I've just recently become acquainted with Helen Traubel. She was
Bruinhilde in a 40's live recording aired by Sirius this week. What a
truly huge and glorious voice! So perfect for Wagner. The beauty and sumptuousness of tone are similar to Flagstad's. I was also impressed
with her rendition of Nobody Knows the Troubel I've seen on Youtube,
as well as singing jazz with Jerry Lewis. I think if I had to rank
Wagnerian sopranos I'd have to go 1. Flagstad, 2. Nilsson, and 3.
Traubel. Traubel's voice was actually more beautiful than Nilsson's to
my ear. I heard she didn't really enjoy singing Wagner and I wonder if
that colored her performances.
