• Power on 6 prong

From sticks@21:1/5 to All on Sat Oct 19 15:38:28 2024
Got my baseplates on and both the brake breakaway switch and the 6 prong
    plug. Quite the job.

Everything seems to be working, except the power wire I put in to charge
the battery. So I checked my F-150 and the RV, and I'll be damned if
neither of them are showing any power there either on their respective 7 prongs. Other lights show voltage. I tried with both a volt meter and
a test light. I must be missing something somewhere. My truck seems to
have a wire going to it. The RV has a bunch of wires. I should be able
to go to ground on the plug and then the power and see voltage right?

OK, all is good. Found out on the F-150 you have to put in two fuses
for it to get power to the back. I don't know why they don't do it by
default. Instead, I put the fuse in the Bronco in-line fuse holder on
the power wire and it showed voltage at the 6 prong plugin. At least I
know it's all wired correctly and working.

Now I just gotta figure out the RV on whether or not it has power at the
7 prong. That's that crazy Mercedes shit where it has to "sense" a
vehicle before it sends power. It can wait till tomorrow.

damn. That fits with my experience that "smart" things piss me off much
    more often than they help

When I drove it home from the dealership earlier in the week, I must
have hit the wrong button on the wheel somewhere that shortened the
distance where it would slow you down from anything ahead of you from 4
spots to two. Some guy was turning left in front of me on a 45 mph road
and he had to be 100 feet ahead of me and was easily going to be out of
the way. The damn thing tried to come to a complete stop almost.
Aggravating as hell. I gotta remember to turn that off every time I guess.

Theory don't mean squat if it don't work.

Have you checked it with the ignition on?

Hooked it up to the RV this morning. All lights work properly. This is
good news since some people report problems with LED lights working on
rigs with this CANBUS system. Good there.

Power wire still showed zero voltage, but there were signs of life. Had
the wife hit the brakes and turn signals and it registered slight bumps
of voltage (0.01-0.03). I've read a couple articles where the CANBUS
only sends power when it is demanded. Still don't know if this is true
    on the power/positive lead.

Wished I had thought of it before she had to go shopping, but I should
have turned the lights on the TOAD and see if that gave any draw. When
the warden gets back, I'll give that a try. I'll probably also install
the kit for power at the back of the F-150 and see how that handles it.
I'm pretty sure a 2011 Ford does have the CANBUS system in some manner,
but I don't think it would be as "smart" in 2011 as these newer systems.
