#1 I Made It With A Bagel And Cream Cheese - SuLu
It's well known that the year-end countdowns are calculated based on a
point system applied to the countdowns during the year. For example,
every time a song is #1 it gets 10 points, #2 9 points, etc. down to #10
1 point. Those are summed and ordered to make the year-end countdown.
Inevitably there are ties. In the 70s he would announce them as tied,
but for decades he's been breaking the ties himself by his sense of
where they belong, and likely will do that again this year.
I've been using something more definitive than just a sense of what's
more popular. In descending order of priority, I used these criteria
this year, which are basically what I've used in the past:
1. number of appearances on the top ten
2. highest position on the top ten
3. number of times in highest position
4. number of non-top ten appearances on the show (not counting
flashbacks)
5. number of flashback show appearances (it's debatable whether this
should even be used to help break ties)
6. if song is recent
7. consistency of song or artist being on the show (added to break tie
between Monty Pyton and Piero Umiliani)
8. national attention garnered by song or artist (added to break tie
between Mojo Nixon and Bob Newhart)
I've also thought about assigning point values to the above items, only
to be used when there are ties, so that if they meet multiple conditions
they might end up higher than something that only meets one condition.
In particular, doing so this year could elevate the positions of
"Polkamania" and "Lower Decks Keep It Movin'" so might be worth doing.
