From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Tue Feb 14 08:25:13 2023
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-01-20,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Cellar Rats, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct
    answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2022-09-09
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
    Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

    * Game 2, Round 1 - Current Events (excerpt)

Answer these 2014 questions if you like for fun, but for no points.

    1. Villagers in northern India were afraid to leave home due to
    what threat?

    2. Who received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors
    Guild awards?

    * Game 2, Round 2 - History - Famous Fires

In each case we give you a year, and usually some other details or
a cryptic hint, and you tell us where the major fire we're talking
    about took place.

For #1-8, just name the city.

    1. 587 BC, burned by Nebuchadnezzar.
    2. 64, used as justification to persecute Christians.
    3. 1666.
    4. 1849, Post's Tavern.
    8. February 13-15, 1945, a central event in the book "Slaughterhouse
    Five".
    5. 1871, cow.
    6. 1917, Mont Blanc.
    7. 1923, Asia, after a devastating earthquake.

For #9-10, name the specific building.

    9. 1613, London.
    10. 1911, New York.

    * Game 2, Round 3 - Sports - Highlights of 2013

    Ten different sports, no hockey.

    1. Brazil's national soccer team reestablished themselves
as favorites in the 2014 World Cup by winning the 2013
Confederations Cup. What nation, undefeated in 29 games
over 3 years, did they beat 3-0 in the final?

    2. At the 34th America's Cup, the American defenders won 8 straight
races for a come-from-behind victory. Their team carried
the name of what Silicon Valley corporation, founded by their
    billionaire sponsor?

    3. Chinese golfer Guan Tianlang made history when he made the cut
    at the Masters. Why?

    4. Although no overtime was required for Baltimore to beat San
Francisco, the 47th Super Bowl """was""" the longest in history
at 4 hours 14 minutes. Why?

For the remaining questions, name the athlete. As usual, the
    surname will do.

    5. This female South Korean figure skater trained with Brian Orser
in Toronto for several years. After winning gold at the 2010
Olympics, she took some time off, returning to win the 2013
World Figure Skating Championships in March in London, Ontario.

    6. This Slovenian woman dominated Alpine skiing in 2013, especially
in the Giant Slalom and Super-G. She had 11 victories and a
record number of World Cup points -- 2,414, also a record 1,313
    ahead of her closest rival.

    7. This Red Sox player made an inspiring, if profane, speech to the
Fenway crowd after the Boston Marathon bombings. In the American
League Championship series, his game-tying grand slam led to a
Boston win. In the World Series he batted .688 and was chosen
the Most Valuable Player of the Series.

    8. This Miami Heat player won his 4th regular-season Most Valuable
Player award. He followed with a 37-point performance in Game 7
of the finals, earning his second straight finals MVP award.

    9. This Formula 1 driver finished the 2013 season with a record
13 wins and 397 points to win his 4th straight world
    championship.

    10. This Scottish tennis player became the first British citizen
to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon in 77 years.

Answer these 2014 questions if you like for fun, but for no points.

    1. Villagers in northern India were afraid to leave home due to
    what threat?

    Man-eating tigers. Erland got this.

    2. Who received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors
    Guild awards?

    Rita Moreno.

    * Game 2, Round 2 - History - Famous Fires

In each case we give you a year, and usually some other details or
a cryptic hint, and you tell us where the major fire we're talking
    about took place.

For #1-8, just name the city.

    1. 587 BC, burned by Nebuchadnezzar.

Jerusalem. 4 for Erland, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

    2. 64, used as justification to persecute Christians.

Rome. 4 for everyone -- Erland, Dan Blum, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

    3. 1666.

    London. 4 for everyone.

    4. 1849, Post's Tavern.

Toronto. (The city's first Great Fire, preceding the better-known
one of 1904.) 4 for Dan Tilque.

    8. February 13-15, 1945, a central event in the book "Slaughterhouse
    Five".

    Dresden. 4 for everyone.

Sorry about the question sequence there. I meant to sort them in
order by date, but botched the special case of this one that didn't
begin with the year. I'm still not sure why it ended up between #4
    and #5.

    5. 1871, cow.

Chicago. 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

The cryptic hint in this case was about a popular belief, not a fact.

    6. 1917, Mont Blanc.

Halifax. "Mont Blanc" was the ship whose load of munitions exploded.

    7. 1923, Asia, after a devastating earthquake.

    Tokyo. 4 for Erland.

For #9-10, name the specific building.

    9. 1613, London.

    Globe Theatre. 4 for Joshua.

    10. 1911, New York.

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. 4 for Joshua and Dan Tilque.

    * Game 2, Round 3 - Sports - Highlights of 2013

    Ten different sports, no hockey.

as favorites in the 2014 World Cup by winning the 2013
Confederations Cup. What nation, undefeated in 29 games
over 3 years, did they beat 3-0 in the final?

    Spain.

    2. At the 34th America's Cup, the American defenders won 8 straight
races for a come-from-behind victory. Their team carried
the name of what Silicon Valley corporation, founded by their
    billionaire sponsor?

    Oracle. 4 for everyone.

    3. Chinese golfer Guan Tianlang made history when he made the cut
    at the Masters. Why?

His youth. Specifically, at 14, he became the youngest player to
make the cut in PGA Tour history; but that level of detail wasn't
required. In addition, as far as I can tell he was the first-ever
player from China to make the cut, so I'm also accepting that answer.
    4 for Erland and Joshua.

    4. Although no overtime was required for Baltimore to beat San
Francisco, the 47th Super Bowl """was""" the longest in history
at 4 hours 14 minutes. Why?

Play was suspended for 34 minutes while the field was darkened by a
failure in the stadium's lighting power. Any general reference to
this was sufficient. 4 for Joshua.

    It's still the longest ever.

For the remaining questions, name the athlete. As usual, the
    surname will do.

    5. This female South Korean figure skater trained with Brian Orser
in Toronto for several years. After winning gold at the 2010

    9. This Formula 1 driver finished the 2013 season with a record
13 wins and 397 points to win his 4th straight world
    championship.

    Sebastian Vettel.

    10. This Scottish tennis player became the first British citizen
