. She went upstairs to
use the bathroom and collapsed in the hallway.

Honestly, I had to look her up. I don't watch Food Network, for

Not only was she a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America
she was also an instructor there.  Went to Italy and worked in
various restaurants.  I can't speak for certain, but I imagine
she worked in Italy to gain more culinary knowledge.  What

and was a sous chef for Lydia Bastianich, became chef at Savoy,
then became the executive chef of Centro Vinoteca.  I, nor

She was obviously a celebrity because she was well known. She was a chef
and she had appeared on a number of cooking shows. Whether she got those
gigs because she was already a celebrity or if she became a celebrity
because of her many appearances may be something to discuss, but all
those appearance on cooking shows would qualify her as a celebrity chef.

I can't say that I was a fan of hers. She was too much of a reality TV
type of personality for me. Don't ask for too many examples of that from
me because my impression caused me to dismiss her as such so I never
    paid her much attention.

I pity celebrity chefs. No matter how good they are, people tend to tire
of them quickly. Maybe is is because they go too much for gimmicks and
    turn people off.

The same with Julia Child whom I thought THE BEST tv 'cook.'
Julia had published her now famous "French Cooking" book,
but if PBS had not given her a shot, we'd never known who
she was and most likely we'd never heard of her book either.
I can remember when PBS was a new station in the early 60s
and we'd watch Julia cook and wonder if she really served
that raw food to people. She got her rhythm going and learned
to have something already cooking in the oven and ready to
be served at the end of the program.

I can't say that I was a fan of hers.

I can't say I was a fan of Anne Burrell's either. The few
times I watched her show many years ago she was too 'frantic'
in the kitchen. But that comes down to trying to get a meal
on the table within a short time slot and some of that time
has to be given over to commercials. There were no
commercials on Julia's shows so she never seemed to get
    frantic.

But I take umbrage at Greg's post stating she was just
someone who was in front of a camera as if she had no
professional training. _I_ would be characterized as
someone standing in front of a camera with no professional
training and pretending to cook. That's something no one
here will ever have to endure.

I pity celebrity chefs. No matter how good they are, people tend to tire

Yeah, I'm not interested in watching cooking competition shows. For a

Yep. The contests devolved into a sort of reality shows. Contestants had
to become drama queens and it just went down the tubes.

I have had it with the food contests. Best Bobby Flay isn't too bad but
most of the rest are some variation of a reality show. The Food Channel
here is now the Flavor Network and over the last couple weeks I have
seen new and interesting shows. I think I am done with Guy Fieri. I
watched way too many triple D and I hated his grocery store challenge.

When I plan to watch something with a lot of commercials I often the
program. I can watch it after it is over or I can wait 20-30 minutes
into the program and start from the beginning. When commercial break
comes on I fast forward through them. Sometimes I end up catching up to
the live show. If you watch SNL without commercials the hour and a half
show only lasts about 45 minutes, the last half hour of the show without commercials is only about 10 minutes.

It was handy for the recent NHL playoffs. A game can run on TV for 3
hours or more but there are only 60 minutes of regular play in a hockey
    game.

    In my Discovery+ watchlist are:

Tournament of Champions (which I watch with a lot of fast-forward
    through Guy Fieri)
    Chopped
24 in 24: Last Chef Standing
    Ciao House
    Alex vs. America

And it's not really a competition:
Chopped After Hours (in which the judges cook some of the previous
    challenges)

The only food contest worth watching is the "Great British Bake-off".
No artificial drama and the contestants often help each other.

I'm not that fond of baking. I want to see savory food being cooked.

No commercials on streaming. It's clearly superior.

That depends on your streaming source. I use Tubi and it has
commercials. They are short and there are few of them. Most programs
start with 2 commercials that are only 15-20 seconds each, and then
there are commercials maybe every 15-20 minutes. There are so few and
they are so short it is not a problem.

It wouldn't be so bad to pay a little to avoid commercials but I don't
want to be paying monthly to a half dozen streaming services. I have
been on and off Netflix several times. The pattern has been to binge on
a few series and then run out of interesting programs. Then they raised
their prices and reduced their benefits. I often found myself spending
way too much time looking for something to watch. I spend less time
watching commercials on Tubi that I was spending trying to find
    something to watch on Netflix.

I only recently started watching YouTube. They have a lot of
interesting stuff on there and I only had to watch one or two adds and
could then watch multiple programs without any more.

I found some interesting documentaries there. My father flew Stirling
bombers and they had several programs about the Stirling, about the two different bomber squadrons he served with, in New Zealand and one
British. They also had a good series about the Allied armies fighting
across Italy and actually had a segment about my uncle, though they did
not mention him by name. My uncle led the first Allied patrol across
the Hitler Line at Pontocorvo and was noted for climbing a badly damaged
church steeple to ring the bell to sound the all clear.

No commercials on streaming. It's clearly superior.

That depends on your streaming source.

I later realized that I pay extra on Amazon and Netflix not
to see commercials. It's well worth it to me.

I don't use any free streaming service. We even pay YouTube not >>>>>>> to show us commercials. That's where we watch machining and welding >>>>>>> competence porn.

I haven't seen ads on YouTube since I installed UBlock Origin.

I can't install that on my television, which is where we watch >>>>>machining and welding videos on YouTube.

Just download them, although that could be difficult in an 80s
    text-only Unix screen :)

Why? I have a huge television with a nice soundbar and a small-ish >>>computer screen with junky speakers and a 100BASE-T Ethernet card.

You can download something and watch it on your TV :)

Or I could just stream it.

But then you won't know how to avoid ads, other than paying for it.

If I wanted to faff around installing and downloading stuff, I
    wouldn't have retired.

It's a lot less trouble than many boomers think :)

Question: if using UBlock Origin when watching Youtube videos, do you
still get those annoying messages saying ad blockers violate Youtube's

*determined* not to let you watch a how-to or entertaining videos

Or, like Cindy and some of the rest of us, you could spring for a
YouTube ad - free account, it's $13.95 per month, and when you sign up
    you get two months free...

[ Or, is your "Royal Purse" shrinking and you cannot afford that modest monthly cost...??? ]

But then, with you being a Neurotic White Girl Princess and all, you
prefer to be "outraged" and you'd rather whine and complain in lieu of
doing something "pro - active" about an easily - solved issue...

it's been a few months since i got my last message about
it but as usual i ignored it and continued what i was doing.

if they want to cut me off, then, well, so be it.

so far i'm still watching what i want and only seeing
sponsorship stuff (included in the video itself by the
maker of the video) and i usually skip over that too. if
i want to shop or buy stuff i know how to do it - ads
usually remind me of how much i don't like a certain
company if they show up at all.

The YT ads you have to skip don't bother me much. What bothers me is

    advertisements. What a waste!

*determined* not to let you watch a how-to or entertaining videos
without the ridiculous ads.  (I don't know about you but I have never
been convinced to buy something simply because I saw an advert.)  I
miss the days when Youtube was just a place to watch fun or
interesting videos without being bombarded by ads.  The acquisition by
    Google ruined it.

I remember when Youtube was bought out, and Google wanted me to make a
Google account to sign into Youtube, 2009 or so.  I don't like Google,
but YouTube was struggling financially before Google bought them.  I'm
sure they wouldn't be around today otherwise, and Youtube sure is more popular than ever.

I don't bother to sign into Google to view YouTube videos (although I do
have a Google Account) unless I wish to comment on a video. I don't use
Google as a search engine, either. It's far too intrusive. Firefox
with Duck Duck Go extension as the default browser. I took Graham's
advice and added UBlock Origin to Firefox to view the videos. What a difference!

The YT ads you have to skip don't bother me much.  What bothers me is
cable TV, where you pay $200/mo and 1/3 of the programming is advertisements.  What a waste!

I pay about $200 a month for cable TV bundled with Internet. I get lots
of channels that don't have advertisements or very minimal advertising.
I found a channel that runs nothing but old 'Alfred Hitchcock Hour' and
'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' 30 minute episodes. Hitchcock used to make
fun of what he called "sponsors" during his intro's and when a station
break was required in the middle of a show. When I'm watching those
shows now, I don't see ads. :) That's just one example.

I stream a lot on Tubi. There are a couple 10-15 second commercials at

to tolerate. If the commercials start getting longer or they string more together I will be dropping that.

    Yer DARN tootin', David...!!!

    EVANSTON ROUNDTABLE:

Elderly Evanston woman duped of $100K in scam - Evanston RoundTable

"Another two seniors were taken in by scams in recent months, with one
being stopped by loss prevention staff at the Jewel-Osco on the 2400
block of Howard while another lost $102,350, Evanston police said...

These scams come just a few weeks after an Evanston woman was duped into sending $62,000 to scammers pretending to be celebrity Kevin Costner...

    Losing $100,000:

According to police, scammers contacted a 76-year old Evanston woman on Facebook on May 9 and told her that her computer was at risk of
contracting a virus. She clicked a link and ended up speaking to someone
    over the phone...

The scammer told her that he worked for Microsoft. He also told her that
her bank accounts were at risk...

He advised her to transfer her bank accounts into Bitcoin, and four
transfers later, she was out over $100,000...

On June 5, her bank noticed the suspicious withdrawals, froze her
account and contacted her directly. On June 9, the woman filed a police report...

It’s unknown at this time if the woman will be able to get her money
    back...

    Stopping a $12,500 withdrawal:

Just two days after the 76-year old woman filed a police report,
different scammers almost were almost able to con an 83-year old woman
    of $12,500.

This woman reportedly got a call stating she’d won $250,000 and a
Mercedes from the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes. Scammers told
her that she needed to purchase gift cards to cover the taxes on the
    prize, police said...

She stopped over at the Huntington Bank at the Jewel Osco at 2485 Howard
St. During the process of attempting to withdraw $12,500, the store’s
loss prevention staff contacted the police department as they suspected
    it was a scam...

The police department arrived while this woman was still on the phone
with the scammer. They told the individual on the other end of the line
to stop calling this woman. Huntington Bank helped the woman close her
accounts and transfer her funds to new ones..."

I can PVR in my satellite receiver. It is interesting to FF through the commercials and see how much advertising you are being exposed to. SNL
is one of the worst. It's an hour and a half show but close to half of
it is commercials. It is a much shorter show when you watch only the
show and not the ads. FWIW when watching the recording and switching to
FF you see the time markers and when the ads are flashing by it is hard
to keep track of the ads as they zoom past because there are so many of
    them.

ABC national evening news is probably just as bad. One news
story, then commercials, one news story, then commercials
until I think I've seen maybe 12 minutes or so of news. I've

Our ABC is the only live tv I watch. It has no ads except the

Commercial TV isn't watchable due to too many ads.

Trump to visit 'Alligator Alcatraz' migrant detention center this week

    By Reuters - June 30, 2025

"WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected
to attend the opening on Tuesday of a temporary migrant detention center
in southern Florida dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz", a source familiar with
    the matter said...

The step comes as Trump, a Republican, has sought to ramp up the
detention and deportation of migrants, saying the measure was needed
after millions crossed the border illegally under Democrat Joe Biden...

The center got the nickname from its remote location in the Everglades,
a vast subtropical wetland teeming with alligators, crocodiles and
pythons that a Florida official said this month provides natural
    barriers, requiring minimal security..."

It's a heck of a story. It was da Hawaiians that moved the Lions International group into the modern era. A Japanese guy from Hawaii
traveled the mainland and petitioned the organization to allow
non-whites to join the club. In 1926, The Lions voted to change their constitution to allow colored folks membership. Beats me how he
convinced a convention hall of 10,000 white guys to approve of that.

Of course it beats you. It defies your perception that all white people
    are racist.

That's not true at all. I grew up with white people. The ones I know
aren't racist, they are, in fact, pretty cool dudes. OTOH, any club that
has a rule against non-white members is probably racist.

I'm also married to a white people. She's a great woman - although she
holds a grudge against white people on the mainland because of the way
they treated her Korean mom. She's racist that way but who can blame
    her?

My boss used to be a member of the Elks. He took his friend to the
clubhouse for lunch. This was probably in the 70's. While they were
eating, he suggested to his friend that he should consider being an Elk
member. His friend said that he couldn't because he was Japanese. This
shook up my boss and the next day, he resigned from the club. A short
time later, he got a letter from the Elks saying that they changed their
rules to allow non-whites and asking him to be a member again. That was
    so nice of them!

Obviously, my perception of him pretty much blows your perception of me
out of the water. Hopefully, you have a flotation device.

Question: if using UBlock Origin when watching Youtube videos, do
you still get those annoying messages saying ad blockers violate
Youtube's TOS?  I have Adblock Plus installed and I get those
messages all the time and sometimes the Youtube video display

entertaining videos without the ridiculous ads.  (I don't know

because I saw an advert.)  I miss the days when Youtube was just a
place to watch fun or interesting videos without being bombarded by
ads.  The acquisition by Google ruined it.

    Jill
I haven't seen them. I installed it a few months ago and have been
    watching YT videos adfree since.

Thanks! I'll have to uninstall Adblock and give UBlock Origin a try.
I enjoy watching videos on Youtube but the irritation of those notices
about ad blockers violating their TOS and still making me click SKIP
to get past the ads to view something is irritating.

    Jill

If you have an android device, there is a great application called
BravePipe. The app parses the youtube site like a browser would but only displays the relevant content. You can customize how the app looks, turn
on and off the comments, recommendations, etc.

It displays only the raw video, so no ads come along unless it's part
of the video. In which case, you can use a 3rd party API that blocks
those too, but it's more of a crowdsourced service.

You can subscribe to channels that you follow, and it's a list stored on
your device. Youtube doesn't know who you are when using the app. YOu
can't post comments or likes either. It simply displays the content.

You can even download the videos to file, or just the audio, if you want
to keep the content. Some videos simply disappear from the site for one
    reason or another.

I have a superbox connected to my tv. Since it runs android, I installed bravepipe on there as well.

Once I discovered this app, it became a game changer.
