• Back to a Windy Morro Bay

It was a beautiful day down at Morro Bay today, except for some hefty wind. Fortunately the Air 2S was able to handle it.

    Another lovely interlude, SD. Thanks.

Now I know this has been discussed in an earlier post, but the link has done much the same in not running when clicked on directly.
    PC: Win10Pro
    Firefox:
    a) Click on link - get a new blank tab. No video or any other action happening.
    b) Right click on link and select 'Copy Link'; open new tab manually and paste copied link - opens up normally and starts playing

    Chrome: (same PC)
    a) Click on link - get error message - "This site can’t be reached The web page at https://photos.smugmug.com...202022-1920.mp4 might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE". At least a bit
    more informative than Firefox above.
    b) Right click on link and select 'Copy Link Address'; open new tab manually and paste copied link - opens up normally and starts playing

MSFT Edge: (Not surprisingly, much the same as Chrome above)

Mr Google was not my friend in any meaningful way. :-(

    'Curiouser and curiouser!', cried Alice.

You and Whisky-dave seem to be the only folks experiencing this particular issue. You should be able to click/double click on the link, and the file should open in your default browser.

I have been using SmugMug for several years as a convenient means for sharing some of my image, and/or video work. Obviously the link I share directs to the SmugMug server, and I have no idea of how that effects how it delivers to your desktop.

I also use Apple’s iCloud Drive which allows recipients to download the file, which in the case of some of the video files can be 3+GB. My other sharing tool is Adobe CC Files.

Personally I am using macOS, and Safari which should have no effect on whatever combination you use.

Maybe that's the key, firefox isn't set as my default browser, but clicking on the click does open up a blank tab in firefox, so doesn't even attempt
to open the file in my default browser (Safari).
Also right clicking and saving the file just saves a mp4 file of Zero bytes.

I have been using SmugMug for several years as a convenient means for sharing some of my image, and/or video work. Obviously the link I share directs to the SmugMug server, and I have no idea of how that effects how it delivers to your desktop.

I suspect smugmug is the cause.

As a test maybe if you could place a small mp4 (for test purposes) on icloud or CC we could test this theory .
Last time I couldn't downloard a full res. file from smugmig but could from your icloud.

Which is why I think smugmug might be the cause.
But at least there's a work around whatever the cause.

I also use Apple’s iCloud Drive which allows recipients to download the file, which in the case of some of the video files can be 3+GB. My other sharing tool is Adobe CC Files.

Should , in theory , well I work with students so know what these words really mean ;-)

I wouldn’t expect that to work as it is intended to be a secure https link to

You and Whisky-dave seem to be the only folks experiencing this particular issue. You should be able to click/double click on the link, and the file should open in your default browser.
Agreed. Now that I've found a work-around, it's no longer a problem (I get to see some lovely CA coastal scenery - please keep it up!) but the IT part of my brain is bemused as to why.

In addition to the previous tests, I've now tried it on:
An ASUS laptop (Win 7) with F/Fox
An HP Laptop (Win 10) with F/Fox
A virtual machine (Win 10 on UNRAID) with both F/Fox and Chrome
A virtual machine (Linux Mint on UNRAID) with F/Fox
A Samsung tablet (Android 11) with DuckDuckGo's browser

Same result for all. Regrettably, I don't have either a Mac or a Hackintosh to try it with.

Seeing it's just me and Whisky-Dave, the only conclusion I can come to is that the bug only triggers when accessed by those in Commonwealth countries. :-)

As it's still raining/blowing/flooding outside (more than half our annual rainfall in 4 days!), I may keep chipping away and see if I get some sort of lightbulb moment down the line.

    Cheers,
    Magani

I mentioned this to Dave, but when you click on the link, does it appear in
the address bar of the browser exactly as it appears in the post you are clicking from? If not, then something you use is breaking the URL. If it is identical, that is the reason I mentioned DNS. If your ISP is not translating the link properly, and something Dave said made me think that, then maybe the DNS they and you are using is not so great, and you can just switch to
another. Pick one of the top two in this link (if you can open it): https://www.techradar.com/news/best-dns-server

Yes that works using the college wireless eduroam network,
using google groups just like I do on the iMac.

If you have, and you can, I suggest you restart your personal iMac in

I won't bother doing that too much hasslef or little to no gain.

You and Whisky-dave seem to be the only folks experiencing this particular
issue. You should be able to click/double click on the link, and the file
should open in your default browser.
    Agreed. Now that I've found a work-around, it's no longer a problem (I get
    to
see some lovely CA coastal scenery - please keep it up!) but the IT part of
my brain is bemused as to why.

Regrettably, I don't have either a Mac or a Hackintosh
    to try it with.

Seeing it's just me and Whisky-Dave, the only conclusion I can come to is that the bug only triggers when accessed by those in Commonwealth countries.
    -)

As it's still raining/blowing/flooding outside (more than half our annual rainfall in 4 days!), I may keep chipping away and see if I get some sort of
    lightbulb moment down the line.

    Cheers,
    Magani
I mentioned this to Dave, but when you click on the link, does it appear in the address bar of the browser exactly as it appears in the post you are clicking from? If not, then something you use is breaking the URL. If it is identical, that is the reason I mentioned DNS. If your ISP is not translating
the link properly, and something Dave said made me think that, then maybe the
DNS they and you are using is not so great, and you can just switch to another. Pick one of the top two in this link (if you can open it): https://www.techradar.com/news/best-dns-server

That link opens fine and fast as, as fast as a priest in a chior boy.
Problem is I can't change the DNS server such things are locked down by the college IT bods
as they don't want students or anyone else messing with such things , this reduces they chances of teh college being hacked or taken down.
Bit it starts with 138.37. same as my IP address and there are two DNS servers in the list both 138.37 but the rest is differnt

    search domain also locked eecs.qmul.ac.uk

You glossed over one important question: when you click on a link, does it appear in the browser address bar exactly as the link you clicked on in the post? If not, then the link is breaking somewhere after you click on it. If
it is the same, didn’t you say somewhere that you saw an error message that the browser couldn’t find the address of the link? That is why I brought up DNS. And if this is happening only at work, why are you bothering with it? There’s nothing you can do about it. And that DNS you saw might be only the IP of the school’s gateway, not the actual DNS being used.

It's no hassle at all! :-D
Just restart your iMac whilst holding down the shift key.
It shouldn't take more than a minute or so.
(make sure you can see ''Safe Boot' in red text in the top right-hand

two links above this one for any stray spaces in the address bar after you clicked on the link?

If I copy and paste the link into a new tab, it always works. Even savageduck's new clip around the dry landscape works if I do that. It just doesn't work when I click on the link directly.
The link above is broken because the news group editor truncated it and added a CRLF. On my original post it was all in one line.

    Agreed
Obviously the file is there, and again, if I copy the URL and paste it into a
new tab, it all works as advertised.

I've also tried using my phone as a hotspot (as suggested above) and
confirmed that even with a new IP/DNS resolver, I get the same results.

I hate to ask this, but did you turn the wifi on your phone OFF before you made it a hotspot? If not, all you did was use your home wifi, but with trip
    through the phone first.
Good thinking! That is quite possible.

Yes. My phone does that automatically. You cannot have a hotspot and WiFi at the same time.

A (very) mad stab in the dark here, but is there any one else in this group
who is outside the USA and not having this issue (ie: anyone who isn't either
    Whisky-Dave or me)?

That’s why I tried the VPN set to the UK, but I don’t know if that was any sort of valid test of anything.
I'm in Devon, England and the links *DO* work for me.

Good to know it's not country specific then.

There's ALWAYS a reason for failure. Be persistent and you'll find it!

    Good luck!

    Thanks. :-)

You glossed over one important question: when you click on a link, does
    it
appear in the browser address bar exactly as the link you clicked on in
    the
    post?

On FF: New Tab opens, with 'about:blank' in the address bar.

On Chrome: New tab opens with the following in the address bar: https://photos.smugmug.com/Air-2S-Work-2022/Air2S-Work-2022/i-32KTCR5/0/db
    3539

or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE

When I click on either of the above links, they both work, even when I switch
my VPN to a server in the UK.
Both of those links work for me too.
I also tried Pale Moon (I think it's based on FF) and got:-

    File not found

The link above is broken because the news group editor truncated it and added a CRLF. On my original post it was all in one line.

If the exact same characters appear in the link whether you click on the link or paste it in, than nothing I’ve said so far is useful. The only remaining thing I can think of is that browsers might treat pasted and clicked links differently from a security standpoint, and might block some clicked links based on your security settings, but ignore pasted links.

    Agreed

Yes. My phone does that automatically. You cannot have a hotspot and WiFi at the same time.

That’s odd. I am talking about hotspot, and not tethering, and I don’t
know if it makes a difference, but my phone, if connected to wifi, will
become a hotspot and just pass my home wifi through. They can both be on at
the same time. I must manually turn off the wifi or I end up with the same IP address on my PC whether on hotspot or direct wifi. You also must make sure
you don’t have an ethernet cable plugged into your PC, or it overrides any wifi.

It opens up a new new window, with the title :Blank, with a black screen.

If not, then the link is breaking somewhere after you click on it. If
it is the same, didn’t you say somewhere that you saw an error message that
the browser couldn’t find the address of the link?.

    No error reported

That is why I brought up
DNS. And if this is happening only at work, why are you bothering with it? There’s nothing you can do about it. And that DNS you saw might be only the
IP of the school’s gateway, not the actual DNS being used.

true I guess that down to security too.

    Version now 97.0.2 (64-bit)

think it was 97.0.1 (64-bit), thought I made a note of it, but where who knows.

As everything now seems to be OK at work.
clicking the smugmug link opens, and when right clicking it does too.
Except with open in new tab when it stated auto play blocked.

when I right click and open in "new tab" or open in "new window" I get blank aka SFA

When I open in a "new private window" it works opens up in the same size window and plays fine.
    So maybe a cookie problem.

I'm guessing that will the same at work, but will have to wait until Monday for that.
    So sort of sorted.
Have you considered updating your iMac to macOS Monterey?

My personal one no not yet haven;t seen any real advantage in doing so
My one at work well it;s a mid 2011 and it;s at it's most recent you can have with high Sierra.
    10.13.6

I understand the limitations of running an obsolete computer! ;-)

Maybe. Maybe Apple itself changed something too.

clicking the smugmug link opens, and when right clicking it does too.

It's frustrating when one cannot pinpoint the reason for such a major
    change.

I'd try scanning with Malwarebytes - the free facility.

Except with open in new tab when it stated auto play blocked.

Sorry. I cannot help with that.

It works just fine for me - now on Version 12.2.1

You could have your machine 'up and running' with it before lunchtime! ;-)

Last time I updated from sierra to high S. it took more than 45mins.

It will take far longer than that to upgrade to macOS Monterey! ;-)

Depends what you mean by obsolete, I still prefer simcity 2000 to the later versions.
I sometimes play a bit of starcraft on my G4 tower running OS9.2
and I'd like to resurrect 3 G3 computers the first iMacs to play networked carmaggedon on,
you can get it for the the iPhone and iPad but it's pretty difficult to control.

But I doubt my G3s will support ultimaker cura for 3D printing , doubt they'll be much good
    for social media stuff either.

Nah I think it was FF, as I do manual updates and firefox was the only think I was prompted
to do restart for, I think it went from 97.0.1 (64-bit) to 97.0.2 (64-bit) released on 5th March.

Obsolete is defined in English dictonaires, I'm not letting Apple tell me what it means.
