• QFTCISG24 Game 6, Rounds 2-3: PM names, plant families

From Mark Brader@21:1/5 to All on Sat Nov 30 02:49:02 2024
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-06-17,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Smith & Guessin', and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 6, Round 2 - Canadiana - Name the PM

A season or two ago, we were asked to identify US presidents
from their middle names. Tonight, it's the turn of Canadian
prime ministers. You'll be given their first or middle names
and asked to identify our fearless leaders using he by giving the
*first and last names* they are/were commonly known by. When we
give you a first name in the question, they're actually known by
    one of their middle names.

    1. First name: Martin.
    2. First name: Charles.
    3. Middle name: Joseph.
    4. First two names: Henri Charles.
    5. First two names: Joseph Jacques.
    6. Middle name: Napier.
    7. Middle name: George.
    8. Middle name: Alexander.
    9. Second and third names: Pierre James.
    10. Middle name: Bowles.

    * Game 6, Round 3 - Science - Plant Family Relations

Families contain all sorts. But in this case, we're looking at
odd cousins -- edible or medicinal plants that belong to the same
taxonomic family as ones you might not suspect. In each case,
name the plant or group of plants described.

    1. Convolvulaceae ["CON-vo-vull-eh-see-aye"] is more commonly known
as the morning glory family. What is the common name of
the edible tuber from this family that's found in a variety
    of colors?

    2. Amaryllidaceae ["AM-ah-rill-ih-day-see-aye"] is theamaryllis
family, which also includes daffodils and snowdrops. This family
includes some of the most common aromatic ingredients used
worldwide. Name the genus, or any common member used in cooking.

    3. The Apiaceae ["EH-pee-eh-see-aye"] family includes toxic plants
like giant hogweed and hemlock. But it also includes many
edible herbs and other plants, including these colorful roots.

    4. Rosaceae ["ROSE-eh-see-aye"] is the family of roses. But it
also contains many of our most common fruits, including apples,
peaches, and strawberries. Another rose family member is this
hard, astringent fruit, usually used to make jam, marmalade,
    and alcoholic beverages.

    5. Rubiaceae ["ROO-bee-eh-see-aye"] is the family of gardenias,as
well as coffee. Another family member is the genus Cinchona
["S IN-kona"] . Name the antimalarial medicine extractedfrom
    several Cinchona species.

    6. The black locust tree, whose wood is prized for being
both extremely hard and rot resistant, is part of the Fabaceae
["FAH-bah-see-aye"] family. This family includes a group of
edible plants that form staple foods for civilizations around
    the world. Name this group.

    7. Solanaceae ["SO-lan-eh-see-aye"] is the family of nightshades.
Potatoes are one such edible plant introduced from the Americas.
But another New World nightshade has become commonplace globally.
It has even sparked a local festival where tons of these are
    used in a food fight.

    8. Orchidaceae ["OAR-kid-eh-see-aye"] is the family of orchids.
What spice is actually the seed pod of an orchid?

    9. Asteraceae ["ASS-ter-eh-see-aye"] is the family of thistles
(including artichokes) and daisies. The tuberous root of
a plant in this family is sometimes called an earth apple.
But what is this edible tuber more commonly known as?

    10. Bromeliaceae ["BRO-mell-ee-eh-see-aye"], or the bromeliads,
are a family of plants that include epiphytes (plants that grow
on other plants) like Spanish moss, and also terrestrial plants.
This sweet fruit family member is native to South America, and
became a symbol of luxury when it was introduced to Europe in
    the 17th century.
