First experience with a Linear satellite

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 11:04 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/staiug/first_experience_with_a_linear_satellite/

Well since it’s the same 10 people here on every FM sat pass I was advised
to try linear birds. Planned my day around it, doubled checked settings,
and when the time came I found a nice strong signal.
Another ham beat me to the punch answering a CQ which is fine but then this
guy reclined in his chair, opened a Pepsi, started stroking his cat, and
spent the rest of the pass telling a stranger about his local weather.
Is this normal? Even with sats hams can’t muster anything above an unsolicited weather report? I’m truly asking because while it’s fine that people handle their QSO’s as they see fit, I’m not pumping money so I can hear 40m ragchews, but on satellites. submitted by /u/KDRadio1

People who have used the chameleon emcomm 3, how did you like it?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 09:38 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/st8i0h/people_who_have_used_the_chameleon_emcomm_3_how/

I currently use a base loaded coil for 40 meters and below. I’m looking for
a portable antenna to use on 40, 60, and 80 on voice that is a more
efficient radiator and was wondering if the chameleon would be a good
    choice. Share your experience!

Ham, just got my ROC-M (Maritime Radio Canada). Marine Handheld Recommendations?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 03:10 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/stg96a/ham_just_got_my_rocm_maritime_radio_canada_marine/

I’d like to buy a nice marine HT. Cost is not an issue up to about $600 or so. I’ve been a ham for a while but don’t know much about marine radio HTs and what’s good. Is the Icom IC-M94D a good choice? Anything else out there that I should consider?
I’ll be mostly in lakes, not the open sea. Great Lakes, though. submitted by /u/gigbithomelab

Planning a sky wire loop antenna - but a major decision must be made.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 06:40 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/st4f7b/planning_a_sky_wire_loop_antenna_but_a_major/

    Hi team,
Ive got a general ticket, but as HF goes, Ive only got a receiver, no transmitting gear. Im planning to build a large (say, 80m half-wave,
130-ish feet) sky wire loop in my yard, as my first major foray into HF.
But I cant decide if I should build it with transmitting in mind, or use it strictly for reception and plan a totally separate (directional) antenna
for later, if and when I buy a transmitter or transceiver.
More concretely - I am in the US southeast, with ham friends in DC, Vermont
and California. Do I have any chance of reliable two-way contacts with
them, in the absence of a yagi or other directional antenna?
All thoughts welcome, 73 submitted by /u/Nink

    Baofeng Antenna Question

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 03:33 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/stgrdh/baofeng_antenna_question/

Hey all, I have a newbie question. I’m studying for my tests and I just got my UV-5R (I’m on a tight budget and I do plan to upgrade). I also got a magnetic Nagoya antenna to use on my car.
I live in a sparsely populated area without much activity so I couldn’t
help the temptation to run a few tests and the radio has behaved the
opposite of how I thought it would. My dad has an ancient Alinco UHF
handheld, and with the stock rubber ducky we were getting about 3 miles of range from the Baofeng through fairly thick woods, with the radio inside of
a car. This was pretty impressive given how negative most people talk about
    the stock equipment.
However, when I hook up the external antenna our range shrinks to less than half a mile.
I do understand how horrible the filtering on this radio is so I did expect more interference on the rx side, but I did not expect my tx to be affected
    in that way.
On the other hand, with the external antenna I have been able to receive
some nets while out and about with astonishing clarity and NOAA comes in crystal clear, in stark contrast to the rubber ducky.
It is possible that I’ve configured something wrong as I am a noob at this, but I did find it interesting as the reviews for this antenna are very
good. I did note some people saying they had issues with more rx
interference but I would expect even with poor filtering I should still
    have a decent transmit range.
This isn’t a make or break issue, but I am truly curious and my own
    research hasn’t turned up much.
P.S. I understand I’m not supposed to be transmitting, but as I said I do fully intend to take my exams in the next couple weeks and just want to
play with my new toy. I live in a rural area so I’m not too worried about stepping on someone’s repeater, as far as I I know I’m only in rage of one anyways. submitted by /u/RuinRevolutionary362

Does a Motorola 2 pin Male to Kenwood 2 pin Female adapter exist?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 12:28 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/stchni/does_a_motorola_2_pin_male_to_kenwood_2_pin/

My road racing team just acquired a pair of Motorola CP200d so we will be dumping our old Rugged Radio (BaoFeng) setup. Our old headsets and PTT currently uses Kenwood 2 Pin connectors. I cant seem to find a Kenwood 2
pin Female to Motorola 2 pin Male adapter. (But I have been able to find Kenwood Male > Motorola Female) Does one exist? Is there a work around? submitted by /u/ThrillHouse814

fell off. Feels super cheap. Has anyone else experienced this and how did
they fix it. It feels flimsy. TIA submitted by /u/KennyLogginsIII
