With Blocknews on Win 7, half of my posts would never show up.

    Those were the days.

That's odd, I'm still using Win 7 and Blocknews without issue. Good
luck with Windows 10, I gave it 5 minutes of my time, and decided that
once W7 is beyond depreciated, so is Microsoft. I'll have to learn
    Linux then, I guess.

But all those operating systems work. They may need a tweak here or
there for a particular user, but they can all be customised to how you
want them. The days that your entire computer would freeze if you look
at it the wrong way, are over.

Of course, don't buy a 20 year old computer and then install the
    newest operating system on it.

    Which linux distros?

I don't remember. It's a long time ago. I hoped it would be faster
than Windows on an old computer I had, but in graphical mode it was
just as slow. The computer was just too old.

And have you used a google chrome OS system? How
    about amazon kindle stuff?

No, I'm talking about desktop computers.

That's OK, you're doing fine. I assume you've no experience with large >mainframe systems. Mostly windows on a 64 bit desktop, right?

    As I said, desktop.

    You passed the test.

With Blocknews on Win 7, half of my posts would never show up.

    --Bryan

That's odd, I'm still using Win 7 and Blocknews without issue.

    The user was the problem.

Good luck with Windows 10, I gave it 5 minutes of my time, and decided that
once W7 is beyond depreciated, so is Microsoft. I'll have to learn
    Linux then, I guess.

All those operating systems, Windows XX, Linux, Mac, work well. If
    there's a problem, it's the user.

Sounds like a pretty big blanket statement to me. Maybe yoose been
hanging around with Uncle Tojo too long?

But all those operating systems work. They may need a tweak here or
there for a particular user, but they can all be customised to how you
want them. The days that your entire computer would freeze if you look
at it the wrong way, are over.

Of course, don't buy a 20 year old computer and then install the
    newest operating system on it.

Have you really used all those operating systems? Do you still use all
those operating systems? Are you proficient in all those operating systems?

I use Linux and iOS on a daily basis. Windows 10 or 11 occasionally.

Back in prehistory, I used VAX/VMS (which was like speaking in Klingon).

For the end user, the differences among the Unix-derived OSs are
small. Most normal people use a windowing system. For us command-line
users there are several interfaces (shells), each of which has its
adherents. I'd have to think hard to count how many Unix-derived
OSs I've used. Maybe 10, including a brief flirtation with IRIX
    from Silicon Graphics.

    Ah, good times.

The Falcon was conceived under the reign of Robert McNamara, that

OTOH, my mom's 84 Mustang LX was a wonderful ride. The interior was nice

trick - it was actually a hatchback.

Any of us could. Being older just puts us into the age range where
people are more likely to die from some age related issue. Many of us
meet our doom much earlier. I lost two very good friends when I was 15,
one in a motorcycle accident and the other in a car accident. A friend's husband died at the age of 26 from a aortic embolism. I had an aunt who
who died of a cerebral embolism in her mid 40s and we lost a niece 5
years ago to a heart attack. That one caught us all off guard because
she had been so fit and had so much going for herself. She had been out
walking with her husband and they 13 year old son, went upstairs for to
go to the bathroom and dropped dead.

The fact is that there are a lot of old people around these days that
will last longer than some who have not yet been born.

Any of us could. Being older just puts us into the age range where
people are more likely to die from some age related issue. Many of us
meet our doom much earlier. I lost two very good friends when I was 15,

I understand how this life and death stuff works. I've already lived a
decade more than my mom. I consider that time to be icing on the cake. Therefore, we should be enjoying whatever time we have left and not
waste it by doing/saying stupid stuff.

    You passed the test.

With Blocknews on Win 7, half of my posts would never show up.

    --Bryan

That's odd, I'm still using Win 7 and Blocknews without issue. Good
luck with Windows 10, I gave it 5 minutes of my time, and decided that
once W7 is beyond depreciated, so is Microsoft. I'll have to learn
    Linux then, I guess.

On Linux there's three clients I've used. Pan seems easiest all-around, Thunderbird works as alternative graphical one, and finally there's tin if
you want a command-line usenet client.

I'm using a phone client, Newstap, on the iphone to post this.

Yes, you emailed me, Michael, thanks. I was not admitted to the

I was in the Emergency Room for 5 hours. It was not a "hospital stay".
It's nice of everyone to be concerned, though, thank you! I thought I

Yes, you emailed me, Michael, thanks.  I was not admitted to the
hospital.  I went to the ER and spent about 5 hours there getting IV antibiotics and a CT scan to confirm gut inflammation due to diverticulitis.  I took the week off from work, taking oral antibiotics
and resting.  Nothing interesting to report about food or cooking.

Good to see you back Jill. Hope you are fully recovered soon.

I just had a phone call from my SiL who sends regrets for being unable
to attend my wife's birthday bash. It's a big one.... 80. We had
reserved enough room for her family at a very nice brunch buffet at a
nice Toronto restaurant. SiL suffers from ulcerative colitis and it
is really acting up. She is also suffering from light headedness.

My wife is bummed that her big sister won't be able to make it and was
tempted to cancel. Others are coming a long way for it, including a
nephew and his wife who are leaving in a few weeks for a 3 year
deployment to Singapore. The down side is the the big niece will be
there. At least it is a buffet for at least one of use will be getting
    our money's worth.

I'd say go ahead with the festivities as it's already

is leaving the country for probably a good while.
Looking forward to hearing of big niece's gobble feast.

It's a shame. There is a lot of family history there. Her grandparents
courted there. My wife's family dined there almost every Sunday for
years. My nephew's wedding rehearsal party was held there as was BiL's

Dave, why not take her on a ride on your motorcycle. Ladies like
special attention like that. Could be the last thrill the old lady will experience. Just go slow around some local familiar roads. Maybe give
her a hug afterwards. This won't damage your macho policeman image at rfc.

Some of us would respect you more in fact.

There's a "law" firm near me. Run by an old guy and his two children. A
boy and a girl. For many many years, these kids weighed about 400 lbs.
    HUGE.

Suddenly, they shrank to nothing. Almost overnight they became super

She then parked herself next to the table that had been used to sign the registry and when the kid who works for the club came to remove the

She had a great time at the reception.  She installed herself by the top
of the stairs so that every time a server came up with a new tray of
hors d'oveuvres she would take several.  At one point I was talking to a friend and out of the corner of my eye I see an arm reach across the
table into someone's glass and she took the cherries that garnished his Manhattan.  I don't remember if it was before or after dinner while we
were seated she went over to the bar with a glass. There was a small

kind of funny because the bartender saw it and gave her a really dirty
look and then went over and took the bowl away.

When I mentioned these things to my wife she said I should not spend
all my time  watching for here to mess up.  I was not watching. These
were all things that just sort of happened and I caught them by mistake.
Who knows what else she pulled off.

I have to have a talk with our server(s) at this lunch. It is a buffet
but past experience is that she will abuse them having them run back and forth to cater to her whims. It happened once at another lunch buffet at
one of FiL's clubs. He had the poor guy running back in forth. He had
brought coffee but she wanted tea. There was cream on the table but she wanted milk. He brought a picture of milk and then she wanted a glass of milk. He brought the milk and then she wanted a glass of juice.  He came with the juice and then she wanted a glass of ginger ale. I never saw
him again. He had the good sense to get away, but then we were stuck
    without a server.

Thanks. It is a multi day celebration for her. My brother's wife took
her out for lunch yesterday and her walking group is taking her for
lunch tomorrow. Then the family thing in Toronto on Saturday.

I will try not to babysit the niece but I am certain things will happen
    that I cannot miss.

Could be worth the drive to Canada just to watch her in action.
    Incredible.

LOL. It is sort of like the comment about lawyer jokes..... they aren't

I have been doing well at avoiding her. I have only had to deal with

hors d'oveuvres she would take several. At one point I was talking to a
friend and out of the corner of my eye I see an arm reach across the
table into someone's glass and she took the cherries that garnished his Manhattan. I don't remember if it was before or after dinner while we
were seated she went over to the bar with a glass. There was a small
bowl of olives and she dumped most of them into her empty glass. It was
kind of funny because the bartender saw it and gave her a really dirty
look and then went over and took the bowl away.

When I mentioned these things to my wife she said I should not spend
all my time watching for here to mess up. I was not watching. These
were all things that just sort of happened and I caught them by mistake.
Who knows what else she pulled off.

I have to have a talk with our server(s) at this lunch. It is a buffet
but past experience is that she will abuse them having them run back and
forth to cater to her whims. It happened once at another lunch buffet at
one of FiL's clubs. He had the poor guy running back in forth. He had
brought coffee but she wanted tea. There was cream on the table but she
wanted milk. He brought a picture of milk and then she wanted a glass of
milk. He brought the milk and then she wanted a glass of juice. He came
with the juice and then she wanted a glass of ginger ale. I never saw

Meantime, Happy Birthday to the wife.

Her Royal Majesty of course. You don't recognize her because that is an

Yes, you emailed me, Michael, thanks.  I was not admitted to the
hospital.  I went to the ER and spent about 5 hours there getting IV
antibiotics and a CT scan to confirm gut inflammation due to
diverticulitis.  I took the week off from work, taking oral

Good to see you back Jill. Hope you are fully recovered soon.

I'll be fine, thank you Dave. :)

    That sucks.

My wife is bummed that her big sister won't be able to make it and was tempted to cancel. Others are coming a long way for it, including a
nephew and his wife who are leaving in a few weeks for a 3 year
deployment to Singapore.  The down side is the the big niece will be there.  At least it is a buffet for at least one of use will be getting
    our money's worth.

Oh no, another Big Niece story in the making! Happy early birthday to
    your wife. :)

Sorry to disappoint, but she was relatively well behaved this time.
There is no doubt she packed away a lot of food, but it was a buffet so
it was not costing me any extra. I did pull a prudent move my telling
the gang that lunch was on me but if they wanted drinks they would be responsible for their bar bills. However, I ended up picking up the bar
tabs and since they expected to have to pay for the drinks they didn't
    drink much.
