• That Exhaust Gas smell

From sticks@21:1/5 to All on Tue Aug 13 18:57:15 2024
Hope everyone is well. Have a drink on me and if I may I'd like to ask
a silly question. Every Harley rider probably knows the smell I'm
talking about, but I find it hard to explain. I got about 80K on this
one and it's always had a little bit of the smell when I park it in the
garage. Yes, the clothes get it on and go in the wash after riding.
Never bothered me, and I always figured it is normal.

What gets me wondering now a bit is that the smell seems to be getting stronger. I can notice it more when I ride. Sunday I put 400 miles on
and noticed it several times during the day. When I parked it in the
garage, it was strong. I can still smell it a couple days later in
there, and that is different. It would always go away and be almost unnoticeable. I actually unplugged the damn slow charger yesterday out
of caution because it was so strong.

If you know the smell I'm talking about, any guesses on why it is
increasing would be very helpful. I might ride a little easier than I
used to since I mostly have a passenger now, but I don't ride slow. It
gets serviced regular, and is inside the window. I thought maybe a leak
in the muffler, but I would think that would go away like it used to.

    I dunno. Any ideas?

My rear exhaust flange leaks a bit until the bike gets warmed up ...
you might check that as well as any connections in the pipes . Are you
by any chance running a bit rich ?

I'll check around the pipes for sure. I was thinking right at the
header connection as I was smelling it pretty strong when riding.

    Are you

I am leaning toward this. I guess first thing to try is a little run
with some sea foam to clean possibly dirty injectors. Then look for
faulty sensors, or whatever else controls the fuel injectors. I think
you're right on that the smell is from a too rich mixture. It makes the
most sense. Fortunately, it still runs good, so hopefully an injector
might just be a little dirty. Let ya know when I find out.

    Thanks!

I have to leave for a few days to test out a new RV. When I get back I
gotta get this figured out. It was still strong in there this am.

Have some fun ! I fired up both bikes this morning just to hear them
run ... they both need an oil change . I spent the rest of the morning
tuning up and repairing some of my firewood processing equipment . Got
the pivoting jib crane (uses a 3,000 lb ATV winch) and log splitter
ready for duty . I've still got to get the chainsaws out and checked for
sharp chains , worn bars and general nuts-n-bolts tightening . Rusty the Tractor is running pretty good - he drags the trailer that I use to haul firewood out of the woods in addition to his duties as a mower and
    snowplow .
Ennit about time for a drink ? Just cracked the seal on this bottle
    of Ezra Brooks 99 ... let's sip !

Well, you hit the nail on the head, Snag. All it was in the end was
needing new plugs. I am embarrassed and can't believe I let them go
this long and didn't realize it immediately. Damn thing ran very good,
it just smelled. It's sitting next to me in the garage after a good
test spin today and she smells like a regular Harley now. End of story.

You should see the project on my bench right now . It's an Arctic Cat
600 vertical twin cylinder block . I've machined out the old (cast in
place) cylinder sleeves and fitted larger ones ... it's going to be a
660 when finished . Right now I'm fabricating a massive flycutter to
make the finish cut on the top of the cylinders . That will just leave
boring them out to about .003-.005 undersize so he can finish hone .
Next up will be opening up the wrist pin holes in his connecting rods
to fit the bigger pins in the bigger pistons .

Now that I'm thinking about it, I guess it isn't the end of the story.
I believe I should change the engine oil for sure. It's only 2K since I
did the oils. I know there is a chance running it rich like I did could
have contaminated the engine oil and I will change that. I'm wondering
if you guys think I'd be OK leaving the primary and tranny oil as is, or
if somehow it could have gotten a little fuel in there too?
