Not a big one for me. I think he got it all wrong with the arrangement and Koko Taylor's take is WAY better.

    29. Wild About My Baby Slim Harpo (unreleased)

Did not know this, but I don't like it that much. Too fast for a blues record IMO.

I have this as 1961. Whitburn says "First released on Jin in 1961." I gather you have the Jin release as 1960. I see it on Jin as 1960 on Discogs. Is there a review of the Jin release or something?

We had this conversation on here before as I recall.

I used to have it as 1961 tho I knew it must have been released on the
very turn of the year. I had it as 1961 in the Singles Battle but
after conversations with fan friends and with so many online sources
switching it to late late 1960 I decided to change it.

So until some concrete evidence to the contrary comes

Stay by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs is the shortest record in the
1950s and 1960s to reach number one on the charts. It is 1 minute and 36 seconds long.

The song was released in 1960 and reached number one on the Billboard
Hot 100 chart in November of that year. It remained in the top spot for
one week before being replaced by Elvis Presley's song Are You Lonesome Tonight?.

The song's short length is part of what made it so popular. It was a
catchy and easy-to-remember tune that people could sing along to. The
song's message of love and longing also resonated with listeners.

Stay has been covered by many artists over the years, including The
Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Supremes. It has also been featured in
movies and television shows, such as Dirty Dancing and The Simpsons.

The song's lasting popularity is a testament to its catchy melody,
simple lyrics, and timeless message of love.

    Nope.

Sorry, but I will not consider "Heartaches" by Ted Weems if I am picking the best number one single of 1933.

Once the "number one" qualifier is added that changes the rules as far as I am concerned. When it's released has no bearing on when it was number one.

It can only be "from" the year that it was released in, and it can only be "number one" in a year where it actually was number one. Some records are crossovers that can be in the number one contest for 2 years, like "Singing The Blues."

    That's my take.

of *the* most famous/iconic pop records of the late 1950s/early 1960s?

For myself, from what I've heard from that period, I prefer late 50s
Brit rocker Marty Wilde who, in the US, was released on the Epic
    label:
    1957-1960
    Honeycomb
    Endless Sleep
    The Fire Of Love
    Donna
    A Teenager In Love
    Bad Boy
    You've Got Love
    My Baby Is Gone

Thanks, I'm sure I'll find things in each year.

    68. Sadie’s Back In Town - Sonny Burgess

Did not know it. Work keeping although the laughing hurts it a lot IMO.

    72. Popcorn Blues - Nathan Abshire & Pine Grove Boys

Did not know it, worth having.

    80. Tiger In Your Tank - Muddy Waters

We definitely part company on these real fast blues records. They sound forced to me, this one is only a 4.

    95. Are You Gonna Do - Nolan Strong & Diablos

Thought is was "What You Gonna Do" but I just looked at the label.

    96. Billy The Kid - Falcons (unreleased)

Didn't know it, stereo mix is bad, grabbed it in mono.

    99. Call Me Juke Boy - Juke Boy Bonner

    Did not know it.

    110. The Snake And The Book Worm - Coasters

    This terrible, I don't ven file it, it's a 2.

You should have given it at least two more rating points for the lyric:

    She's thinking about her education
    He's thinking about his ERECREATION.

I guess this is something of an aquired taste. I seem to remember nominating it in one of the contests and it not doing very well. I don't think the "laughter" is really neccessary but it doesn't bother me

Sure,it's not the Coasters greatest but its one I always liked. It wasn't the original version tho---there were no less than THREE versions released BEFORE The Coasters had their turn.

Here they are in order of release (all from 1959)

Pat Shannon on Decca (original version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mNoezJQ1mA

    RIchard Barrett on 20th Fox

Our own Cliff RIchard & The Shadows on UK Columbia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASYcxKvhHzs

Did not know this. Gonna keep a copy, it's a solid 6.

161 The Everly Brothers - Leave My Woman Alone - UK London 9250

This was on their first album in 1957, along with "Brand New Heartache" and "Be-Bop-A-Lula."

    170 The Everly Brothers - Be Bop A Lula - Cadence 1380

    189 B B King - Partin' Time - Kent 346

    Needed this.

Got up to #200, will finish going through these later.

16 Ford (Snooks) Eaglin - Yours Truly - Imperial 5671

NIce revival of the Pee Wee Crayton classic. A serious omission from my 1960 list that I'll rectify

    21 Elvis Presley - I Gotta Know - RCA 47-7810

Of course the original version on this was by our own Sir Cliff & The Shadows in 1959

27 Bobby Darin - Beyond The Sea - Atco 6158

Already out in 1959 on his "That's All" LP

    28 The Untouchables - Poor Boy Needs A Preacher - Madison 128

Doesn't quite make my Top 100 but this is a big favorite of mine too. Criminally never released here in UK

51 Chuck Berry - Too Pooped To Pop - Chess 1754

Sorry but this is definitely one of my most UNfavorite Chuck numbers

    64 Rosie & The Originals - Angel Baby - Highland 1011

Seems to be just about everybody's favorite bad record :-)

    94 Peggy Lee - C'est Magnifique - Capitol 4349

I have a soft spot for La Peg too but on this song my favorite version has to be Ol' Blue Eyes himself in the "Can-Can" movie

    151 Joe Melson - Shook Up - Hickory 1128

I'm with Bruce on this one. I never heard it before and it's pretty good. Thanks for the header

    165 Deane Hawley - Look For A Star - Dore 554

Several versions of this at the time but I still don't think any of the others beat the original Garry Mills version that was the theme for one of my favorite 60's horror movies "Circus Of Horrors".

And of course the UK Garry MILLS is not to be confused with the rip off American Garry MILES (aka Buzz Cason) who had the US hit version

    171 Ike & Tina Turner - A Fool In Love - Sue 730

One of my absolutely TOP 1960 favorites,a real SCORCHER!! Their best ever single IMO

    188 The Safaris - Image Of A Girl - Eldo 101

'Fess up time---a pretty dopey record but one I've always liked

217 Connie Francis - Many Tears Ago - MGM 12964

    Her best of the year

    239 The Bobbettes - I Shot Mr Lee - Atlantic 2069

Terrific sequel to their 1957 "Mr Lee" hit. Came out simultaneously in different versions on two labels Triple X and Atlantic but the latter is easily the best IMO

    255 Hollywood Argyles - Alley Oop - Lute 5905

Never a big favorite of mine but I always found The Dyna-Sores to be the best version over the Hollywood Argyles and Dante & The Evergreens

    259 Bobby Darin - Artificial Flowers - Atco 6179

The one Darin Atco US hit never released as a single here. Reason was it was from a flop Broadway musical "Tenderloin" that had its UK opening cancelled

    330 Beecher Hickman - Hey Blues - Cool 165

Another pretty decent one I did not know before. Thanks again for the tip off

    388 Sarah Vaughan - Serenata - Roulette 4285

Good to see this. "Broken Hearted Melody" is her best IMO but "Serenata" is a good second

    513 The Shadows - Apache - UK Columbia 4484

And also good to see this version here and not the dire Jorgen Ingmann thing that was the US hit

    536 Johnny Mathis - Maria - Columbia 41684

I'll give you three guesses at why this one has a special place with me :-)

Probably should have noted that when I first created my lists I was sticking with single releases, songs that would've been eligible for the singles battles. Probably a number of mistakes in that regard. Does leave out some of my favorite music. Elmore'
s Madison record and Please Set a Date would both be in my top 20.

    117 ¦ Satellite Baby ¦ Roosevely Sykes

    132 ¦ The Madison ¦ Al Brown's Tunestoppers

    Tunetoppers, not Tunestoppers, yes?

    255 ¦ Mean Woman ¦ Freddie Fender
(I see the Imperial label does say "Freddie," but everywhere else he is Freddy.)

    256 ¦ Rockin' Up ¦ Ronnie Molleen
If we're going by what the label says, this should be "Rockyn' Up" with
a y. (It's one of those rare rockabilly records I really like, but when
I nominated it here it crashed out.)

Then what else could you possibly like about it?

It's not something that can be put in words. I first heard it when Casey Kasem did a countdown of the Top 40 hits by acts that only made the charts with that one record. He also played "Stranded In The Jungle" by the Cadets as an extra. The top 3 songs I
think were "In The Year 2525," "Get A Job" amd "Little Star."

Joe Melson was Orbison's songwriting partner on things like "Only The Lonely" and "Blue Angel" and I think he also may be the one who sang the harmony parts on Roy's records. At first they tried to sell "Only The Lonely" to Elvis and the Everly Brothers
and they both turned it down, so the finally recorded it themselves. When Elvis first heard Roy's record of "Only The Lonely," the song that he had turned down, he bought a 25 box of the 45 to give out to his friends.

    Okay, here's my 1960 list.

    15 ¦ A Rockin' Good Way ¦ Brook Benton & Dinah Washington

I like the Priscilla Bowman (and The Spaniels) original but Dinah & Brook really nail this one

30 ¦ Turn My Back On You ¦ Billy Fury

Terrific UK recording and stand out track on the 10" "Sound Of Fury" Decca LP

¦ When Will I Be Loved ¦ Everly Brothers

Did any artist or act EVER leave a better track in the vaults after they switched to another label during our era?

Only one I can think of that comes near is Sam Cooke with "Wonderful World"

42 ¦ Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie ¦ Cosmic Rays

Real good doowop number from the guy who became "Sun Ra" the famous jazz musician

44 ¦ Many Tears Ago ¦ Connie Francis

Yeah I guess I agree Bruce.......her best evah!!

46 ¦ Georgia On My Mind ¦ Ray Charles

My favorite treatment of an old standard by an r&b name during our era

    57 ¦ Wild Weekend ¦ Rockin' Rebels

I still have the original 45 somewhere and its just "The Rebels" on the Mar-Lee release

62 ¦ Shakin' All Over ¦ Johnny Kidd & Pirates

My pick for the best ever UK release of our era

96 ¦ Sheila ¦ Tommy Roe (Judd version)

Not bad but I like the later ABC-Paramount version better

    107 ¦ Volare ¦ Bobby Rydell

Hate the song in any version

    117 ¦ Satellite Baby ¦ Roosevely Sykes

Good revamp of his earlier (and even better) "Sputnik Baby" on the House Of Sound label in Memphis in 1957

    127 ¦ I Gotta Know ¦ Elvis Presley

Originally by our own Sir Cliff and his Shadows recorded a year earlier than Elvis' version

    138 ¦ Greenfields ¦ Brothers Four

One of my 1960 "don't likes". Never ever warmed to this one sorry

    152 ¦ Ain't That A Kick In The Head ¦ Dean Martin

One of the highspots in the original "Oceans 11" and used in several movies since like "A Bronx Tale" for instance
