One news article on the subject said that Americans are turning
away from canned food because it has preservatives in it. That
might be true of Spaghettios, but not canned vegetables.
I don't eat canned green beans because they come out of the
can already overcooked.

That's your problem right there. Nobody likes boomer green beans these
days. Quit polluting our shelves with those disgusting cans. Sell can
corn instead. Mexican Elote and Korean Corn Cheese. The young millennial
mom will buy as much of that corn that they can stuff in a shopping
cart. It's a wonderful life.

So Del Monte wasn't staying abreast of what the kids wanted!

Exactly. Fresh is more readily available now and frozen is superior to canned also.
Del Monte had the market and should have transitioned to frozen.

That probably counts as a fruit in the school lunch program. :(

Just as Sears could have been Amazon but did not see the future.

Canned green beans are terrible. Until I was 20, that's the only way I
had them, so I usually avoided green beans. What a treat, the first
time I pan-roasted fresh tender-crisp green beans with diced garlic.

I suspect the people who are buying canned goods are primarily going for
the cheap store brands.

Nobody knows what the kids will be eating in the future. My guess is
that they won't want any vegetables of any kind. Mostly, they like
French fries and macaroni and cheese.
I'm not a fan of green beans but they're not too bad if you treat them
nice. They're about a couple of feet long and very easy to prepare. I
think they're Chinese or Filipino green beans.

But they may grow out of that. I was more thinking of kids in their
30s and 40s, in the way you refer to them.

I know them as snake beans. I've grown them for a few seasons. They
were good, grew well and taste very much like common green beans.

Most of the cheap store brands come out of the same (name brand)
production plants. They simply slap a different label on them.

That's clearly ground pork. Peanut brittle is flatter.
