• WCC 2024 - Game 14 - Winner Takes All =?UTF-8?B?Pw==?=

From Silver Skull@21:1/5 to All on Wed Dec 11 15:50:03 2024
After Game 13 ended in a draw today, Ding and Gukesh are level on 6.5
points each meaning we will have the final classical game tomorrow to
decide this world chess championship. Game 14 of 14!

Ding has a slight edge because he has white. But at this level of chess
    - and based on what we have seen so far, anything can happen.

Will it be the winner takes it all tomorrow or do we move on to the
    tie-break format ?

As for tie-break, I've heard they have to fight to the death with the

Ding Liren has actually surprised me. He has played some really
good chess in this match. Maybe he has lacked a bit of ambition
at times, but the standard of his play has been of very high
quality. After the Olympiad I had written Ding off as Gukesh D
was on fire, so Gukesh was my favourite for the 2024 title.

Even today, after thirteen games, we are no closer to knowing
who will take the 2024 World Chess Championship crown.

As for tie-break, I've heard they have to fight to the death

I'd say the same about Gukesh in game 13.

I'm no super-GM by any means but I'm certain I could have won that
rook ending - even at speed chess controls. It's just not an
    extraordinarily difficult ending.

I even went so far as saying "Holy She-ittttt!" when Gukesh got down
    to the winning positions.

Wow! Though to be sure I had fallen off the Dommaraju bandwagon after
the way he f'd up the rook and pawn endgame in game 13.

I have just finished watching game 14 on Youtube and I am amazed at
    the finish.

I well remember how I felt the night my wife died and the ambulance
had left with her (bound for the coroner's office the next morning).

Now obviously Gukesh's mood was totally different but I noted how he
slowly and carefully set up the pieces again. It reminded me so much
of the way I spent the rest of that particular evening (which I have
since referred to amongst friends as 'the worst night of my life') and realizing that in such completely different circumstances Gukesh was
doing the very same 'repeating familiar actions'.

While I prefer the end we got to a day's worth of speed chess for the
world championship I know I will never forget that finish.

They'll surely meet in some classical matches in 2025 but I
don't think Magnus will return to play for a world title... not
    under its current format anyway.

The Indian's are on their way so it's possible Magnus Carlsen's

Gukesh breathing down his neck at the top of the FIDE rankings

Yes, speed chess to 'decide' a world championship title isn't
    ideal.

Although long-term I do think that FIDE will need to tamper with
the world title format at some stage... but that's a discussion

How many bishops will go to corner squares in master play during the
next 2-3 years? Precious few I'd bet :) Had that bishop been on b7
instead of a8 it's probably a draw. Obviously once the bishops and
rooks come off it's a fairly easy pawn ending which is why Ding
    resigned.

youngsters coming up through the ranks.

I guess it will depend on motivation, coupled with aging. On the other
hand, although it is not a good comparison, Lasker was quite a long
    reigning ninja!

True! And he is getting old. Soon he will be
    handicaped by time.

Poor Magnus Carlsen - 34 years old and he's being written
    off already. !!

It's modern elite sports and a biological fact. Same for
    everyone.

I wouldn't call chess a modern elite sport!

Why not? If I look at documentaries about what it takes to
prepare for a world championship, mentally and physically, I
would definitely see it that way.

    Enlighten me!

It's the "modern" bit I'd have a problem with... as chess is
    anything but!

Which for a sport that wants to grow and capitalise on the
growth in the game at the non-elite levels is its biggest
problem. (FIDE wouldn't really be considered a progressive
    organisation either!)

Ahhh.. ok, got it. Yes, I agree with you. We've offered plenty of
suggestions. I am sure FIDE are lurking around here, so wouldn't be
surprised if they do make some changes soon giving some credit to "Blue".

Nor would I. I wouldn't call it any kind of sport.

Although I do think Magnus Carlsen's days at #1 in the world are
numbered.. if he's not knocked off the top in 2025, then I'm
sure it won't be too long afterwards. There's a lot of talented
youngsters coming up through the ranks.

Right, nobody stays at the top forever.

The term e-sport is used by the pros for the competitions featuring
speed chess variants, which I think is fair enough.

It was announced last week that chess is going to be part of the
"E-sports World Cup" in 2025 which is the first time the game has been featured. Hopefully it proves a popular attraction.

Wow! Fide are being threatened! I think Magnus will probably move in, and maybe, this format will take over.

I can live with e-sport for the sake of the peace of the group. ;)

Merry christmas dear, fellow chess enthusiasts!

I must now abort my breakfast early in order to make myself beautiful for
    the celebrations!

in and money will take over!

Online chess as an eSport is fine with me... as that's basically
    what it is.
