  • 1 month old kittens

    At lat, a stray young felame cat brought her litter to safety, on mostly white and a grey tabby with curls. Both kittens are 1 motnh old. The mother brought them to our place for safety! The mother is allowing us the play with the kittens. This young mother cat is a bit timid approaching us at times.

    How do we err on the side of caution to help out
    this family. Also our 2 male cats show not signs of jealousy so far.

    A few things:
    If the males are intact, the kittens will be in danger immediately upon when she next comes into heat. And they will know it well before you do.
    If the males are not intact, there should be no issue one way or the other. Consider a calcium supplement for the nursing mother, especially as the kittens get larger. Consult your vet on what is best.
    Consider feeding the mother a "kitten" food -which is generally higher in protein and fat than standard foods - for as long as she is nursing and a little beyond.
    This will also help the kittens wean to a kitten food.

    And, in general:
    Play with the kittens several times per day.
    Try to keep the mother-cat involved with the play - a laser-toy is good for this.
    Touch, but do not hold or lift the mother cat as much as she will tolerate. Carry "high-value" treats at all times, and reinforce 'good touch' with them constantly.
    Try to get her to come to you for these treats. This will happen eventually. And, in a pinch, tincture-of-Valerian is a sovereign attractant and relaxant for cats. I have used it with universal success on nearly feral rescues to get them past the initial terror and lashing out. Your cat is clearly not feral, so it may be even
    more useful.
    And, you might also try a Feliway diffuser where they spend the most time.

    I would suggest the term "wild" vs. "feral", as if she were truly feral, you would never have seen her in the first place.

    You might try the Feliway, and you might try the tincture of Valerian - the first calms cats in general, the second is an analog of valium for cats, with shades of strong catnip. However, unlike valium, you cannot overdose.

    A happy ending to this story as winter sets in in Alberta Canada.

    All 3 kitten have been adopted with good homes!

    Now for the mother cat to get rescued!
