• Has Usenet and r.p.d. Reached EOL

From Savageduck@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 4 12:07:24 2022
It seems to me that UseNet, including many of the NGs I subscribe to,
and have enjoyed for many years have reached their end of life. They
have been destroyed by trolls, and flame warriors, who have little to
no concern for the mandates of specific news groups. If their goal has
been to destroy UseNet they appear to be succeeding.

All the past aspects of this group, from information on all things
digital photography, to asking for, and/or providing advice,
constructive criticism, or just sharing an image, or video are a thing
of the past. Posts made in good faith become the start of OT trolling,
or the continuation of a flame war that is no sincere response to the
    OP.

So for me the time has come to take a hiatus from rec.photo.digital,
and several other NGs, and find myself some other distraction. Many of
those who I enjoyed interacting with are no longer here, and I
understand why. I will probably check in from time to time to see if
there is any change to the destructive trend.

    Mr Duck,
while I agree with your sentiments and conclusions, your leaving will make this a less enjoyable and informative space. Another UseNet group I'm in has much the same problems with some Richard Crania (euphemism), there are others whose comments I enjoy.
    Likewise here.

I've just returned from 3 weeks vacation (if you can have a vacation while being retired) in a remote area away from any mobile / internet conection. Upon getting home yesterday and firing up the PCs, I note there's more of the same old same old:
bickering, points-scoring, nay-saying etc on various fora. I just cheerfully ignore them and move on to those whose opinions I value (yours being one!). Life's too short and always remember: "Nil Bastardum Carborundum".

If you do decide to wander off for a while, please come back from time to time, especially if you have more drone footage. :-)

Now to process the ~2000 shots I took (it was an exceptionally photogenic location).

    Cheers,
    Magani

Well, several NGs to which I subscribe are not even visited by trolls or spammers anymore. r.p.d. is one of the few NGs which still have some
real posts every now and then.

I agree that Usenet is slowly but surely fadin' away.

Some newsgroups have been dead for years (such as the one
    for The Band).

The Mac groups have very little of interest... well, to be
honest, NOTHING of interest any more.

I only keep about 4 groups "on the list" any more, and can
go through them in a few minutes. Often, to just "mark read"
    and move on.

Even the binary newsgroups seem to be withering. I monitor a
few of the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.xxx groups, hardly any
    posts these days.

Kind of sad, because in these times of "website censorship",
UseNet is one of the few "free places" left on the net.
Could that be why some are trying to "destroy" it...?

nobody is trying to destroy anything. the reality is that people don't
like nor want a free for all, where spammers, trolls, idiots, etc.
    thrive.

It would be a pity to miss your insights. A simple killfile list here removes much of the objectionable matter. Perhaps you might reconsider?

I think you are right when finding an interesting discussion is like
looking for a needle in a haystack the group the newsgroup decays. One I particularly miss is "roff" where the key players went to facebook years
ago. Now "rpd" and "urg" are the ones I still go to first and you can

I too have been off of usenet a lot recently. I don't think I fired up
my client since some time in March, and only checked in a few days ago
to relate a weird problem on the mac systems group. No reply - the
    usual characters seem absent.

As to usenet, it's been in decline for 10 years (20 maybe - depends on
    your perspective I guess).

    1. Many ISP's stopped supporting it a long time ago.
    .. so,
.. use free, public usenet, or
.. use commercial paid for usenet

    2. Web based alternates.
.. more appeal to people with fewer computer skills.
    .. more "social" in character

    3. Social media
    .. needs no more comment

    4. Photography NG's
.. less interest as people are using D/SLR's less.
    .. film even less so.
.. many other online (web) forums

Check in in a few months, 'duck.

The camera club I belonged to died due to lack of new members old members squabbling about how large the titles should be on the boarder how
large the boarder should be, price of membership, the location of the club , outings ... defining the groups for compitions as beginers or advanced
and who should be in each, should sepai and other tones be eleigable as black and white or monochrome group, minium soize and maxuim size of prints.

Things change and yes facebook is more convenient, and more easier to keep spam down via moderators or more accurately administrators
and membership or certain groups. Which you can't do with usenet.
So FB can quite easily replace usenet.
Someone (not mentioning anyone) could set up an RPD group and be an administator(s) with invite only or other methods
of restrictions. Could do the same with flikr if it's just only the photo images.

Most of the usenet groups I was on in the mid 90s hardly get any relivant posts perhaps 1 a month now.
Most are just ads for meds so I visit about once a month, most of the people went to live journel and then to myspace
then to facebook, some to instagram other tiktoc.

It's just like real life in that if you don;t want to know people you don't have to.
It's a little like law and order which savageduck knows all about, before such things we had religion.

Some people require special filters and overly complex filters to cope with life.
Whereas I seem to just be able to ignore stuff I don't like.
Rather like watching the platinum jubilee over the weekend TV on a bit if I'm not interested in go do something else,
I part painted the garden fence took apart my non working CCTV camera fast forwarding through some of the celibrations
watching other bits, going on facebook, going to email, changing channels, watching a bit of pawn stars, BGT,
2nd coat on fence. Think I took one photo of a ginger cat over the long weekend.

Yes, that's unfortunately been the trend over the past decade.
Another big contributor has been that the non-USENET alternatives
have sucked off the inflow of new participants, so as a group, we lack
new blood to keep things engaging - - we're all growing older & dying off.

Hopefully, one can keep in touch through some of the other venues,
such as FB. Even though I've only rarely commented on your drone
videos, I've been enjoying them - largely as respites from work, as well
as in the whole CoVid lockdown which has largely prevented vacations.

Just back from one myself .. finally .. so I really need to make an effort
to reciprocate with some of the UW pics that I took. I'll also have to find out if my model of UW strobe is repairable, or if it is DOA and I'm in for
$1K to buy a replacement ... based on the symptoms, my guess is that
the main capacitor blew inside of its housing.
