Insurance lets me see the optometrist once a year. This year along
with a slightly new prescription (aging eyes) I wanted to look into
getting another pair of goggles made. My last ones were done in 1999
and were big bugeyed goggles (I think they were called "Bugz") with a >prescription insert. The outside lenses had gotten scarred up and
they didn't make replacements anymore.
We settled on a brand, and I asked them to try something different
this time -- do them as bifocals. They said they had never done that
before, but were willing to give it a try.
And man, did they deliver. The goggles are polarized, and have my
long distance prescription at the top of the lens and my reading
prescription at the bottom. I had to train myself not to tip my head,
but I can look up and see the road and look down and read the gauges.
The first real test was the long trip over Memorial day weekend and
the week following, and they worked extremely well. Kept the wind out
of my eyes (I have a shorty windshield on the Ultra) and at no point
was I tempted to take them off while riding in order to bring
something into focus. I called the optometrist's office to tell them
they had a real winner. They said they'd recommend to other bikers in
the same situation.
