Zumspot YSF/FT70
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:48 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/shoich/zumspot_ysfft70/
Something I learned today setting up a customer’s Zumspot. We got it all set-up, he could connect to WIRES through the Zumspot, because the Zumspot
was already listening to the selected group (channel) and his radio was correctly set to the transmit frequency of the Zumspot. The radio could
connect by “F + AMS”. The Radio would transmit but the zumspot would never acknowledge his transmission. What WAS wrong in his Yaesu FT70D was Menu
item #62. It was set to Narrow Deviation. It needs to set to “WIDE”. I duplicated the same issue with my radio and his problem is solved.
Just wanted to share this with others just in case you are having the same issue. 😊 submitted by /u/Naturist02

High Elevation repeaters in the Midwest

So I want to play a game of “What’s the most distant 2 meter repeater net that I can check into?”
For reference, I’m in eastern Iowa. With the 150W amplifier that I’m getting, and a decent yagi, do you guys have any leads on what might be
good repeaters to try? submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Is it possible to tell the time and a year by listening to radio waves?
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:36 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/shbgea/is_it_possible_to_tell_the_time_and_a_year_by/
What the title asks. Im sorry if this question doesnt belong here. Please redirect me elsewhere if it doesnt.
I once spent quite a lot of time listening to various recordings of UVB-76
(The Buzzer) on YouTube, and there were two things that have fascinated me
ever since I read the comments under one of the videos.
In that video, there was a recording of UVB-76 allegedly from 1976. One guy
was able to tell the time of the recording, saying that it was recorded at
7ish p.m. American time, which the original uploader confirmed. Another guy confirmed that, judging by the airwaves, the recording was indeed from
before 1983. He said something to the effect of "A major change in the
radio waves occurred in 1983," although he never went on to explain that statement.
My questions are obvious: How is it possible to tell the time of the day
and determine the decade in which a radio recording was made? How is it
done? Are there some specific things in the waves to pay attention to? Were those guys being honest, to begin with?

Adding BB7v counterpoise/ground plane?
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 11:33 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/shp8lc/adding_bb7v_counterpoiseground_plane/
I’m new to both ham and HF especially so please bare with me… but I got a Diamond BB7v since that’s all I can fit right now in my current QTH. I know it’s a compromise and when I move I’ll get something better. But for now, I was wondering if adding some type of ground plane or counterpoise will help
my problems with the antenna. I have it mounted to a fiberglass mast 20 ft
up and using 60 ft of lmr400, but I’m getting really high SWR over 5 and can’t seem to pick up anything on HF bands at all :/ (I’ve ordered a tuner and waiting for it to come in, but don’t want to rely solely on that to fix the problem). I’ve been doing some reading and have a general idea but
since I haven’t found an exact answer and my questions are sort of specific
I thought I’d ask here. I was wondering if adding some type of ground plane or counterpoise system would help to improve things, and if so, how exactly
can I go about doing that? I have no experience building antennas and just
want something that will work for now to get on HF. Thanks! submitted

Antenna Base (PL259, N, vs SMA)

Im in need of a mobile antenna base but Id like something I can use with my current radio that has a PL259 connector or something eventually with my
future radio Id like to purchase which has an N. (2m/70cm)
What is my best route to be able to accommodate this? Just buy PL259 and
use adapter or is SMA a better route for adapters?

Rav 4 Hybrid install question
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:56 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sh8yc4/rav_4_hybrid_install_question/
Hello everyone!
As the title suggests Im going to be installing a Kenwood TM-V71A in my
2021 Rav 4 Hybrid fairly soon. Ive been doing some research on how to
install the radio and ive come across one point that is causing me some confusion.
The instructions say connect negative to battery negative post, but the
online guides ALL say always connect the negative lead to the chassis - NOT
the negative terminal on the battery. The reasons for this make perfect
sense and id do that. . . except my 12V battery is in the rear, and there doesnt seem to be anything dedicated to this purpose near the battery.
There are a couple 4 gauge wires that run direct to the battery but that
seems to be it for connections back there.
There IS a bolt on the battery hold down strap that connects to the
aluminum chassis - should I use that?
Hoping someone else on here has done this before in this or a similar
vehicle. 73! submitted by /u/survivalguy87

Best HT radio with widest reception and good battery life? I'd pick the
TH-F6A but the only one for sale is over 400 bucks.
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 03:18 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/shfh1o/best_ht_radio_with_widest_reception_and_good/
I am looking for a hand held radio that can receive on as many frequencies
and bands as possible, especially short wave. But I would also hope it has
a good battery.
The TH-F6a seems the absolute king of reception, but its no longer for sale aside from one on eBay being sold for over 400 dollars.
I have a FT 60R and I like it for communication, but it has limited
reception. I want a HT I can take with me hiking or backpacking that can
pick everything up from shortwave to SSB to military. submitted by /u/BROWNPILLED-2020

frequency range, and according to manuals ive found online it uses FM for 25-30Mhz which is no good as i want to listen to CB AM ~27Mhz. Any good alternatives? submitted by /u/MNNGRFA

Could i use a Magnetic Amplifier instead of a transistor in an oscillator
for a transmitter?
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:20 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sh81gi/could_i_use_a_magnetic_amplifier_instead_of_a/
I am trying to build a radio transmitter that will be able to transmit sine waves in the LF spectrum, its a low frequency,i know, but it will be just a telegraph that will send a simple code to my RC ship which im building, now
the thing is,i want to make it without store bought components, just diy
post apocalyptic style components, and making a mag amp is much easier than making a transistor, and also it will work on a very high voltage(were
talking kilovolts!) and im not sure transistors that can withstand such
voltage even exist.
Is this even realistically possible?if yes,any tips?
If i succeed i will definitely post it on here.
This is the simplest mag amp circuit.
Theres also this kind,im not sure of its advantages over the first one
though. submitted by /u/ZatannaIzSwag

Help to validate power output
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:00 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/shgfal/help_to_validate_power_output/
Hi, I have an Icom 701 and seems is not putting as much power as it should,
but also I’m not sure how reliable are my measurement tools.
I’m operating on the 10 meter band and my CB type SWR meter gets me some 75 watts on the dummy load (not bad) however the ATU100 tuner when connected instead of the SWR meter, and with all parameters reset) marks 36 watts.
The rig meter has Ic and Vc readings and those multiplied give me 140
watts. I have been told that efficiency of the output stage of a
transceiver is around 50% so that would be 70 watts. Close to the CB meter. Other than that I can see the rig consumes some 170 watts from the external PSU.
Of course the easy thing would be to get a good known power meter… but in
the meanwhile what do you think is the actual power output? 🙃
Thanks

Does anybody have any tricks to fix up loose VFO knobs?
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:59 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sh0obx/does_anybody_have_any_tricks_to_fix_up_loose_vfo/
Pretty much summed up in the title, I have a used FT-757 thats in really
good condition overall, the only issue with it is that the previous owner
has done something to make the VFO knob loose and there does not seem to be
any nut or fastener like on my previous radios which would secure the VFO,
the previous owner seemed to try and remedy it with vaseline but that only causes it to slip, not sure what the train of thought there was hehe.
Anyway, any tricks or help would be appreciated.
