It's a pre-production lens and the article says nothing about using a
fresnel lens (standard practice in tele prime lenses but not in zoom
    lenses).

The Z mount with its smaller flange gap might make the lower weight
    possible.

It's still a hulk of a lens. Try carrying that with you for hours in a rainforest.

Dunno. Would that actually be a problem if the performance is what they
claim ? Or maybe even a benefit ?

The previous model was designed in 2014. That's about eight years of
advances in lens design plus the advantages of Z-mount.

As the reviewer says, how can designers *not* include an Arca dovetail
in the foot. First thing I did with my Fuji 100-400 was to buy a
    replacement foot.

And as the reviewer also stressed - it is a pre-production sample.

Hopefully in the production unit they would include this feature without detracting from the vanilla mount, which could be considered 'basic' for
    this level of lens ....

Glass is the major weight in a lens and you need a front lens and adjacent elements of about six inches across. Dense flint lenses
and a front element group maybe 3 inches thick means heavy.

Arca dovetails don't suit everybody. I've got about 6 devices with
    Manfrotto.
