Why did Black Americans like this White record so much?
Or, could it be that the 1962 R&B charts were, in effect, rubbish
as regards reflecting the taste in music of persons of color?
What determined R&B chart ranking?

So did you find anything of interest, or just a bunch of Sinatra you didn't care about. I was surprised Roger warmed up to my Big Sambo favorite and you picked up on the Danny White song.

86. September Song - FlamingosI have this in 1953, when it was recorded, since it was released on an oldies package here rather than on a contemporary release.
110. Country Baby - Jimmy McCracklinThis guy has got to be the most underrated artist of our era. There's just so many good fucking records, and I keep finding more good ones that I don't have.
120. Lucy Lee - Lloyd GeorgeDid not know it, just decent.

The quite splendid "Love's All I'm Puttin' Down" appears in my 1954 list as an "unreleased master" as it does in yours. But a couple of other Spiders tracks from 1954 that never saw release in the 50's appear on my 1961 list---these are "Don't Knock"and "Walking Around In Circles"----because they were first released during the period we normally discuss---on a Spiders LP in 1961.They appear on your list that way too. And following the exact same way these old "unissued at the time" tracks were

I agree with the Spiders in 1961 because that album was not a greatest hits or best of, it was a contemporary release. The Moonglows/Flamingos thing was not, it was specifically a release of hits.September Song?"
So what is your cutoff for putting these things in the year of release rather than when they were recorded like "Love's All I'm Putting Down?" What rule do you use that puts that one back when it was recorded rather than when it was released like with "

The clue is in my previous post and I assumed it was also the "rule" you used.need.
"because they were first released during the period we normally discuss" That's the reason I put those Spiders things in 1961 and why "September Song" goes in 1962. I don't care what the thinking behind the album releases was. All of them were first released on commercial records in those years and that's all the detail I
It's why Fats' "I Hear You Knocking" goes in 1961 and not 1958 when it was recorded. Why the Drifters "Honky Tonky" goes in 1960 and not 1956. And why Jerry Lee's "Hello Hello Baby" is listed as 1961 and not 1958.
Yes,we stretch things a bit to accomodate something like Presley's "Ain't That Loving You Baby" as a 1964 record (on both out 1964 Top 100 lists) tho it was recorded way back in 1958
But first releases from way later time period than our normal area of conversation----like all the unissued Sun stuff that started coming out in the later 60's ----go in the years they were recorded as "unreleased" items

the contemporary charts. If it had come out on some album of mainly older releases as a bonus unissued thing, it would have gone in the year it was recorded. It's why Fats' "I Hear You Knocking" goes in 1961 and not 1958 when it was recorded. Obviously it's not 1964 because you have "Ain't That Loving You Baby" there. I don't put it in 1964 because I "stretched" anything. For me it's there because it was a regular release sent to radio stations as a new record, and it did become a hit on
So I assume your cutoff would then be 1965. Although I'd bet if we looked over your lists carefully we'd find something that was recorded in our era (1963 or earlier) that you listed in 1965 or later.
