Our local PBS station shows the original Lawrence Welk shows on Saturday night.

Not sure how often, but the Beg-a-thons usually have an old concert or a newer concert with the well aged participants from years ago. The
couple that I have watched I record to FF through the BS parts.
Speaking of old used up performers, Ringo Star. The Beatles used to be
the hottest group around the world. Tonight, Ringo and his band are performing in Clearwater. They mentioned on the 6 o'clock news that
tickets were still available for tonight starting at $53. That would
not have happened years ago.

OMG - even the old folks hate public broadcasting. Well that's that!
The old farts are not into the ticket reselling scams, Ringo Starr was famous for being one of the Beatles but he was never all that popular on
his own. The Beatles were the McCartney-Lennon writing team with a
decent guitarist and a mediocre drummer who had some appeal to teenage
girls.
FWIW I attended a Beatles concert in Toronto in 1965. The experience
turned me off big concerts. I don't feel so bad because their
experience with big concerts turned them off public appearances.

as for LW the older people do watch it, it is still on here
Saturdays at 7pm if they've not decided to do more fund-
raising. at a church Thanksgiving Dinner some years ago a
group of older ladies was in a rush to eat and get back to
where they lived so they could watch LW. Mom and me just
looked at each other and had a hard time not laughing - we've
had a joke between us since then about getting back to watch
it here in time.

Yeah, the last people I remember watching LW in "prime time" was some
very elderly relatives in the late 60's, that demographic has been gone
for 50 years now...
Interestingly, my first "TV memory" is seeing LW one Christmas with the Lennon Sisters, must have been 1955, I was two, lol...
PBS might as well show old Arthur Godfrey or Art Linkletter shows,
they're about as "relevant"...
Scanned some PBS docs on YouTube today, they are all extremely " woke "
and so unwatchable...
One that piqued my interest was about the history of flight attendants,
but 50% of the 90 minutes was focused on the fact that airlines didn't
hire black stewardesses in the '50's...
Yeah, I get it, but I don't need a long - winded history of the whole
civil rights movement added in, mention it in context and MOVE ON...!!!
Tons of great documentaries and such on YouTube, no need for PBS...
Glad that Trump is defunding PBS/NPR, they can sink or swim on their own "merits"...

I imagine they still appeal to an older crowd. Not much of the
programming appeals to me these days, they used to have a lot of travel
and cooking shows.
It was quite a throwback watching Welk, but it is not my choice for
weekly viewing. They show it every Saturday.

I like some of each of those, but also dislike some of each of those.
Some classical is just boring to listen to, while others are really
good. I guess that applies to most genre.
I do remember my mother got a record player when I was about 8 years
old. The one she played the most was Ebb Tide. I still hear it often today and it brings me back to a part of my childhood. I can still visualize the room the record player was in when it plays.
Ebb Tide was written in 1953 but was popularized by the Righteous
Brothers in 1965.

Indeed, we'll have Bach coming out of our ears - more than he could have
ever composed in his short lifetime. Bach is so stylistically
identifiable that it's easy to compose music in his style.
People/computers have been doing it for quite a while. In the future, it >won't matter if a dead guy or a machine composed his music. It'll all be >Bach.

I do remember my mother got a record player when I was about 8 years
old. The one she played the most was Ebb Tide. I still hear it often
today and it brings me back to a part of my childhood. I can still
visualize the room the record player was in when it plays.
Ebb Tide was written in 1953 but was popularized by the Righteous
Brothers in 1965.
I do like listening to the Righteous Brothers. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. Their voices together were dubbed "righteous". ;) Some
younger people only know "Unchained Melody", which was used in the movie 'Ghost'. But they had some really nice songs and beautiful vocal
harmony from a lot of earlier years.

I saw them in Las Vegas some years ago. Good show.
Two years ago when I was in PS visiting Joan she had tickets for an
oldies show so one afternoon we went. It was entertaining but the last
act was the guy that did Unchained Melody. Equal, maybe better than the >Righteous Brothers. Made the whole trip worthwhile.

The book by Somerset Maugham is much better.
Our local PBS station shows the original Lawrence Welk shows on Saturday night. I have one on right now.
Times have changed. If you are trying to decide on a new hair style,
check this out. Same for wardrobe.
The performance in 1979 is nothing like a concert of today. Check it out sometime for a bit of change from today.
I went to a lot of concerts too. I believe The Doors ticket was $2 -
that was way overpriced! I once saw Aerosmith/Rick Derringer. Aerosmith
was okay. Rick Derringer blew me away. It's always a nice surprise when something unexpected like that happens.

I saw Stevie Wonder when he was a kid. I believe he fronted for the
Ventures during that particular, tiny concert. I also saw Bill Haley
play in a bar, long after his heyday. Yes, he sang "Rock Around the
Clock".
I think Ed ought to see Ringo, just because.

The song is from "The Three Penny Opera", staged by Weill in Berlin in
1928. In 1930 an original cast recording was produced, with Lenya
singing the song...
I got it years ago in an East Berlin record shop... it's now on CD, and
it's a stunning document of Weimar - era Germany, and with very good
sound...
When Hitler came to power, it was one of the first " decadent " works he banned... Weill and Lenya had left Germany by that time, but some of
those cast members ended up in concentration camps...
Lenya has a superb "theater" voice, she made a bunch of Weill recordings
for Columbia Masterworks in the 50's, check on Amazon for them...
Ella Fitzgerald made a famous recording of "Mack", too..

Old people will typically bitch about the music of young people. My
guess is that their parents would bitch about their kid's generation and
the kids have carried on this family tradition to the next generation.
Taylor Swift is a good enough singer. The important part is that she
writes most of her songs and she owns the rights to the songs. That's

Hmm, I thought the song was about the guy being away because he was

The simple interpretation is the lasting love when parted for a log
time, regardless or reason.
"Unchained Melody" is a romantic ballad about enduring love and longing, particularly when separated from a loved one. The lyrics express a deep yearning and the feeling that time moves slowly when apart. The song
conveys the idea of love that is strong and unwavering, even through
distance and time
This shows shy it was written.

In 1954, North was asked to compose the score for the prison film movie Unchained. North composed and recorded the score, and then was asked to
write a song based on the movie's theme.
North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics, but Zaret initially declined, saying he was too busy painting his house! Thankfully, he was convinced
to take the job.
Zaret refused the producer’s request to include the word 'unchained' in
his lyrics, and it became known as 'Unchained Melody'.
Instead, Zaret focused on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen
in a "long, lonely time".

I like most music - I'm not into dissing music and artists.
OTOH, I wasn't too fond of the music that my guitar teacher gave me
to practice. It was one-sheet pieces of music that his teacher gave him
back in the 50's in Germany.
His teacher was of great renown in Germany. Siegfried Behrend played a >concert in Honolulu at the invite of my teacher. That guy could whip out
Bach on the guitar in a most uncanny manner. I have never seen anyone
who could match that. He brought out his wife to sing his avant-garde
music. Afterwards, we were invited to hang out with Siegfried but I
wasn't comfortable with social situations so I opted out. Oops, that was
a mistake.
During my lessons, my teacher would chain smoke Marboros as he watched
me with an amused look on his face. He never said a word. After viewing >pictures of Herr Behrend, I suppose that he also taught my teacher his >chain-smoking ways.

Wow! I saw Leo in concert, in an auditorium in Reno, in the Eighties (I think). He was a hell of an entertainer and could whale on a twelve
string guitar. When he was just talking to the audience, he was
spellbinding.
He was the opposite of Gordon Lightfoot, whose audience skills sucked,
but, as we know, whose composing and music were legendary.
At a casino performance, I saw Roy Clark break a string on his guitar
while in the middle of a performance. Every time he was supposed to pick
that particular string, he yelled out "D"!. The audience loved it. :)
By the way, Leo looks way older than I remember on the youtube video. :(

remained good friends with him.She was recently invited to be on the
board for a festival in his honour.

I've never heard of the movie "Ghost", but that's a good song. It

Ed clarified it for you in another post. You're probably not interested

Excellent plot, excellent acting, wonderful musical score by Maurice
Jarre. The movie was suspenseful and scary and sweet all at the same time.
It beats the hell out of the DC comics BS that is being produced these

I blew a chance to meet a world class performer when he was just
starting off in his career. My nephew had been renting a coach house in Toronto when he was starting off in his acting career. When his career
took off he bought the house and rented that coach house to a band. He
told me about this amazing guitarist who was blind and played the guitar
on his lap. Nephew said I could come and watch them practicing. I never
took him up on that offer. About 10 years later I ended up paying to see
him play. It was an outdoor concert on a beautiful summer night. A few months after that I came close to running into him when he was coming
into a well known guitar shop while I was on my way out.
Jeff Healy had lost his eyes to cancer when he was a child. He managed
to build an amazing career in music. Unfortunately the cancer returned
and he died at the age of 41.

I had to check that out and one site was very emphatic that he did not
donate his royalties to the families. However, he has attended memorials
to the crew and made efforts to meet the families and to make it about
the crew, not about him.

Yes, eventually.
He is already on the back side of the mountain. Look carefully.
It is a huge lake. I grew up within walking distance of Lake Ontario and always thought it was huge, but is is tiny compared to Lake Superior. I
have only seen the eastern end of Superior. Man that water is cold. I
was there one year at the end of June. I tried to swim at a friend's
cottage but wading in I barely made it past my ankles.
The drive across
the north side of the lake is said to be beautiful.

It's easy to die when a small boat capsizes on a pond. All you need
is for the boat to hit you in the head hard enough on its way over.

Fascinating! That's the first time I've ever watched 30 minutes of a
youtube video in my life. I didn't realize that I'd already been married
for five years when it sank.
Just for irony, last week, a boat sank during a mini-storm in Lake
Tahoe, and eight of the ten on-board, died. It didn't make sense to me
until I saw that all but one were sixty or older. The owner, who died,
was a DoorDash executive. The excursion was for his mom's birthday.

I spent two weeks at Yellowstone, nearly every summer for fifteen years, as
a yout' (did you catch the Pesci?). Dad thought he lost me to an elk. A
bear faked me out and sent me running. Even in the Fifties and Sixties,
there were wooden walkways around the hot springs and warnings about
stepping off them. But! Nobody told the bison.
By the way, the fumaroles, fissures and hot springs stink unless you like

We shouldn't depend too much on AI for questions we have about life and
to interpret the things that are happening around us. In fact, we need
to somehow limit our exposure to AI generated material.
We now live in a world where a firm grip on reality is no longer
possible. AI is now able to manipulate sounds and images. Our society no >longer has restrictions on presenting falsehoods and using AI to
gaslight us. AI also has the ability to present an altered reality
without any human intervention/direction. We're probably screwed.

I don't treat ChatGPT like a shrink or friend or guru :) But it's
great for factual stuff because you can ask follow-up questions etc. I
don't think I'll get ChatGPT psychosis. I'd like an AI participant to
RFC. See if it could join the Sisterhood.

Nah, It would be like her Majesty on steroids.
Why do so many people hare Taylor Swift.
Ed clarified it for you in another post. You're probably not interested
in the movie 'Ghost' but I have to say it was a really good film.
Excellent plot, excellent acting, wonderful musical score by Maurice
Jarre. The movie was suspenseful and scary and sweet all at the same time.

Enjoyed it in the past. Wouldn't watch it if it came out today, because
of Whoopie Goldberg and her politics. She doesn't need any money or
suport from me.
