• QFTCISG24 Game 3, Rounds 4,6: prison writers, Americas extremes

From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Mon Oct 14 05:21:30 2024
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-05-27,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Smith & Guessin' and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 3, Round 4 - Literature - Prison Writers

As the questions will state, some of these writers wrote these
works in prison, while others put their experiences to paper after
serving their time. In each case, name the author.

    1. This Spanish author drew inspiration for his most famous novel
from the 5 years he was held as a slave by pirates from 1575
to 1580. He began work on that book years later, while serving
prison time for embezzling state funds. Name the writer.

    2. Which English statesman, soldier, and explorer wrote his "History
of the World, Volume 1" while imprisoned in the Tower of London
    from 1603 to 1612?

    3. This British author and ex-politician was in prison from 2001
to 2003. He was convicted of perverting the course ofjustice over
a libel case around allegations he had sex with a prostitute.
While behind bars, he wrote a 3-volume memoir called "A Prison
Diary", with volumes fashioned after Dante's "Divine Comedy".

    4. American author William Sidney Porter wrote 14 stories while in
prison for embezzlement between 1898 and 1901. For this question
    we need his *pen name*.

    5. This Russian author spent 4 years of hard labor in a Siberian
prison camp, from 1849 to 1853. His book "The House of the Dead"
was among the first to tell Russians about life in a labor camp.
    Name him.

    6. Which famous prisoner wrote an open letter entitled "Letter
from Birmingham Jail" from his cell in 1963?

    7. Who wrote "Long Walk to Freedom", about his 28 years in a South
    African prison?

    8. This French nobleman and writer, who died in 1814, is best
known for his graphic novels -- and for his imprisonment for
sex crimes, blasphemy, and pornography. His works included
"The 120 Days of Sodom". He wrote in prison in tiny handwriting
to avoid attracting attention by using too much paper.

    9. This boxer was wrongfully convicted of a 1966 triple murder
and served nearly 20 years. His book "The Sixteenth Round"
was written in prison and published in 1974. The story inspired
a Bob Dylan song and a Norman Jewison film.

    10. This American author served 13 months in 2004 and 2005 for
money-laundering. Her 2010 memoir of her prison experiences,
"Orange is the New Black", became a popular Netflix series.

    * Game 3, Round 6 - Geography - Americas Extremes

    2. Which one is the easternmost?
    3. Which one is the northernmost?

residents (in the city proper, *not* the metropolitan area)
    according to the 2020 census.

Somewhat to my surprise, there are only 10 of them:

    1. New York, NY 8,804,190
    2. Los Angeles, CA 3,898,747
    3. Chicago, IL 2,746,388
    4. Houston, TX 2,304,580
    5. Phoenix, AZ 1,608,139
    6. Philadelphia, PA 1,603,797
    7. San Antonio, TX 1,434,625
    8. San Diego, CA 1,386,932
    9. Dallas, TX 1,304,379
    10. San Jose, CA 1,013,240

The ones not on that list that were tried as answers are:

    17. San Francisco, CA 873,965
    18. Seattle, WA 737,015
    24. Boston, MA 675,647
    27. Detroit, MI 639,111
    43. Miami, FL 442,241
    45. Minneapolis, MN 429,954
    55. Honolulu, HI 350,964

    1. Which one is the westernmost?

San Jose. 4 for Dan Tilque and Joshua.

    2. Which one is the easternmost?

New York. 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, and Joshua. 3 for Pete.

    3. Which one is the northernmost?

Chicago. 4 for Dan Blum and Joshua.

    4. And which one is the southernmost?

San Antonio. 4 for Dan Tilque and Erland. 3 for Joshua.

    5. In which US state would you find the northernmost point in the
    "lower 48" (contiguous) states?

Minnesota. (Northwest Angle Inlet in Lake of the Woods.)
4 for Dan Tilque, Erland, Dan Blum, and Joshua.

If you thought it was Maine, you've probably been deluded by using
maps with a conic or similar projection; the Mercator projection,
although justifiably much derided, is much better for this. See:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/llraqn/exploring_map_projections_for_the_contiguous_us/

    6. The northernmost point in Canada is Cape Columbia, on *what
    island* in Nunavut?

Ellesmere I. 4 for Dan Tilque, Erland, and Pete.

    7. The southernmost point in Canada is Middle Island, located in
    *which of the Great Lakes*?

    L. Erie. 4 for Dan Tilque, Dan Blum, Joshua, and Pete.

    8. Which place in Newfoundland is the easternmost point in Canada?

    Cape Spear.

    9. In which *country* would you find Cape Froward, the southernmost
point on the South American mainland?

Chile. 4 for Dan Tilque and Erland. 3 for Joshua. 2 for Dan Blum.

"Froward" is an old-fashioned word meaning "stubbornly contrary and disobedient", and was applied to the cape in reference to its climate.

    10. The northernmost point on the South American mainland is Punta
    Gallinas, in which country?

Colombia. 4 for Dan Tilque, Joshua, and Pete.

I have an embarrassing confession to make here. Birmingham? 1963? Hm,
could that be any of the persons involved the Great Train Robbery?

That's what I get for being eurocentric. Yes, I have heard of a
Birmingham in the US as well.

Most of the criminals in that case were still at large by the end
of 1963, although eventually they all were arrested. I don't know
what prisons they all were sentenced to. Of the two that escaped
afterwards, Ronald Biggs was in Wandsworth Prison in London -- he
settled in Brazil and had a child there, thus avoiding extradition
until he voluntarily returned to Britain and prison in 2001. But the
other one, Charles Wilson, was in Winton Green Prison, which is indeed
near Birmingham, England. He escaped in 1964, settled in Canada in
1966, but was arrested here in 1968 and this time sent to Parkhurst
Prison on the Isle of Wight, England.

There are a bunch of them, although only one is of any size.
