100 years ago Bill Haley was born (July 6, 1925).

70 years ago, July 1955, "Rock Around The Clock" reached #1 on the
    Billboard Pop chart.

I didn't realize Haley was 30 years old when he became a rock star.

Well, he had a minor hit with "Crazy Man, Crazy" a few years earlier, and had put in a few years as a minor country star, and "Rock Around the Clock" went to #1 only as a re-release. It had been a minor hit the year before, and became a blockbuster because of it's appearence at the beginning of "The Blackboard Jungle."

All true, but I still love this record after 70 years since I first
heard it in the summer of 1955.

"Crazy, Man, Crazy" was more than a minor hit. It got to #12 in a 10
week run. And "Shake, Rattle And Roll" got to #7 in a 27 week run on a
chart that was at the most 30 items at that time. The he had 3 other top
20 hits before "Clock" got to #1. He was a rock star already by the time "Clock" was re-released.

I thought it was well known that Haley was older than most of the other
rock and rollers in that time frame. Chuck Berry was almost 29 already
    when "Maybellene" hit.

So next year will be the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of
Independence and the 100th anniversary of Chuck Berry's birth. That
seems to fit. America and Chuck Berry, both great achievements and
hideous crimes. With the hamburgers frying on an open grill night and day.

    Great ending quote.
