    precursor/forerunner to rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s

    ** alt.rock-n-roll.oldies was born in Aug 1993 **

    lead proponent - Rick Schubert
"for discussion of chartmakers and chart hits from 1950-1970..."

(prior to a.r.o., Rick, for example, was a member of rec.music.misc)

a week into a.r.o's existence, postings+poll indicated there were 137
    followers of the newsgroup

within 9 months there were 3200+ articles posted to a.r.o.

intending to replace and 'eliminate' a.r.o. there was
created, on Oct 24, 1996 the newsgroups:

    rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s
    rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1960s

    (together with rec.music.rock-pop-r&b.1970s)

Proponents for these 3 rec. newsgroups were:
    Rick Schubert
    Norm Katuna
Marc Wielage (in particular he supported .1970s)
    Marc Dashevsky {born 1952 btw}
Lisa Revell (British? and focused on 50s RnR)

(in 1996) 214 valid Voters (yes and no) for these proposed rec.
newsgroups included (apart from the proponents above):
    Steve McArthur
    Leonard Blanks
    John Wade
    Clifford Blau
    Randy Price
    Robert J. Boyne
    Thomas M. Blumenthal

AOL customers (such as our Steve) could finally access these new Oct
newsgroups in Dec 1996; a.r.o. eventually died, in effect, in Dec 2000
    CHARTER: rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s:

The newsgroup rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s is intended for the
discussion of rock 'n' roll, pop vocal, and rhythm & blues music of
the 1950s. News and information on the songs and musical artists
of the 1950s is encouraged, along with reviews of CD and vinyl
reissues of 1950s music. Additionally, discussions of the roots of
rock 'n' roll and the roots of R&B in terms of songs and artists
    prior to 1950 are welcome.

Posts that are inappropriate for all three newsgroups include:
    flames, trolls, spams and binaries.
    ...

    However, as Ken Whiton posted:
It became obvious that the majority of participants in the '60s group
were primarily interested in the mid to late '60s, and that the years
1960 through 1963 were getting short shrift over there.

    And Roger posted:
The period 1960-1963 was thus deemed the "cusp years" and was absorbed
into OUR timelime for discussion---especially since the 1960's group
members didn't seem to EVER discuss (or even be aware of) any music
    that was pre-Beatles.

    a.r.o. continued Rick Schubert's/Jamie Lubin's/Ron Crandall's/Howard Teitelbaum's/Barry Silk's Golden Oldies Lyics Quiz series with GOLQ47
on Aug 10, 1993; GOLQ01 was posted by Rick on *Sep 5, 1990*
    in rec.games.trivia
(each Quiz was composed by just one of the above - they took turns)
