• Is this really true?

From DianeE@21:1/5 to All on Thu Aug 8 11:06:30 2024
This morning I heard a bit on the radio about a new documentary film.
It's the story of Electric Lady Studios, founded by Jimi Hendrix and
    apparently still in operation today.

Now, in the course of relating this story, the reporter stated that
Hendrix was the FIRST recording artist to own their own recording
studio. Can that be true? In 50 years of recording, no other artist
built their own studio? Not Les Paul, for example?

Before I ask Copilot I figure I'll ask here. Better odds of a right answer.

You could make an argument for Norman Petty. He owned 7th Street
Studio in Clovis, New Mexico, as part of his independent label,
    Nor-Va-Jak Music in 1957.

    How about Johnny Mercer?

Part owner of Capitol, they must have had their own studio before Norman
    Petty I would think.

If part owner counts, you are correct.

Les Paul DID have his own recording studio of course---started in his

BTW what exactly is this "Co-Pilot" thingy? I keep seeing it mentioned.

If you have a Microsoft PC, it's their AI chatbot, and you can find it
by opening their Microsoft Edge browser. I *believe* you can also
download it as an app on your Apple phone*.

Basically, you can ask it a question and it will answer your question
and show you which webpages it got its answer from. Unlike Google
search, it doesn't (yet) make you scroll through a bunch of ads before
giving you what you asked for. So I like it. But it's far from
infallible, so I find I have to double-check it by going to the websites
it used and seeing if they're reliable.

*I just asked Copilot if it was available for iphones, and it said yes.
It said go to the app store and search for "Microsoft Copilot." There's
    a free version there.

Maybe. But fact is, Electric Ladyland was started from Hendrix, and
his manager Michael Jeffery, buying a night club called "The
Generation" where he used to do gigs. He planned to make it a new club
but Eddie Kramer (session engineer) and Jim Marron (construction
manager) talked him into making it a recording studio.

My dear late friend, Jeff Gutcheon, was in a band that was managed at
the time by Michael Jeffry and I heard all about it from him. He was
in a band at the time called "Jesse's First Carnival."
