My Olympus E500 is going well but its batteries are not.
Can I run a
stationary camera with a DC transformer?

Many DSLRs have kluge battery pack substitutes available with leads to external PSUs.
Not sure about your model.Try googling harder than I could be bothered
to ...
Alternatively you could risk stripping a dud battery pack, attaching
leads, and hooking up to an external supply - but not a project for the novice.

Might find it difficult to get a suitable DC transformer as you need 7.4V , 5, 6 & 9V are easy to find 6V might work, you might get away with a 9V and use 2 1N4001 type diodes in series
with the +ve lead but it;s tricky, and it also means your camera isn't excalty portable any more
as you'd need to be near a power socket.
The E500 is a little old now is it really worth the effort ?
I'd just buy a new battery if I wanted to use the camera for a few more years.

Agreed.
But he did say it was statically-mounted, presumably an old camera
assigned for some special purpose...

Yes, Ive set it up on a tripod and with a timed-shutter gadget to take
shots every 10min of the coffee shop over the road, with a long-range
lens.

Could also be illegal, as it's not even legal (UK) to have a cctv camera overlooking someone elses property
although it's usually ignored unless there's a complaint

More accurately, the customers of the shop are all sitting/standing
outside. I get a good sample of fashions hairstyles and footware.
It's a tough job but someone has to do it!
