    https://exiftool.org

Perhaps you can advise of an alternative?

    Thanks if you can/will.

I just checked in to see if UseNet is still a chaotic shit show, and it
is. So you might see again in another 6 months. However, for folks not
prepared to involve themselves with the archane operation of exiftool,
it is the backbone of several good software options. I regularly use

Laurence Gatehouse asked ...... on December 9, 2022 at 7:59 pm

How capable is Xprotect and the rest of the Apple security suite, in
your opinion? I realise that it is aimed differently but will it, or is intended to, replace such things as Virus checkers or MalwareBytes? This
is probably a big question. Thanks for your always interesting posts.

Howard Oakley responded ..... on December 9, 2022 at 10:52 pm

No one knows. I don’t know how capable third-party products are either,
nor the likelihood of any particular threat.
I think Apple’s intent is that for ‘ordinary’ Mac users who are acting fairly sensibly, built-in protection should provide a high level of
defence against all the more likely malware. For those at risk from
state actors, for instance, they need to be augmented, hence Apple’s new option to block more common means of entry. I think those folk need wise
and specific security support. But for the great majority of us,
provided we keep macOS and these tools up to date, our risks should be
    very low.
XProtect itself, with its Yara file, is fairly basic, and its efficacy
depends on the malware. But XProtect Remediator is quite different, and
should be considerably better, more on a par with the better third-party products.
    Howard.
