I’m contemplating building out a POTA rig but can’t seem to find any information on digital modes allowed.
Pota.app only shows ft8 and ft4 on the activation filters but I can find no other info about digital modes anywhere.
Are free mode text entry modes like JS8Call and PSK31 allowed? Is there any restriction at all? submitted by /u/Neat-Peach3196

    [OC] How to compare radios

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 05:00 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/svxfam/oc_how_to_compare_radios/

One of the topics Ive been talking about lately is the idea that we might
be able to measure the performance of your radio in some meaningful way
using equipment that can be either obtained by any amateur, or by
introducing a process that allows results to be compared, even if they have been generated differently.
Recently I came up with a tool that automatically generates a spectrogram
of an audio recording. That on its own isnt particularly interesting, but
its step one in the processing of an audio signal. In addition to the spectrogram, I also created a tool that generates a tone frequency sweep,
think of it as a tone that changes frequency over time, lets call it a
    sweep.
If you combine the two, you can generate a spectrogram of the sweep to give
you a starting point or baseline for comparison. You can build on that by
using your radio to transmit that sweep and record the result using a
receiver. In my initial experiments, I used an RTLSDR dongle to receive the audio with some success and a boatload of spectacular harmonics, but I
wanted to find a better, more accessible way to do this and during the week
I realised that my Yaesu FT-857d thats sitting in my shack, is connected to
a perfectly functional antenna and with a few settings it could do the job perfectly.
One of the biggest issues with my RTLSDR setup was squelch. That is the difference between what is a legitimate transmission and what is noise. Set
it too high and you hear nothing, set it too low and you hear everything, including background noise.
Since the VHF or 2m noise levels are quite high at my location, or QTH, I normally have the squelch completely closed. This is fine if youre normally using a strong repeater, but if youre attempting to receive a weak
hand-held, thats never going to work.
As any self-respecting amateur I was dragged down the path of last resort
to read my user manual where I discovered that in addition to CTCSS, a way
to transmit a tone to open a repeater, theres also a setting called Tone Squelch or on my radio TSQ, which will keep my radio squelch closed, unless
it hears the CTCSS tone from another radio.
Truth be told, I had to read a different user manual to discover how to actually set the CTCSS tone on my handheld to test, but thats just adding insult to injury. It has been a while since I read any manual, even though
I try to get to it once a year or so. I blame it on the lack of field-day camping. Thats my story and Im sticking to it.
So, combining all this, the spectrogram generator, the sweep, CTCSS, and
adding a Raspberry Pi with some website magic, if youre interested, an AWS
S3 bucket, I now have a service that listens on a local frequency, opens
the squelch if it hears the correct CTCSS tone, records the incoming signal until it stops, then generates a spectrogram from that audio and uploads it
    to a web site.
None of this is particularly complicated, though I did have some bugs to
work through. Ive published the code as a branch to my existing frequency-response project on github and Ive asked my local community to experiment with what I have on-air before I start doing more far reaching experiments.
    For example.
If I were to tune my radio to a local repeater output frequency, rather
than the simplex one Im currently on, Id be able to record and generate spectrograms for each transmission coming from that repeater. If that
repeater was connected to the internet, using AllStar, IRLP, Echolink, DMR
or Brandmeister, or even all of them, the global community could send their audio to my recorder and it could generate a spectrogram on the spot.
If using that repeater, you played a sweep into your microphone, or used
your digital audio interface to play the sound, you could then compare your signal path against others and against the baseline response.
One of the issues with doing this is that much of the audio that travels
across the internet is pretty munched, that is, its compressed, frequencies
are cut-off, theres all manner of interesting harmonics and the value of
the comparison appears limited at best.
Once I have my multi-band HF antenna, which Im told is still being built, I intend to set this contraption up on HF where we can do point-to-point recordings and we end up having a direct comparison between two stations
who transmit into my frequency-response software.
I should add some disclaimers here too. At the moment Im only using FM. The intent is to get this to a point where I can compare any mode, but when I
move to HF, Ill likely start with Single Side Band and go on from there.
One other annoyance is that any user needs to configure CTCSS to make this work, which is yet another hurdle to overcome, not insurmountable, but I
like to keep things simple when youre starting to learn.
Also, the harmonics still show, even on an analogue radio, so theres plenty more to discover.
In the meantime, what kinds of things can you think of to use this for?

Icom IC-7300 and iambic key.. Have I missed some details?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 02:53 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/svuu7b/icom_ic7300_and_iambic_key_have_i_missed_some/

I want to start learning CW and from what Im reading, maybe its a good idea
to learn using an iambic key as I may have some re-learning to do if I
start with a straight key and then switch. So I started looking into this
and as I understand it, an iambic key generally requires a "keyer". A
device between the key and the transceiver that sends the short and long signals to the radio.
Searching further, I learned that the IC-7300 has a built in keyer? maybe?
but everything Im finding seems to lack some detail. Im considering just constructing something crude to test (Off air of course) to make sure I
dont actually need that additional piece of external hardware. If I do, Ill just make my own using a micro controller. Plenty of folks have already
done this so it should be pretty easy to work from published examples.
Im just trying to find out before I build something if anybody can confirm.
Can I just connect an iambic key directly to the IC-7300? submitted by /u/Steve_but_different

Does anyone make an 8-port BNC junction/patch box

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 02:02 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/svtqbd/does_anyone_make_an_8port_bnc_junctionpatch_box/

Ive been searching but Im having trouble finding a part. Im looking for a wall-mountable BNC junction box with 8 ports. I would be using HF ->
~900mhz. The idea is that it would be a patch panel between multiple radios
and antennas so I can switch out which radio is going to which antenna port
by moving jumper cables in the box. There would be 4 antenna ports and 4
    radio ports.
Mounting location would be inside a watertight campershell in the back of a pickup truck. Im trying to copy a setup Ive seen in a radio truck made by
ENG Mobile Systems, but they dont advertise where they source their parts.
Im pretty sure they used something off the shelf, as the ENG setup does not appear to be custom made.
It would be something like this, but with the connectors closer together
    and 8 of them.

want to confirm the issue before I contact them, any ideas how I can do
this:? Speaker works as I can hear the menu beeps etc. Ive tried dialing in
UHF but nothing. I have no intension of transmitting just want to monitor stations initially and get used to the Radio, then Ill get my licence.
    Handheld is Baofeng UV-9R Pro
If anyone is from melbourne who can let me know a freq that i can tune into that would be great, north eastern suburbs.

Question about environment required for the remote technician exam

    Posted: 18 Feb 2022 03:26 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/svvjxi/question_about_environment_required_for_the/

I understand that I need to show the place Im taking my test in, but Im
still a little concerned by what they mean by "clean environment." I was originally planning to take the exam in my dorm room and I managed to clear
my whole desk, but my room is small so I do have some stuff behind me like
my backpack, plushies, showering utilities, laundry hamper, etc.
Would this be enough? Ive heard people were taking the exam in the
restrooms, but I really dont want to do that because the internet
connection is bad and the restrooms in my dorm are coed so someone could
walk in and start blasting music and being loud right outside my stall. submitted by /u/Narguin2

i know that ptt = push to talk, but i cant seem to find what rts or dtr actually are. any google link i click on talks about what they do, but not
what they mean, or which one i want. im really new to this radio and ham in general (only coming up on a year licensed), so like .. go easy on me haha.
the goal right now is im trying to get my ic-746-pro to talk to my computer
so i can transmit data, so psk and aprs. once thats done i want to get my mobile kenwood 440-sat working for js8, aprs and winlink. i have xggcomms usb-digimode-4 for both radios, im running win 10 (21h2 build 19044.1526)
    and fldigi 4.1.20
i only learned today that the icom radio has a digital mode, likes 9600
baud and thats kind of my limit of understanding right now. i have

Fortunately this pole only holds the other end of my EFHW so its not load bearing, Ive lowered it safely so it cannot fall and damage anything or
snap my antenna wire, which would be a disaster for my station, it would involve calling an aerial company to go up and retrieve the remains and put

Required distance between RX and TX antennas?

    Hi Guys!
This is probably a bit of a silly question, but ive only got the one mast,
and I have a VHF/UHF radio that puts out 50W, as well as an SDR with an up converter hooked up to an MLA-30 for hearing HF

Im vaguely aware that you can overload things if you TX too close, but I
dont know how close is too close, nor do I know at what power levels that becomes the case, Id rather not find out the hard way by frying my SDR equipment, does anyone know or have any general guidelines?
Can I even have them both on the same mast?
(If it matters, I think it does end up being less than 50W at the actual antenna, im not sure of the math offhand but I have 65 feet of LMR-400 coax between the transceiver and the antenna)

    WA2EBY Linear Amp from VU3SUA

    Posted: 17 Feb 2022 11:10 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/svbrf0/wa2eby_linear_amp_from_vu3sua/

QRP is always great & fun to operate, however, sometimes you feel the need
to pump a couple of watts to make that DX contact. That’s exactly where the need for a linear amplifier fit right in.
WA2EBY Linear Amp first showed up in 1999 QST Magazine. Since then numerous homebrewers have made their own version of this very popular linear amp
design pumping power ranging from 10W all the way up to 150 Watts and much more!
The magic of this project is the clever design using two commonly available MOSFETs (IRF 510) which can be sourced very easily.
If you need an easier way to make this fantastic circuit and give the
little homebrewed transceiver that extra nudge, you can buy the PCB or the complete build from VU3SUA – Sunil Lakhani
This kit is actually great for amateurs with a restricted grade license
(VU3) to stay within the legally authorised power output of 50 Watts. Specifications of WA2EBY from Sunil Lakhani – VU3SUA 40 Watt PEP at 24 VDC PCB size 143mmx 62mm Includes Low Pass Filter Kit prebuild Aluminum
Enclosure Double side PTH through hole SMA connectors on input and output Operates from 3.5MHZ to 28MHZ

    Aviation Radios

Hey yall, I am currently studying to become a Part 107 Drone pilot and
there has been mention of radio use for certain situations for
communication with ATC towers and for general traffic listening. So I got 2 questions as I think it fits here better than in the drone subs.
What aviation radios do yall recommend?
Are there any radios that can do aviation bands and allow me to do 2m/70cm bands as well?
Im definitely looking at handhelds, budget isnt really a thing because if I find the radio I like that checks all the boxes, its easier to convince my better half lol. And part of it would be legit business. I do work events
with my current handheld (2m/70cm) but its just a doggy ole Baofeng, so Im looking to upgrade that guy too. An all in one would be ideal but if its
one or the other, oh well.
