    Must be fake!

Not sure what's so amazing about the original picture , and
Any sensible person would would wear such a safety thing given the option, but then again you wouldn't get me up there even with one

I dunno.. somehow I just love pictures with a visual pattern in both dark on light
background and light on dark background variations.

It's a great image, but I am not sure I understand how the effects arise
    unless it has been photoshopped.

And once that is the case, maybe the "sun" has been added as well as the annular red region where the rigging has become washed out. Interesting
that the sun has been cut off by the mast at the right, and the sailor
is not quite central in the sun. That might suggest that it's not a
composite. But I still think the rigging has been airbrushed out.

I just wish people would be honest about composite images, rather than
implying that they have incredible skill in getting components
positioned exactly right, and also correct exposure over the whole frame.

And I don't have a problem with a bit of artistic license, like removing distractions such as power lines, or tweaking brightness, colour, or
    contrast across the frame.

I do wonder why the area of the sun blocks out details
of the rigging of the ship.
It's hard to find images closely resembling it with a something silhouetted against
    the setting or rising sun.

I think the appearance of the sun can vary quite dramatically depending on atmospheric conditions.

I prefer the clear outlines of the figures in the NG picture. I think the outlines are the
whole point of silhouetting subjects, so then it's kind of critical to get the exposure
right to obtain crisp outlines. Perhaps it requires foggy weather to ensure the light
of the sun is somewhat attenuated.
