Help finding a radio and antenna for my car

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 07:06 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sqthun/help_finding_a_radio_and_antenna_for_my_car/

So as the title says, I need some help finding a radio and an antenna for
my car. I must add that I havent used a radio in something like 2 years so
Im quite out of date with current equipment, and Ive never looked into
radios that can go in cars before.
So if anyone can help me with suggesting an affordable radio and antenna
(and whatever else I might need) I would be extremely grateful. Im hoping
to keep cost down as much as possible, but I dont want to go for the
absolute cheapest as some decent range on the radio would be quite nice (if possible), realistically I can afford between £200 and £300 for this.
For reference I hold an intermediate amateur radio license in the UK

Ive blown the valves on my Kenwood TS830S (I think. There was a bright
flash of light and a bad smell when I turned them on.) Ive got spares but,
how do I go about replacing them? Opening the case up theres a big "DANGER: High Voltage" sticker on the valve box so I thought Id ask before going any further. submitted by /u/2D0XPS

    Antenna Farm Suggestions Needed

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 07:22 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sqtt2y/antenna_farm_suggestions_needed/

Im finally getting around to indulging a long standing latent interest into amateur radio. New to the hobby, but not to physics, please let me know
what you think the best approach for a newbie would be with the following constraints.
My 0.3 acre lot is sloped. From the top corner of the lot, four 70 trees, spaced 9 apart go down one property line. The trees have about 3 of open
space on all sides before coming in contact with the city street, my
driveway, or the property line, making radials a challenge. As tall as the trees sound, the hill in question crests 40 from the base of these trees. A friend of mine is an arborist and can mount pulleys on each tree. We rarely
get any wind to speak of, but when we do, these pines sway enough to make horizontal lines less than practical.
Please suggest how a new ham could utilize the four trees for more casual
use with an eye to DX. CW is interesting, but that will be after a few
years of SSB. I enjoy making things, and making antennas would be fun for
me. Ill buy black coated copperweld steel for the radiating elements.
My first thought is simply to put center fed resonant vertical dipoles in
each tree with a remote switch at the base. Seems like selecting bands far enough out of tune, and running one dipole per each side of each tree with
a common feed per tree could cover 8 bands on a 4 way switch. Plenty of
bands to learn on, and could grow over time. My concern is the feed line running half way up the dipole on the opposite side of the tree from the radiating element. The ARRL antenna book seems not to address the topic,
but Ive not been through every word of it.
My thought for a first antenna would be an 80m folded dipole, to hit many
bands with the odd harmonics. Then, add bands to other trees.
Please pick this idea apart an let me know if you have better ideas.
    thanks,

"Nearby Repeater" Function on HTs besides Icom

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 03:50 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sqdbhd/nearby_repeater_function_on_hts_besides_icom/

Recently sold my FT-400 that I have in my traveling van solely for the “nearby repeater” function of the Icom 5100A. It’s a pretty neat feature and I’m really enjoying it. I’m looking for a new HT and curious if any other manufacturers are doing anything like that with any HTs besides Icoms ID-51/52. Looks like the 51/52 and the TH-D74 may but am I missing anyone
    else?
I feel like with integrated GPS in so many HTs now manufacturers are really missing an opportunity. It’s so nice being able to hit the local repeaters regardless of where you are with having to program every offset, freq, then remember what location they were for. submitted by /u/MTMicroAdventures

SWR of my HF tuner on 20m responding very favourably to hand touching the insulated inductor coil I wound. What is happening? How do I replicate this with circuitry?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 01:41 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sqae53/swr_of_my_hf_tuner_on_20m_responding_very/

I built a simple L-Tuner for my 84 long wire and am having some strange behavior when trying to tune. I was hoping someone could lend their
    expertise to help me out.
It appears to work well for all bands except 20m, where Im having a very interesting problem. I can get the SWR down from 3.87 -> 2.7 with the
most "optimal" selection of inductances/capacitances. I have 0 -> 52 microhenries and 1 pF -> 1nF values of caps (and putting caps in series I
    can go even lighter).
Heres the behaviour, when I rest my hand on the inductor coil magnet wire, without touching the contacts, the SWR drops across the board for the
entire curve and 2.7 -> 1.2 for 20m. What is happening when I touch the inductor (that has insulated magnet wire)? Am I radically changing the inductance (or capacitance) of the circuit or some other phenomenon?
How do I replicate this effect with a circuit to get this nice SWR? The
only thing I cant do yet is add more inductance since I need to wind some additional coil or get a crazy core to insert in the tube I used.
edit: This is a receive-only system. No power is being pushed through it.
My goal is to over-optimize it for fun and learning! ;) submitted by /u/themadcanudist

Your supposed to tune a cb antenna in an open area with no cars or
buildings or anything, but what if you dont have an open area like that?
Can you tune it in an urban environment, and does it matter that much
because the SWR meter has the calibrate dial and then as long as the SWR reading is lower than like a 2 its properly tuned right? submitted by /u/covidd7fs87

ICOM Remote Utility issue - RS-BA1 version 2 on a MS Surface Pro X

I recently purchased a new Microsoft Surface Pro X with the Microsoft SQ2
(ARM) processor. I installed the ICOM Remote Utility and when trying to set
up the radio it fails to connect. Im trying to connect to my IC-7610 and IC-9700. Neither will connect. The setup works just fine on my Windows 10
Dell desktop. The computers and radios are on the same VLAN connected to
the same switch - traffic is not going through a hardware firewall. I can
ping the radios from the Surface, it just wont connect. I tried to disable
the Windows Defender firewall, that did not resolve the issue. Any thoughts
on the matter would be appreciated. I dont think its an issue with the
Surface, but if anyone is running one Id love to hear from you.

    Grounding equipment to power supply

My power supply is grounded through the outlet and has an exposed meta
chaise. I was curious if it would be a good cheat to link my tuner and
radio to the power supply so it can all be fed into ground through the outlet… or would this cause more problems by surrounding my radio and tuner with RF noise from the power supply to the equipment. submitted by

Creating a weak AM signal with my function generator and not receiving it
    right

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 08:35 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sq3iae/creating_a_weak_am_signal_with_my_function/

I just got a function generator for my electronics lab and i am currently exploring AM "radio" stuff with it since it has a mode to generate AM. (Interference isnt a problem. My radio picks up pretty much nothing when
the RX antenna is further than ~5cm away from the TX antenna)
    My two issues are:
My carrier is 10kHz and my signal is 1kHz. But i hear nothing when i tune
my SDR to 10kHz in normal AM mode. When i switch to LSB or USB, i can hear
the signal perfectly fine. Why am i not hearing anything when both the transmitter and receiver are set to AM?
My second issue is that no matter how much i change my signal frequency (carrier stays constant), the pitch of the tone doesnt change at all. Where could the issue for that be or what do i need to do differently so it
    changes pitch?
I know that this is only somewhat related to amateur radio stuff but i
figured that you guys might be able to help me. Thanks! submitted by /u/Little_Capsky
