• TEN FAVE UNRELEASED TRACKS FROM....1960

From Roger@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jul 2 05:54:47 2024
Ten fave unreleased tracks chosen from my yearly Favorites lists

    Today………from 1960

HANK BALLARD & THE MIDNIGHTERS – KEEP ON CHURNIN’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlgjc-D-D6c

Recorded for King this is an excellent revival of the Wynonie Harris
classic from 1952 that appears on the Bear Family “Nothing But Good” multi-CD set that was released in 2009

BO DIDDLEY – DO WHAT I SAY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zg-kluLA4Y

“Do What I Say” was recorded at the 1960 sessions that produced the
great “Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger” album. However the track was shelved
and not used on the original Checker issue of the LP in December 1960.
When the LP was repackaged and reissued in 1988 “Do What I Say” was
    added as a “bonus” track

THE FALCONS – BILLY THE KID
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUe7KnQBaa8

Okay controversy time!! I have this as recorded in September 1960 which
should make it a United Artists
recording but the 45rpm of it that came out here in UK in 1968 (its
first release I think) attributes the recording to LuPine—the company
that put out the great “I Found A Love “ in 1962. Clearly the lead here
is Wilson Pickett. Okay so what’s the deal with this one?

SLIM HARPO – WILD ABOUT MY BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPbBIWBiteQ

Terrific rockin’ blues recorded for Excello in November 1960 in Crowley,Louisiana. Features Slim Harpo
(vcl, hca) Willie “Tomcat” Parker (ts) Lazy Lester (hca) Rudolph Richard (gtr) James Johnson (gtr) T.J Kitchen (bs) Sammy K. Brown (dms)

First released on 45rpm “Wild About My Baby”/”Rainin’ In My Heart” (Blues Unlimited 2015 in 1979)

JESSIE HILL – GET IN TOUCH

Recorded shortly after his big hit “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” in 1960 the
rhythmic “Get In Touch” sadly languished
in the vaults of Minit Records in New Orleans for some years before
finally being rescued and included in the Jessie Hill Charly label
collection “Y’all Ready Now?” set in 1987

    ELMORE JAMES – MADISON BLUES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ02Yt-Bla8

My #1 favorite unreleased blues number of the year was recorded for
    Chess April 14 1960 in Chicago,Ill.
Personnel : Elmore James (vcl, gtr) J. T Brown (ts) Johnny Jones (pno)
Homesick James (gtr) Henry “Sneaky Joe” Harris or Sam Myers (dms)

First released on the 1968 Blue Horizon LP “Tough” (also featuring John Brim) liner notes by Neil Slaven

    THE MONOTONES – FOREVER YOURS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CgPod883PI

If ever there was an archetypal “one hot wonder group it was The
Monotones. Hailing from Newark New Jersey
the group cut their debut record “Book Of Love” for the tiny Hull label subsid Mascot. When it started selling big Mascot had to gain national distribution with Chess taking over the reins on the record and them
reissuing it on their Argo subsid---where it promptly leapt to #5 on the Billboard chart.

Sadly their fame did not last and several Argo followups all bombed
leading to Hull taking back control over the group’s records leading to
them recording a logical followup to their hit in January
1960---“Reading The Book Of Love” released later in the year. This
session also produced the number in question here-the catchy “Forever Yours” which went unreleased at the time. It finally saw light of day
when released on the Murray Hill LP “Who Wrote The Book Of Love” LP in 1985.

CHARLIE RICH – RIGHT BEHIND YOU BABY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtB3LPzipOI

Recorded May 27 1960 for Sun (Phillips International) at 639 Madison Av
Memphis Tennessee.Charlie Rich (vcl, pno) Scotty Moore (gtr) Billy Riley
(bs) J.M Van Eaton (dms) Martin Willis (ten sax).

First released on “The Early Years” LP (Sun International 132) in 1974

Note : though Charlie wrote this song his 1960 version is NOT the
original since that honor goes to Ray Smith who recorded and released
    the song in 1958
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyTZ2Pkb9cA

Vince Taylor also released his version here in the UK in December 1958 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tILXo4yut70

    JACK SCOTT – LONESOME MARY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEdeHXVyp9E

The moody “Lonesome Mary” was recorded for Top Rank 2 September 1960 at Bell Sound Studio in New York City featuring Jack Scott (vcl.gtr) + The Chantones. “Patsy”- the released Top Rank single also came from this session. First release of “Lonesome Mary” is on the album “Jack Scott Vol.2” on Buffalo Bop in 1984

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON – LITTLE VILLAGE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBrucglL2XA

“You name it yo’ mamma if you want……..”

One of my favorite Sonny Boy (II) numbers punctuated by some amusing
studio talk (including the retort from Sonny Boy above) had to wait
several years from its 1960 recording date until it was finally included
in the album “Bummer Road” in 1969

I think you're right. Disco-File has the song recorded and unreleased on
United Artists. The London label calls it a Lupine master. Chances are
they recorded it for both labels.

    Today………from 1960

I finally have some time to comment on these and maybe list some of my
own. I've been insanely busy lately with the reggae stuff I am selling.
I've sold loads of items for $100 or more. One guy in Japan bought a
$1200 album and a $950 forty-five. Every time I try and list more stuff
there's 3 new orders to fill.

I would not call it "excellent," but it's good, which is what a "6"
    denotes in my rating system.

BO DIDDLEY – DO WHAT I SAY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zg-kluLA4Y

    I have a 7 on this and it's on my 1960 list at #232.

THE FALCONS – BILLY THE KID
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUe7KnQBaa8

Did not know this one, need to hear it more, but it's certainly at least
    a 6.

SLIM HARPO – WILD ABOUT MY BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPbBIWBiteQ

I only have a 5 (pretty good) on this one. Roger likes real uptempo
blues records better than I do. Over the years he's mentioned several
things like this as favorites, but I prefer the mid tempo things with
blues acts. Most of the real fast stuff feels forced to me and does not
really fit the blues sound IMO.

JESSIE HILL – GET IN TOUCH

Like this one a lot. I've got an 8 (excellent) on it, and it checks in
on my 1960 lit at a very respectable #41.

    ELMORE JAMES – MADISON BLUES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ02Yt-Bla8

This is certainly the prize of the unreleased items in 1960. Roger first
heard it on tapes I made presenting the results of a top artists survey
I did back when I first joined this group. I first heard the song by
George Thorogood, and then discovered the killer Elmore James version on
a European that featured Elmore and John Brim. A great 10, and #4 on my
1960 list. Here is the top 10:

    1 ¦ Spoonful ¦ Howlin' Wolf
    2 ¦ Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters
    3 ¦ New Orleans ¦ Gary U.S. Bonds
4 ¦ Madison Blues (unreleased master) ¦ Elmore James
5 ¦ My Girl Josephine ¦ Fats Domino
6 ¦ Finger Poppin' Time ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters
    7 ¦ Let's Do The Cha-Cha ¦ Magnificents
    8 ¦ Suddenly There's A Valley ¦ Drifters
    9 ¦ Sweet Rockin' Mama ¦ Hi-Tombs
    10 ¦ Doggin' Around ¦ Jackie Wilson

By the way, Diane first heard #7 in my car on our first date, and that
was all I needed to reel her in.

    THE MONOTONES – FOREVER YOURS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CgPod883PI

Did not know this, but it's one of those later doo wops that doesn't do anything for me. I'll give it a 4.

CHARLIE RICH – RIGHT BEHIND YOU BABY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtB3LPzipOI

Don't have this on the computer. Its good. I think maybe I heard it
before like 405 years ago on some Sun reissue album. Of course the
better version is the one that you mentioned by Ray Smith on Sun from
    1958.

    JACK SCOTT – LONESOME MARY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEdeHXVyp9E

I am a big Jack Scott fan, but I don't like this as much as you seem
    too. A low 6 I'd say.

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON – LITTLE VILLAGE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBrucglL2XA

“You name it yo’ mamma if you want……..”

"Little Village, mother fucker! it's a small town."

Had it on a 4 CD Sonny Boy set of his Chess stuff. I never made an MP3
of the song. The song wasn't all that good, it was the studio talk from
before the song that was the highlight.

The link is not suitable for a playlist because of the very loud

I have a 3 on this; it oh so pales into insignificance compared

few tracks score 8+ in my scheme of rating).

Truly interesting from Charlie. Oi'll give it foive (on my scale)

I am a big Jack Scott fan, but I don't like this as much as you seem

I enjoy the very best of Jack Scott, in particular "Oh Little One",
followed by "Two Timin' Woman" and "Bella".

As for "Lonesome Mary", it's a 3 for me.

Ten fave unreleased tracks chosen from my yearly Favorites lists

    Today………from 1960

I finally have some time to comment on these and maybe list some of my
own. I've been insanely busy lately with the reggae stuff I am selling.
I've sold loads of items for $100 or more. One guy in Japan bought a
$1200 album and a $950 forty-five. Every time I try and list more stuff there's 3 new orders to fill.

HANK BALLARD & THE MIDNIGHTERS – KEEP ON CHURNIN’
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlgjc-D-D6c

Recorded for King this is an excellent revival of the Wynonie Harris
classic from 1952 that appears on the Bear Family “Nothing But Good”
multi-CD set that was released in 2009

I would not call it "excellent," but it's good, which is what a "6"
    denotes in my rating system.

#236 on my list and a good 7

BO DIDDLEY – DO WHAT I SAY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zg-kluLA4Y

    I have a 7 on this and it's on my 1960 list at #232

    ~205 and a high 7

THE FALCONS – BILLY THE KID
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUe7KnQBaa8

Did not know this one, need to hear it more, but it's certainly at least
    a 6.

    #92 and an 8

SLIM HARPO – WILD ABOUT MY BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPbBIWBiteQ

I only have a 5 (pretty good) on this one. Roger likes real uptempo
blues records better than I do. Over the years he's mentioned several
things like this as favorites, but I prefer the mid tempo things with
blues acts. Most of the real fast stuff feels forced to me and does not really fit the blues sound IMO.

We part company seriously on this little gem

    #30 and a low 9

JESSIE HILL – GET IN TOUCH

Like this one a lot. I've got an 8 (excellent) on it, and it checks in
on my 1960 lit at a very respectable #41.

    #290 and a 7

    ELMORE JAMES – MADISON BLUES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ02Yt-Bla8

This is certainly the prize of the unreleased items in 1960. Roger first heard it on tapes I made presenting the results of a top artists survey
I did back when I first joined this group.

Your memory is better than mine. I vaguely remember my first hearing and
    your description sounds about right

I first heard the song by George Thorogood, and then discovered the
    killer Elmore James version on
a European that featured Elmore and John Brim. A great 10, and #4 on my
    1960 list

We align (almost) on this one - #8 on my list and a 10

    Here is the top 10:

    1 ¦ Spoonful ¦ Howlin' Wolf
    2 ¦ Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters
    3 ¦ New Orleans ¦ Gary U.S. Bonds
4 ¦ Madison Blues (unreleased master) ¦ Elmore James
5 ¦ My Girl Josephine ¦ Fats Domino
6 ¦ Finger Poppin' Time ¦ Hank Ballard & Midnighters
    7 ¦ Let's Do The Cha-Cha ¦ Magnificents
    8 ¦ Suddenly There's A Valley ¦ Drifters
    9 ¦ Sweet Rockin' Mama ¦ Hi-Tombs
    10 ¦ Doggin' Around ¦ Jackie Wilson

    Here's mIne

    1. Georgia On My Mind Ray Charles
    2. Stay Maurice Williams & Zodiacs
    3. Let It Rock Chuck Berry
    4. Spoonful Howlin' Wolf
    5. A Fool In Love Ike & Tina Turner
    6. My Girl Josephine Fats Domino
    7. Wang Dang Doodle Howlin' Wolf
    8. Madison Blues Elmore James (unreleased)
    9. At Last Etta James
    10. Save The Last Dance For Me Drifters

By the way, Diane first heard #7 in my car on our first date, and that
was all I needed to reel her in.

You better stop right there with this one---its day time and there may
    be children about :)

    THE MONOTONES – FOREVER YOURS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CgPod883PI

Did not know this, but it's one of those later doo wops that doesn't do anything for me. I'll give it a 4.

    #613 and a 7

CHARLIE RICH – RIGHT BEHIND YOU BABY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtB3LPzipOI

Don't have this on the computer. Its good. I think maybe I heard it
before like 405 years ago on some Sun reissue album. Of course the
better version is the one that you mentioned by Ray Smith on Sun from
    1958.

    The Rich I have as #569 and a 7

    I have the Scott as #195 in 1958 and a high 7 (competition in 1958 is a
    lot fiercer)

    JACK SCOTT – LONESOME MARY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEdeHXVyp9E

I am a big Jack Scott fan, but I don't like this as much as you seem
    too. A low 6 I'd say.

    #279 and a 7

SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON – LITTLE VILLAGE
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBrucglL2XA

“You name it yo’ mamma if you want……..”

"Little Village, mother fucker! it's a small town."

Had it on a 4 CD Sonny Boy set of his Chess stuff. I never made an MP3
of the song. The song wasn't all that good, it was the studio talk from before the song that was the highlight.

    #198 and a low 8

We're not too far apart on most of this stuff.
