From Roger@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jan 7 06:46:27 2025
    20 FAVE INSTRUMENTAL RECORDS

    TODAY........FROM 1953

    1. NERVOUS MAN NERVOUS – BIG JAY McNEELY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EugfbjUn67g

Despite umpteen chants of the title this is my pick as fave instrumental
of 1953. Terrific rocker on the Federal label

    2. HAWAIIAN BOOGIE – ELMORE JAMES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QiMjApL7mE

A good dose of the usual Elmore guitar magic with solid backing from
the Broomdusters on the Flair label

    3. COUNTRY BOOGIE – ELMORE JAMES
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24_6yGqolVw

Elmore label hops to Checker for his direct followup to “Hawaiian
    Boogie”
above (both were “B” sides on the actual releases)

    4. DON’T HAVE TO HUNT NO MORE – LITTLE WALTER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di4qJmNQo2s

Staying with the Checker label here’s Little Walter blowing that harp
    till
it hurts on my pick as his most fiery instrumental of 1953

    5. CASH BOX BOOGIE – LOWELL FULSON https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guDVk9eCvps&t=47s

Mr Fulson here trying to curry favor with a devious plan cooked up
between Swing Time records and the famous music weekly magazine?

    6. BIG TOWN JUMP – JIMMY WILSON
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPa-ENWXS8s

Energetic piano/guitar/sax pounder on Bob Geddins Big Town label. The
    flip
side of his first record “Tin Pan Alley”

    7. HEAVY JUICE – TINY BRADSHAW
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf79KkukB5A

One of Tiny’s best instrumentals a frantic affair penned by
    Bradshaw,Ralph
Bass and Red Prysock. His first release of 1953 as usual on King
    label.Charted
    #9 BBr&b

    8. NITE TRAIN – RUSTY BRYANT
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea0YYUEY6ug

With his Carolyn Club Band here’s Rusty’s saxy version of the huge Jimmy Forrest hit of the previous year on Carolyn label (re-released as “All
Nite Long” on Dot in 1954)

    9. FATS DOMINO BLUES – FATS DOMINO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLCJKUKgbVE

Recorded 1 June 1953 at J&M Studio New Orleans it’s an unreleased moody
piano piece from the session that produced “Rose Mary”. First appears on the
UK Liberty LP “Rare Dominoes” in 1968

    10. OFF THE WALL – LITTLE WALTER
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bnBhBkFq8I

The haunting followup to #4 above and his second Checker single of 1953. Charted #8 BBr&b (beating the vocal topside “Tell Me Mama” at #10)

    11. BOOGIE UPROAR – CLARENCE “GATEMOUTH” BROWN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkKzSJeRWt0

One of the more memorable Gatemouth Brown instrumentals (followup to
“Dirty Work At The Crossroads”) waxed for Don Robey at Peacock Records.

    12. EASY – JIMMY & WALTER
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3OON4MjGDc

That’s Jimmy De Berry on guitar and Walter Horton on harmonica on a tune
very much resembling “I Almost Lost My Mind”. Very early (and very rare) Sun release

    13. TEXAS HOP – DR ROSS
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA1FoKld0Tw

One man band Dr Isiah Ross rips up the joint with the frantic “Texas
    Hop”
recorded for Sun October 3 1953. Unreleased at the time it first appears
    on
the Charly LP “Union Avenue Breakdown” in 1977

    14. ROLL AND RHUMBA – JIMMY REED
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12O6Ib_NDOs

Fine rockin’instrumental the flipside of Jimmy’s very first record (and
    the
first record on Vee Jay tho it appeared on Chance label too).

    15. LIGHTS OUT – LITTLE WALTER
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEQzZIOOGvw

At a real solid funeral pace Walter blows up a sombre slow harp classic
on Checker that fittingly signals 1953’s end. Flip of the #2 r&b hit “You’re
    So Fine”

    16. WHAT! NO PEARLS – EARL BOSTIC
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXV_WdUNvgU

Just about the best uptempo side to be heard from the saxy Mr Bostic in
1953 with much of his King label material being slow versions of
    standards

    17. JUKE BOX SHUFFLE – LOWELL FULSON https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLIKcIptvaQ

Decent enough outing by Lowell here fittingly with his last outing on
    the Swing
Time label.Despite what the usually reliable Mr daddynap says I have it
    as Sept 53

    18. 3-D – BIG JAY McNEELY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8_wJEbJfpA

Real sax battle going on here betwixt the bros on a pretty wild torrid
    affair
that was the October 1953 direct followup on Federal to our #1 number
    above

    19. DRAGNET – RAY ANTHONY
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB6buYYt-bA

Theme from the great TV detective series starring Jack Webb. One of
    Anthony’s
biggest hits it charted #2 BB pop. Also the only record so far listed to
get a UK release (on Capitol in US and UK) tho UK did not get the TV
    show till 1955

    20. PAUL WESTON – SHANE (THE CALL OF THE FARAWAY HILLS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhx0SyKaoOU

I have a permanent tussle gong on in my head as to which is the greatest
    ever
Western movie. It’s betwixt Alan Ladd’s fabulous “Shane” and the unforgettable
“The Magnificent Seven”---both had great theme tunes and this orchestral piece
from Mister Jo Stafford is a fave of mine. Issued both US and UK on
    Columbia

    BUBBLING UNDER

    21. SATIN DOLL – DUKE ELLINGTON
    22. STEEL GUITAR RAG – HANK GARLAND
    23. LATER – TINY BRADSHAW

    25. SIDE CAR – MAXWELL DAVIS

It's getting too late, I'll go through these tomorrow. Looks like my #1
    for this year is:

Boogie Uproar - Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown

It's the only instrumental on my 1953 list, and it's #424 of 424 songs.
Not a good year for instrumentals IMO.

I knew this was on another label first, but I did not know about the
different title and year. Thanks. I just moved it in my library.

    9. FATS DOMINO BLUES – FATS DOMINO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLCJKUKgbVE

This is probably my second favorite instrumental of the year. It gets a
low 7, but you need a solid 7 to make my year lists.

    12. EASY – JIMMY & WALTER
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3OON4MjGDc

That’s Jimmy De Berry on guitar and Walter Horton on harmonica on a tune very much resembling “I Almost Lost My Mind”. Very early (and very rare) Sun release

I have this, but this video sounds better than my copy, so I just DL'd
    it to make the switch.

the punctuation. No period anymore for DR.?

Not that good, a 4 for me.

This show never played here in England. I never saw it until I caught it
a couple of times on some retro TV channel when I was staying in Philly
    in '76.
It did precisely NOTHING for me and I wondered what all the fuss was

Of course I'm going by what the music sounds like but its closeasthis association with the movie can't be overlooked in this case. OTOH I
    always liked
"Theme From A Summer Place" a lot--but the movie is dreadful. Go figure!

*enhanced* by the emotional feeling it evokes that is unrelated to the
