    Barbara Dane died by suicide at age 97. I guess that's pretty unique!

    I remember her because I was into folk music in my early teens. She was
    a dedicated Communist, a protege of Pete Seeger, and had a powerful
    voice, good for the protest anthems she liked to sing. I wasn't a fan of
    hers. She was kind of the Ethel Merman of her genre, no subtlety,
    always belted it out. (That's not a slur against Ethel Merman, just
    trying to convey her singing style.)

    Barbara Dane appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959 where she
    sang with Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, the first white female artist
    to do so. In 1965 she sang at Newport with the Chambers Brothers, who
    were still doing gospel then.

    Dane, who had heart failure, died through assisted suicide at her home in Oakland, under the
    provisions of the California End of Life Option Act. She was 97.

    San Francisco Chronicle:

    Surrounded by family and friends, she availed herself of medical aid in dying after a long struggle
    with heart failure, her daughter Nina Menendez told the Chronicle.
