10 more obscurities chosen at random from my favorites lists

    Today......from 1962

Jimmy Anderson & The Joy Jumpers – I Wanna Boogie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8evnxQVuns

Nice rockin’ blues from Jimmy Anderson who hailed from Natchez Mississippi. Recorded in 1962 for Jay Miller’s Excello company in Crowley,Louisiana and released on the subsidiary Zynn label. Record sold well enough in the immediate area to get picked
up for national distribution by Randy Wood’s Dot label.

The Joy Jumpers were Al Foreman and Bobby McBride (gtr) Austin Broussard (dms)

    Larry Brinkley – Jackson Dog
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XUHsJUCY-g

This rockabilly guy hailed from Rienzi Mississippi. The rockabilly gem “Jackson Dog” was recorded for the tiny Westwood label in the appropriate city of Jackson Tennessee.

    Larry Dale – Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m8QwOHJAvA

Recorded November 1961 in New York City : Larry Dale (vcl) Matt Gray (ten sax) Bob Gaddy (pno) Everett Barksdale (bs) Willie Jones (dms)

There are several really good versions of Sticks McGhee’s immortal “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee” and veteran Larry Dale’s reading on Atlantic released in 1962 is surely one of them.

The Donays – Devil In His Heart
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loK_t2_bFeQ

The Donays were a five-member all femme group hailing from Hamtramck Michigan led by Yvonne Singleton (later of Motown group The Elgins) who recorded their one and only record for the Correc-Tone company in Detroit who apparently sold the masters on to
Bobby Shad’s Brent outfit who finally released “Bad Boy”/” Devil In His Heart” in August 1962 . Note “Devil…” was the B-side of the record, exactly as it was when the record was released by Oriole here in the UK in October 1962.

No idea how many (or more likely how few!) Oriole sold here but as well as selling one to yours truly they did sell another copy to a young George Harrison of Liverpool parish---who eventually persuaded the group he was part of to work up their own
version of the side he liked most---now suitably retitled as
    “Devil In Her Heart”.

Frank Frost – Jelly Roll King
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3D6ftJUw8Co

Hailing from Auvergne,Arkansas bluesman Frost & his Night Hawks came to the attention of Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis in early 1962 and was immediately rushed into a marathon 15-number session (from which nothing was issued) in April that year.
Phillips persevered with his new signing with more recording through the month until April 28th when the fine stomping blues “Jelly Roll King” and “Crawlback” were laid down and were promptly released as a single. An LP entitled “Hey! Boss Man
soon followed containing many of the earlier tracks mentioned above

Dr Horse - Jack That Cat Was Clean
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu2z4PluVYI

Aka Al Pittman erstwhile comic and dancer who’d been around since the 30’s (he’d been a long time member of Doc Sausage’s comedy troupe) made his first appearance on record in 1960 on the Clown label with “Woman You Talk Too Much” a bluesy
monologue. In similar vein was his first effort for Fire Records in 1961 “I’m Tired Of It” before he came out with his best monologue yet---“Jack That Cat Was Clean” a spoken eulogy to what sounds like an extremely well heeled well dressed well
monied well woman supplied super-pimp friend that is a real hoot to listen to!!

Raymond Lewis – I’m Gonna Put Some Hurt On You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8bzhPntBLA

Veteran Lewis who had been around since the mid-50’s (then as a sideman playing and singing in the Clowns group backing Huey “Piano” Smith) recorded the original of “I’m Gonna Put Some Hurt On You” in 1962. The song was recorded for Joe
Banashak’s Instant label in New Orleans and was later also recorded in versions by Alvin Robinson and Art Neville.

Prince La La – Gettin’ Married Soon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmYCxTJstE4

In real life “Prince La La” African prince and voodoo master was actually mild mannered Lawrence Nelson (whose brother Walter was Fats Domino’s guitarist).

Signed to Harold Battiste’s AFO (All For One) label Nelson recorded the splendid “Gettin’ Married Soon” in late 1961. When released in January 1962 it became his second release for the company. Sadly he died soon afterwards in mysterious
circumstances which have never been fully explained

    The Rivingtons – Deep Water
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XniibLxPno

Not strictly by the book an “obscurity” I guess this but since this gem on the flip of their big 1962 hit “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” on Liberty seems so little known I think it fits the bill here.

Much as I like the hit side of the record, for me the ultra-soulful “Deep Water” is THE real gem and a half of the single here!!

The Shells – Deep In My Heart
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l27E6sux_1M

Veteran group The Shells (comprising Nate Bouknight (lead),Bobby Nurse (tenor),Randy Shade Alston (2nd tenor) Gus Geeter (bar) Danny Small (bass) had been around since 1957 with regular releases covering several labels but mostly for Johnson records. The
group were quite successful with their biggest moment coming in 1960 when a reissued “Baby Oh Baby” on Johnson (first released in 1957 and their debut single) soared to #21 on the Billboard Hot Hundred.

The beautiful “Deep In My Heart” ballad came in 1962 and sold well enough to gain a rare UK release on London label for the group (from their extensive output only “Baby Oh Baby” had had UK release reviously). The group were active for many years
afterwards even recording for Ronnie I’s Clifton outfit in the 1970’s

    A 7 for me, and it's on my 1962 list at #150.

    Larry Brinkley – Jackson Dog
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XUHsJUCY-g

A clear tribute to Carl Perkins and his "Matchbox" is #8 for me for 1962. Only a 9 though, as I have just 3tens from this weak year.

    Larry Dale – Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m8QwOHJAvA

    It's #57 for me for 1962. A low 8.

The Beatles used to meet at Brian Epstein's record store just after closing time to go through the new releases every few days or so, and this was one of those that they discovered that way. Just a 5 for me with the Fab Four's version a 6 in 1963.

Frank Frost – Jelly Roll King
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3D6ftJUw8Co

    I've got a 6 on this.

Dr Horse - Jack That Cat Was Clean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu2z4PluVYI

    It's #68 for 1962 for me. A very low 8.

Raymond Lewis – I’m Gonna Put Some Hurt On You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8bzhPntBLA

A NOLA cult classic that's a 7 for me and checks in as #114 on my 1962 list.

Prince La La – Gettin’ Married Soon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmYCxTJstE4

    A high 5 for me.

    The Rivingtons – Deep Water
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XniibLxPno

You've mentioned this many times here. I've got it as a 6. They have another odd one in 1963 that I like better.

The Shells – Deep In My Heart
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l27E6sux_1M

A cult favorite among a certain sect of NY and NJ doo-woppers, as is the flip side "Happy Holiday." Just a 5 for me on "Dep" but the flip is a 6.

Okay, 10 of mine minus the ones Roger already posted. Each item's ranking on my 1962 list is shown.

    2 ¦ I'm In Love Again ¦ Upsetters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1Zx3h53FkY

Not an obscurity any more, but it was at the time before word spread around later on that it was Little Richard on the vocals with his touring band.

3 ¦ Pink Pegged Slacks ¦ Eddie Cochran

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn_8vRg-ZQg

An obscure cut for him, at least in the USA. Not sure if people knew it in the UK already in 1962. The third and final 10 on my 1962 list. BTW, the first was my favorite item of the year, "I Need Your Lovin'" by Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford

    15 ¦ Beneath The Sun ¦ Equallos

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPGa5BFdbPI

On of those strange Sun Ra projects, it became a cult classic among vocal group collectors when it was "reissued" by Louie Silvani in the mid-70s. Before that very few people had ever heard of it. The bass singer is outrageous.

    16 ¦ Broadway ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uAezYWhIQM

I'd rather use songs by lesser known artists, but here's another one that literally nobody heard in 1962.

28 ¦ Just Your Fool ¦ Little Walter

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1Umm6fT2ek

This song was a minor hit for Buddy and Ella Johnson about 8 years earlier, but it did nothing by Little Walter in 1962. The Rolling Stones did it on the blues album they released a couple of years ago.

39 ¦ Every Night About This Time ¦ Upsetters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CyjcW07WdU

An even lesser known one with Little Richard leading the Upsetters, doing an early Fats Domino hit better than Fats did it IMO. A hokey spoken word opening, but then it takes off heavily.

42 ¦ Hello Baby ¦ Lee "Shot" Williams

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xc_EyXSUpY

Frankie C. turned me on to this one. Early effort by an act that became a cult soul/funk favorite in later years.

    65 ¦ So What ¦ Bill Black's Combo

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW0oReX5x1s

Discovered this one on a Northern Soul list. Kicking instrumental from the BBC.

    69 ¦ Power Of Love ¦ Ambassadors

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRJBLplEZmA

Diane got me into this bluesy girl group burner.

    116 ¦ Trust Him ¦ James Cleveland

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWDk_5K9eKw

Let's see if anybody else digs this like I do. A smoker. Check the picture on the video, it was done in some church in Nutley, NJ, which is still now a pretty much all white town.

#6 on my 1962 favorites list. Superb version from LR & co. A cert 10

3 ¦ Pink Pegged Slacks ¦ Eddie Cochran

Recorded in '56 first released in 1962 ("Cherished Memories" LP) and yes we got it here that year too.
    #61 on my list,a solid 8

    15 ¦ Beneath The Sun ¦ Equallos

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPGa5BFdbPI

On of those strange Sun Ra projects, it became a cult classic among vocal group collectors when it was "reissued" by Louie Silvani in the mid-70s. Before that very few people had ever heard of it. The bass singer is outrageous.

Just a 7 and #320 on my list

    16 ¦ Broadway ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uAezYWhIQM

I'd rather use songs by lesser known artists, but here's another one that literally nobody heard in 1962.

Another 7 and you're right---I never heard it in '62 (not till much later).#219 here

    7 again and #292

39 ¦ Every Night About This Time ¦ Upsetters

An even lesser known one with Little Richard leading the Upsetters, doing an early Fats Domino hit better than Fats did it IMO. A hokey spoken word opening, but then it takes off heavily.

Wonderful version. A 9 with me and #27

42 ¦ Hello Baby ¦ Lee "Shot" Williams

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xc_EyXSUpY

Frankie C. turned me on to this one. Early effort by an act that became a cult soul/funk favorite in later years.

    High 7 and #164

    65 ¦ So What ¦ Bill Black's Combo

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW0oReX5x1s

Discovered this one on a Northern Soul list. Kicking instrumental from the BBC.

Not listed. Never did much for me,just ok I guess.Probably a 5 or so

    69 ¦ Power Of Love ¦ Ambassadors

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRJBLplEZmA

Diane got me into this bluesy girl group burner.

Prefer the "I Wonder Why" side on this. A 7 and #520. "Power Of Love" = a 7 and #569

    116 ¦ Trust Him ¦ James Cleveland

Okay some were already on my faves list - these being

Jimmy Evans - The Joint's Really Jumpin'
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KakJop2cs-8

Long time favorite hot rocker on the Clearmont label. An 8 for me and #52 on my 1962 faves list

Pee Wee Crayton -Git To Gittin'
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkXHFsvKwfY

After many years of recording for what seemed like every label in the entire USA Pee Wee found himself with Mercury's Smash subsid in in 1962 for this rather decent item. A 7 on my list and #313 in 1962

Of the rest those I knew I rate thus

    Joe Liggins 6
    Cookie Gabriel 6
    Marvin Phillips - 6
Rod Bernard 5 (tho I really liked his earlier that year "Colinda" that gets a 7)

The rest were new to me

    The Creators - 6
    Jimmy Van Eaton - 5
    Carrie Grant - 5

That doesn't seem practical to me. "Can't Explain" by thee Who was released here in December 1964, but not until January 1965 in the UK.

    should perhaps be 1963?

That doesn't seem practical to me. "Can't Explain" by the Who was released here in December 1964, but not until January 1965 in the UK.

I was referring to US recordings (usually by US artists).
You are talking about a presumably Foreign recording by a Foreign
    artist?

Carl, recently, was clearly reluctant to double-check that all records
on his 1959 list were indeed released in that year. Now you're going
to ask that in addition to US releases, Carl also check for any
foreign releases on albums, even though 99.99% of recordings by US
artists are first released in the US.

What I suggest members do in this newsgroup, just with regard to *US*
artists, is to simply let Roger or Bruce kindly inform them, on the
rare occasion, that actually there was a foreign release of the
    record in an earlier year.

    This belongs in 1961

by the way, this recording was first released in Germany in 1960
    on a single

I will look forward to updating my files when you provide the full details on this 1960 release on here

There is no "perhaps" about it. I have Eddie's German discography and this release of "Nervous Breakdown"
in that country was in May 1963

THIS is the first release anywhere of "Nervous Breakdown"

    https://www.45cat.com/record/reg1301

And released here in the UK in November 1961 exactly as I indicated

BTW this release was one of the last records of US Liberty label material to appear on London label here.

From February 1962 Liberty gained its own label here distributed by EMI and terminated the previous licencing agreement with UK Decca via their London label
