ESPN are not impressed with currently ongoing world championship games.

They ask; "is it time to tweak the format ?" I think so.

Apart from hardcore classical chess fans, who probably lap-up 4 hour
games that earn half a point, these games are not very entertaining to
watch for the masses. Chess is supposedly more popular than ever, i
can't see the younger generation wanting too much of this tho.

No wonder Magnus got bored of it all.

Several hour long chess games I also find boring to watch on TV. I think a
nice sweet spot for me would be a hard limit of 45 to 60 minutes for one
    game.

I also would like to return chess to the gentlemanly era and see the competition enforce dress codes, so that the players wear beautiful manly business suits, or formal attire.

I would also like for them to compete in beautiful venues and not sit in
glass cages. Why not have this type of competition here:

    This I would watch!

True. We here at rgcm are working hard on the format for the
next championship to make it more exciting! ;)

I could be harsh and say that if you want excitement go to the
    cinema...

Chess at the WCC level between super GM's will always have an
element of "boring" as they are playing at a level where there
will be an element of cancelling each other out, as well as a
    fear of losing.

However, if you are going to be called the World Chess Champion
then I think you should be the best at the main time control
formats, so in 2024 a WCC should include some elements of
'blitz' and 'rapid' within the format.

I think that while the core, chess itself, should not be changed, in the
spirit of fun and excitement, the surrounding format should be changed. On
the other hand, it is a very simple question at the end of the day.

Are the nr of viewers rising, falling or is it remaining flat? Depending
on that, the answer should be pretty obvious. =)

I've watched most of the Youtube game episodes (including last night's
up to about move 25 then viewed the rest this morning - I watch one of
the early games straight through but Singapore is 9 hrs off Pacific
time and 12 hrs off Eastern time and even though I'm now retired,
watching 5 hours of chess isn't on when the game starts at 1am Pacific
    time)

Mind you I've followed (in print) pretty much all the matches from Petrosian-Spassky 1969 forward. (That was when I was a smart-ass
junior who still dreamed at that time of reaching those heights.
Didn't reach them of course but two years later I did meet Spassky)

But even if you are not the best, you must still be very good! Where are
you on the lichess stockfish level scale? Can you consistently beat level
    7?

Five hour chess games are a tough watch. Moreso with the time difference involved. I prefer to watch three or four different re-caps from the
various youtubers to get a full analysis and different points of view
from these games as opposed to sitting through a whole game live. The
15+10 tie-break games are something i could tolerate - should it get
    that far.

Yes, same here. One recap is enough. I think 30-45 minutes per person is a
    nice sweet spot.
