The first issue of Radio ZS was published in July 1947 and the July 2022 i
ssue of Radio ZS will be a special 75th Anniversary issue. SARL Members an

THE FEBRUARY 2022 RADIO ZS

The February 2022 issue of Radio ZS will be available for download from Mo
nday 28 February. Leading up to the BACAR launch in October, the first i
n a series of articles appears looking at preparing for the balloon launch
. We look at Amateur Radio station earthing, extreme SOTA in South Ameri
ca, hands on with Morse code and the Reverse Beacon Network. We are visi
ting the lighthouse on Dassen Island and have modifications and improvemen
ts for the Heathkit SB 200 Amplifier. And there is more in this issue.

TWO CONTESTS NEXT WEEKEND

The SARL YL QSO Party, which runs from 12:00 to 13:00 UTC on Saturday 5
March, celebrates International Women's Day on 8 March and ever
ybody must work as many YL stations as possible. It is a CW and phone cont
est on 40 metres and the exchange is a RS or RST report and YL or OM. Subm

The SARL HAMNET 40 m Simulated Emergency Contest takes place between 12:00
and 14:00 UTC on Sunday 6 March 2022. This is a SSB contest on the 40 m b
and and is open to all Radio Amateurs in South Africa and neighbouring cou ntries. Test your operator skill and station design to see how well you ca
n do, and where you can improve. There are various categories, antenna
limitations and multipliers - but fortunately, everything you need to k
now about the contest is available on pages 68 and 69 of the 2022 SARL Blu
e Book. We look forward to having you join us! What about a Club bring and
Braai and then the contest?

CLUB NEWS

The Cape Town ARC will have its annual Bumper Flea Market/Boot Sale as alw
ays on the first Saturday of March. This is one of the largest annual amat
eur events in Cape Town. The gates will open at 12:00 on Saturday 5 March
at the Clubhouse and the club will light braai fires for those who wish t
o braai and ice-cold refreshments will be on sale. Everybody is welcome.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are currently a few sunspots with simple magnetic
configurations visible. There is a slight chance of C-class flaring. If y
ou want to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sun
spot number for the week will be around 45. The 12 to 30 m bands may provi

Die Februarie 2022-uitgawe van Radio ZS sal vanaf Maandag 28 Februarie bes kikbaar wees vir aflaai. Voor die BACAR-lansering in Oktober verskyn die e erste in 'n reeks artikels wat kyk na voorbereiding vir die ballon lanseri

Die SARL HAMNET 40 m Gesimuleerde Nood kompetisie vind plaas tussen 12:00
tot 14:00 UTC op Sondag 6 Maart 2022. Dit is 'n ESB-kompetisie op die 40
m-band en is oop vir alle radio amateurs in Suid-Afrika en buurlande. Toe
ts jou operateur vaardigheid en stasie ontwerp om te sien hoe goed jy kan
doen en waar jy kan verbeter. Daar is verskeie kategorieë, antenna
beperkings en vermenigvuldigers - maar gelukkig is alles wat jy o
or die kompetisie moet weet op bladsye 68 en 69 van die 2022 SARL Blou Boe

Die Kaapstadse ARS sal soos altyd op die eerste Saterdag van Maart sy jaar likse Groot-snuffelmark/kattebak verkoping hou. Dit is een van die grootst
e jaarlikse amateur geleenthede in Kaapstad. Die hekke open Saterdag 5 Maa
rt om 12:00 by die Klubhuis en die klub gaan braaivleisvure aansteek vir d iegene wat wil braai en yskoue verversings sal te koop wees. Almal is welk
om.

HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak laag
gaan wees. Tans is daar 'n paar sonvlekke met eenvoudige magnetiese sames tellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n geringe moontlikheid van C-klas sonfakkels. D iegene wat hulle eie frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte e ffektiewe sonvlektelling van 45 vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan g
