Active repeaters in NYC?
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 03:35 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sw84jl/active_repeaters_in_nyc/
Hi, Im very new to the hobby, Im not licensed yet, and I literally just got
my first ham radio (yaesu FT-60R). Im trying to learn how to use it. I
brought it to NYC and was looking at the RepeaterBook app. I key in the repeater info manually and Ive done so for a dozen so far and all I get is noise? Is it just too early in the morning (6:35 AM right now), or am I
doing something wrong? Thank you in advance. submitted by /u/bluemc516

WGY Radio station 100th anniversary special event this weekend
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 03:45 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sw89w9/wgy_radio_station_100th_anniversary_special_event/
The 100th anniversary of WGY (810 am) radio will be observed by two local Amateur Radio clubs on February 19th and 20th -- marking the centennial
using a Special Event amateur station that will reach other “hams” all over the world. The station will use the call sign W7Y, with the 7 representing “G” -- the 7th letter of the alphabet.
Honoring the broadcast pioneer’s centennial through the use of Amateur
Radio was the idea of the East Greenbush Amateur Radio Association (EGARA), which will operate the Special Event station on February 20th – the day WGY first signed on a century ago in 1922 Joining in the celebration will be members of the Schenectady Museum Amateur Radio Association (SMARA), who
will operate using the W7Y call sign from their station at the museum on Saturday, February 19th.
“WGY has a long history as a radio pioneer, leading both as a technical innovator, as well as a leader in developing broadcast radio as a source of entertainment and information,” said EGARA President Bryan Jackson. “Our Special Event station will use Amateur Radio to recognize WGY’s many achievements by celebrating its 100th anniversary across the nation and
around the world.”
Amateur Radio operators – also known as “hams” – who contact the Special
Event station will be able to request a reception report “QSL” card designed especially for the occasion.
Members of the public who would like to see the Special Event station in operation will also be able to visit the Schenectady Museum facility
between 10 am and 5 pm on Saturday.
Despite being over a century old itself, Amateur Radio continues to be a popular hobby around the world, with over 700,000 licensed hams in the
United States, and hundreds of thousands more overseas. Using “shortwave” frequencies, they are able to communicate over thousands of miles. In
addition, since Amateur stations operate independently, they do not require external infrastructure such as Internet and cell phones users need to communicate. This makes Amateur Radio an ideal resource for emergency communications when events such as hurricanes and earthquakes knock out traditional communication systems.
WGY’s legacy is also tied to shortwave broadcasting. From the 1920s until
the early 1960s, parent company General Electric operated two powerful shortwave stations from Schenectady – WGEO and WGEA. These stations used powerful transmitters to broadcast programming to the United States,
Europe, South America and Africa. Beginning with the start of World War
Two, they were turned over to the Voice of America to provide news and information to counter Nazi propaganda. submitted by /u/guesswhosreddit

Yeasu usability
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 05:23 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sw9zhm/yeasu_usability/
Hi,
I have had a couple of yeasu radios over the years. Ft857d and ft2dr.
What’s everyone’s experience with them? Mine personally, awful..
The radio hardware is fine. They feel well built and work great. But the usability of them i find horrendous. I’m constantly digging the manual out. The programming software is so painful to use and buggy to the point I gave
up trying to upload a list of UK repeaters today and decided to list the
thing on eBay.
Are all the radios like this, or is it just a yeasu thing? I don’t think I’m every going to buy one again, and try out icom instead. submitted

Directional Wifi Antenna Insanity?
Posted: 19 Feb 2022 10:39 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/swgr45/directional_wifi_antenna_insanity/
I posted the following in Electrical Engineering, was directed here:
Im doing Science Olympiad and part of what Im supposed to do is build a
2.4ghz wifi antenna that has as high of a gain as possible in one direction. The construction parameters are really strict, I have to fit the antenna
within a 15cm cube, not use any commercial antenna parts, and it has to be entirely passive, with the only power source being a SMA-Male connector
that will be attached to a router.
After googling I figured the best design would be Yagi-Uda, but given the strict size restrictions, it can only have something like 5 elements which didnt work very well.
Would a parabolic antenna be better? I know parabolic antennas can have
almost theoretically infinite gain, but Im not sure how exactly to
construct one that could fit within the 15cm cube. Also, what would I use
as the transmitter? a dipole?
Lastly, what the hell is impedance. I keep encountering this word
everywhere I look and theres a few formulas that describe it but what the
hell is it and why do I need to match it. And most importantly HOW do match impedance? like realistically how would I design the antenna and
then "match" its impedance?
Please if anyone has any clue about any of these things I would really appreciate it.
Hours spent googling has only made me vastly more confused submitted by /u/-AllShallKneel-
