Is this anything like "Boom Boom?"

    21. Just Like I Treat You Howlin' Wolf

This is a weak one for me, just a 5. Blues is not meant to be done this fast. My big Wolf number for this year is "I Ain't Superstitious."

28.. Don't Deceive Me Fats Domino

Strange, I did not have this on MP3 because it's not on the Bear Family 8 CD box set that's supposed to be complete. I do still have the original "Twistin' The Stomp" album.

    55. Rock And Roll Bo Diddley (unreleased)
    56. I Wanna Boogie Jimmy Anderson

    BEST HOT 100 No.1 SINGLE FROM 1962

I Can't Stop Loving You - Ray Charles

I'm going with "Duke Of Earl," which I guess doesn't qualify under your rules.

    WORST HOT 100 No.1 SINGLE FROM 1962

    Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares

That is terrible, but "Telstar" is worse for me. It's actually very irritating while "Johnny Angel" is just bad fluff.

    BEST C&W NO.1 SINGLE FROM 1962

    Devil Woman - Marty Robbins

I'm going with "That's My Pa" by Sheb Wooley, which also does not qualify under "Roger's Rules of number one singles."

BEST UK ARTST SINGLE FROM 1962

    P.S I Love You - Beatles

    The flip, of course.

Hey Paula - Paul & Paula

Why did Black Americans like this White record so much?

Or, could it be that the 1962 R&B charts were, in effect, rubbish
as regards reflecting the taste in music of persons of color?

    What determined R&B chart ranking?

Billboard's R&B charts got really fucked up starting in the late 50s when they were using stores that were selling rock and roll to teens as R&B stores. The Cash Box R&B charts were much better in the early 60s. "Hey Paula" only reached #12 on CB R&B.

Carl, this was first released on an album in 1959.

I found a few things I needed from your list. Can you post your lists from 1960 and 1962 in those 2 threads too?

It'll probably take me several days. My lists are about 7 years old. I spent about 4 hours updating this one and wasn't that thorough.

So did you find anything of interest, or just a bunch of Sinatra you didn't care about. I was surprised Roger warmed up to my Big Sambo favorite and you picked up on the Danny White song.

    Yes, I downloaded these items:

    Both sides of the Dukays
    Harvey
    Ikettes
    Interludes
    Longhair
    Ray & Darchaes
    Utopians

A few I knew but didn't have, and several I did not know before. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean about "warmed up" to the Big Sambo number---its an excellent record that I bought at the time from the old Transat shop in London when the label still said "BIG SAMBO" instead of the "Big Sam" on later releases

Not sure what you mean about "warmed up" to the Big Sambo number---its an excellent record that I bought at the time from the old Transat shop in London when the label still said "BIG SAMBO" instead of the "Big Sam" on later releases

Just remember nominating for the 1962 battle and you indicating you preferred the flip side. My copy also said Big Sambo. He got in trouble with the Southern Leadership Council for the name and his performance and the record was banned in the US just
as it was taking off. It reached top 5 in Phoenix before that happened. Always been a favorite of mine.

    72. Any Other Way - William Bell

I had this as 1961, but '62 seems right.

    77. Tricky Dicky - Richie Barrett

Never heard of this, don't like it.

    85. Losing Battle - Johnny Adams

This should be "A Losing Battle."

    86. September Song - Flamingos

I have this in 1953, when it was recorded, since it was released on an oldies package here rather than on a contemporary release.

    106. Alley Music - Hound Dog Taylor

    Did not know this.

    108. Tore Up - Smiley Lewis

Forgot all about this, it's just okay.

    109. Hello Little School Girl - Smokey Smothers

Had this on CD, never MP3ed it before. just okay.

    110. Country Baby - Jimmy McCracklin

This guy has got to be the most underrated artist of our era. There's just so many good fucking records, and I keep finding more good ones that I don't have.

    115. Down The Road - Dootones

Did not know it, pretty good for a 60s doo wop.

    120. Lucy Lee - Lloyd George

Did not know it, just decent.

I always figured they set the Kent label up to issue older Modern and RPM tracks but a few new things did appear on the label

    77. Tricky Dicky - Richie Barrett> Never heard of this, don't like it.

Both sides on this were H-U-G-E on the UK r&b circuit and were picked up by loads of UK music acts at the time. Most of the groups aroud at the time from The Beatles on down picked up on "Some Other Guy" and "Tricky Dicky" was no slouch either

    85. Losing Battle - Johnny Adams
This should be "A Losing Battle."

    OK I'll remedy that

    86. September Song - Flamingos
I have this in 1953, when it was recorded, since it was released on an oldies package here rather than on a contemporary release.

I don't really see any difference. Vee Jay certainly marketed the LP in Billboard etc as a "new release"

All greatest hits and and collection albums are "new releases," but are not released looking to break into the contemporary market and become a hit. I'm not gonna place some real old unissued track in the year that some collection package was released.
Tell me, do you have "Love's All I'm Puttin' Down" by the Spiders in 1992 when it was released? It was a new release, so based on what you're saying it has to go in 1992.

    No it doesn't.

The quite splendid "Love's All I'm Puttin' Down" appears in my 1954 list as an "unreleased master" as it does in yours. But a couple of other Spiders tracks from 1954 that never saw release in the 50's
appear on my 1961 list---these are "Don't Knock" and "Walking Around In Circles"----because they were first released during the period we normally discuss---on a Spiders LP in 1961.They appear on your list that way too. And following the exact same way
these old "unissued at the time" tracks were treated naturally places The Flamingos' "September Song" from 1953-- but first released in 1962---on my list for that year

    Where it belongs

I agree with the Spiders in 1961 because that album was not a greatest hits or best of, it was a contemporary release. The Moonglows/Flamingos thing was not, it was specifically a release of hits.

So what is your cutoff for putting these things in the year of release rather than when they were recorded like "Love's All I'm Putting Down?" What rule do you use that puts that one back when it was recorded rather than when it was released like with "
    September Song?"

The clue is in my previous post and I assumed it was also the "rule" you used.

"because they were first released during the period we normally discuss"

That's the reason I put those Spiders things in 1961 and why "September Song" goes in 1962. I don't care what the thinking behind the album releases was. All of them were first released on commercial records in those years and that's all the detail I
    need.

It's why Fats' "I Hear You Knocking" goes in 1961 and not 1958 when it was recorded. Why the Drifters "Honky Tonky" goes in 1960 and not 1956. And why Jerry Lee's "Hello Hello Baby" is listed as 1961 and not 1958.

Yes,we stretch things a bit to accomodate something like Presley's "Ain't That Loving You Baby" as a 1964 record (on both out 1964 Top 100 lists) tho it was recorded way back in 1958

But first releases from way later time period than our normal area of conversation----like all the unissued Sun stuff that started coming out in the later 60's ----go in the years they were recorded as "unreleased" items

There's no argument there. We both list all of those when they were released.

    So what is your cutoff?

Obviously it's not 1964 because you have "Ain't That Loving You Baby" there. I don't put it in 1964 because I "stretched" anything. For me it's there because it was a regular release sent to radio stations as a new record, and it did become a hit on the
contemporary charts. If it had come out on some album of mainly older releases as a bonus unissued thing, it would have gone in the year it was recorded.

So I assume your cutoff would then be 1965. Although I'd bet if we looked over your lists carefully we'd find something that was recorded in our era (1963 or earlier) that you listed in 1965 or later.

There's no argument there. We both list all of those when they were released.

    So what is your cutoff?

Obviously it's not 1964 because you have "Ain't That Loving You Baby" there. I don't put it in 1964 because I "stretched" anything. For me it's there because it was a regular release sent to radio stations as a new record, and it did become a hit on
the contemporary charts.

I show a few older things in 1965---Elvis' "Tell Me Why" for example. And a couple of Elmore James things that he would have had trouble recording that late.

So you don't really have a specific cutoff then, it's more by your gut I guess.

    Okay, my list:

20 ¦ I Left My Heart In San Francisco ¦ Tony Bennett

Along with Sinatra one of the best pop balladeers and for my money this was his best

37 ¦ What Time Is It ¦ Jive Five

One of the best "dream sequences" in The Sopranos where Tony is getting some serious treatment from Melfi under the bedclothes whilst all the time this great number is playing

50 ¦ At The Club ¦ Ray Charles

Shame this really good double sider (b/w "Hide 'Nor Hair") was stopped in its tracks on the charts when ABC -Paramount was forced to rush release "I Can't Stop Loving You" as a single taken from his red hot new best selling LP

68 ¦ Jack That Cat Was Clean ¦ Dr. Horse

Terrific jive monologue by Doc Horse aka Al Pittman one time member of the old Doc Sausage r&b troupe

    93 ¦ Lovers Who Wander ¦ Dion

I always preferred the "(I Was) Born To Cry" side of this Dion single. One of his best!!

    108 ¦ Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow ¦ Rivingtons

And definitely the flipside on this one---"Deep Water" the best thing the RIvingtons ever did

    120 ¦ Chains ¦ Cookies

The Everlys recorded the original on this, several months before the Cookies. But their version stayed in the vaults for two decades before release

130 ¦ Any Day Now ¦ Chuck Jackson

My favorite Chuck Jackson record and one of the best songs Bacharach ever wrote

133 ¦ Village Of Love ¦ Nathaniel Mayer & Fabulous Twilights

Devora Brown told us this was Fortune's biggest ever single (thanks to a United Artists distribution deal) and the ONLY Fortune single ever to get UK release
