• FIDE considering change =?UTF-8?B?PyA=?=

From Silver Skull@21:1/5 to All on Wed Sep 25 16:46:37 2024
    Well, well, well.

A Norwegian GM reckons FIDE are considering a format change for the 2025
FIDE World Cup and the top 100 players have been asked for their
    opinions.

I wonder what could have prompted such a revolutionary idea, like asking
the players what they want ? And is this a sign for the future ?

I wonder if the views of another Norwegian GM have had any influence on
    this ?

What is the format change? Is it anything revolutionary?

Judging by the comments in the video it's only a proposed format
change, which the players have been asked their opinion on.

It's certainly NOT the first time 'asking the players what they want'
has been done. Certainly the tournament book for the 1948 World
Championship match / tournament reports (editted by Keres) that the
format was devised by FIDE with input on the format from those GMs who
had survived WW2. (Incidentally I recently purchased the hardcover
version of the FIDE reprint of that book and consider it superb)

Fine was originally invited but declined since while he had finished
medical school, he still had to do his psychiatric residency and the
dates conflicted so he declined his W/C nomination (which I'd argue
was far better for his career than risking not getting another
psychiatric residency later on. Once he finished his residency he
continued to do chess books but his tournament activity dropped almost
    to nothing.

Still, of Fine's books the ones that have best survived the test of
time (I'd argue "Ideas Behind the Chess Openings" is still worth
reading if a bit dated) were the ones written after his retirement
    from active play.
